Letter from the Pope Pio IX to the Bishop of Arequipa, Jose Sebastian de Goyeneche y Barreda, confirming the extension of the Jubilee of the previous year, 1853, made by that Bishop, in favor of the people that during the 30 days allotted to win the jubilee, could not participate of its benefit. Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) reigned as Pope from 16 June 1846 to his death in 1878. During his pontificate, Pius IX convened the First Vatican Council (1869-70), which decreed papal infallibility, but the council was cut short due to the loss of the Papal States.
