Opening with a critical view of ecumenism, Ruether traces a dualism in Christian history: the Christianity of empire emphasized private relationships with God that sacramentalized the status quo, whereas the fringe movements of liberation theologies sought to live a Gospel life more like Jesus and the prophets, and this latter view she heralds as both the ture Kingdom of God and vital for the Church’s survival in a globalized, nuclear age; she presses the congregation to consider living the Gospel not as a purely private relationship with God, but a radical reconciliation with neighbor – and neighbor, in this globalized age, means particularly challenging sexism, racism, and the corporate world working conditions that dehumanize employees.
