- | Reading from the Third Chapter, | 14:56 |
of the First Epistle of James: John. | 14:58
See what love the Father has given us | 15:07
that we should be called Children of God, and so we are. | 15:09
The reason why the world does not know us | 15:16
is that it did not know Him. | 15:18
Beloved, we are God's children now. | 15:22
It does not yet appear what we shall be, | 15:26
but we know that when He appears, | 15:29
we shall be like Him. | 15:32
For we shall see Him as He is. | 15:34
And everyone who thus hopes in Him, | 15:38
purifies himself, | 15:41
as He is pure. | 15:43 | |

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain. | 21:50
And when he sat down, his disciples came to him. | 21:53
And he opened his mouth and taught them to say: | 21:57
Blessed are the poor in spirit, | 22:01
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. | 22:04
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. | 22:08
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth. | 22:13
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, | 22:18
for they shall be satisfied. | 22:22
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. | 22:25
Blessed are the pure in heart, | 22:31
for they shall see God. | 22:34
Blessed are the peacemakers, | 22:38
for they shall be called Children of God. | 22:40
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, | 22:44
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. | 22:48
Blessed are you when men revile you, and persecute you, | 22:52
and utter all kinds of evil against you, | 22:57

Doctor Wilkinson, Reverend Harper, | 27:25
my illustrious colleague in the episcopacy, Bishop | 27:29
William Cannon, the resident Bishop of the Raleigh area. | 27:33
I am profoundly appreciative this evening | 27:38
for the privilege | 27:41
to be a part of this | 27:43
experience of renewal | 27:47
on the part of this citadel of theological education. | 27:50
For the revitalization of the ministry | 27:57
of these two annual conferences. | 28:02
I suppose that there is no condition | 28:07
that can become more tragic and devastating | 28:10
in the lives of those who preach the Word, | 28:15
than that which occurs in a state | 28:19
of intellectual and spiritual depletion. | 28:22
And the fact is, that all of us, both old and young | 28:27
are likely to encounter such experiences. | 28:33
Along the course of our lives, the well does become deep | 28:38
on certain occasions, and we find ourselves | 28:41
with nothing to draw with. | 28:45
And that tends to become obvious on Sunday morning | 28:48
in many of our pulpits. | 28:53
Continuing educational events like this one here, | 28:56
during this convocation, | 29:01
are designed to provide new, energizing strength. | 29:05
As a prohibitive for our deficiencies | 29:12
and the loss of equipment, or the work of the ministry. | 29:14
And so it is in that vein of thought this evening | 29:20
that I want us to think with some brevity. | 29:22
And so I'm in the Third Chapter of John's Gospel, | 29:26
in the eighth verse. | 29:28
The words are these: | 29:31
The wind bloweth where it list is. | 29:33
And thou heareth the sound there on. | 29:36
But canst not tell whence it cometh and wither it goeth. | 29:39
So is everyone that is born of the Spirit. | 29:44
I wanna suggest a theme | 29:50
out of this striking and dramatic Gospel context. | 29:52
Some such as this. | 29:57
The mystery of the Holy Spirit. | 30:00
The beginning of the manifestation | 30:05
of the supernatural power in history, | 30:07
appeared in the first act of divine creation. | 30:13
The Genesis account of that providential event | 30:17
out of which the universe was formed. | 30:21
Says the Spirit moved upon the face of the waters. | 30:25
And God said, "Let there be light!" | 30:29
And there was light. | 30:32
Doctor George A. Butrick stated this great truth | 30:35
rather insight fully on this wise. | 30:38
He said, the Spirit brooded over the chaos | 30:42
to bring forth the cosmos. | 30:45
From that moment of God's thrust out of transcendence | 30:49
through the works of Creation, | 30:53
His presence has never ceased to exist | 30:56
in all that was made by Him. | 30:58
The New Testament affirms that active presence of God, | 31:03
as a final and most complete Revelation | 31:08
of his character and Will in Jesus Christ. | 31:10
And it's continued in the Holy Spirit. | 31:15
Almost a quarter of a century ago when a revival | 31:18
in theological discussion was in ferment, | 31:21
Stanley Harper of Drew University viewed | 31:25
the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit as a most central | 31:28
and yet most neglected doctrine of the Christian faith. | 31:31
And he defended his contention by an assertion, | 31:37
that one of the early fathers of the Church, who said, | 31:40
"Know thou, that every man is either empty or full. | 31:44
"For if he has not the Holy Spirit, | 31:49
"he has no knowledge of the Creator. | 31:51
"He has not received Jesus Christ, the life. | 31:54
"He knows not the Father who's in Heaven." | 31:58
Thus Harper concludes that the Holy Spirit | 32:03
is something to be experienced. | 32:06
And is not therefore subject to, | 32:09
totally to the criteria of formal thinking. | 32:11
It is upon the basis of this conviction | 32:17
that the consequences of neglecting the doctrine | 32:22
of the Spirit and the life of the Christian community | 32:25
of faith are devastating, | 32:27
that I'm persuaded that we as pastors, | 32:31
prophets, and teachers, | 32:34
should seek a deeper and clearer knowledge | 32:36
and understanding of the work of the Spirit, | 32:39
as preparation and power | 32:42
for more effective ministries and witness to the world. | 32:45
We at the main line Protestant Churches | 32:51
are not fully cured of the shocking mallady | 32:53
that surfaced in the '60s among a significant segment | 32:55
of the clergy who experienced a crisis | 33:00
in their faith and personal certainty | 33:03
of their call to the ministry. | 33:07
Many who agonized in their search | 33:10
for direction and assurance fail to achieve fulfillment | 33:13
in their role to such extents | 33:18
that they considered, and some did leave the ministry. | 33:21
While these individuals expressed a desire | 33:27
of reasons for their frustrations and disillusionment, | 33:31
it seems that in most instances there were evidences | 33:36
of a deeply seeded theological problem, | 33:40
which stemmed from an improper understanding | 33:44
of the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. | 33:46
They, like many of us, wanted to direct | 33:51
and circumscribe the course and latitude | 33:53
of the Spirit's leadership. | 33:57
While the most comprehensive and profound | 33:59
theological discussions of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit | 34:01
that I've seen expressed in contemporary style and thought. | 34:04
It's set forth by James H. Stewart, a Scottish minister, | 34:10
in his book entitled, The Wind of the Spirit. | 34:13
In his treatment of the experience of Nicodemus, | 34:19
with Jesus out of which arose the concept of the new birth. | 34:23
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, | 34:27
Stewart unfolds several mysteries of the Spirit, | 34:29
which Jesus sought to explain not only to Nicodemus, | 34:33
but to the whole of his fellowship, | 34:38
including the continuing Body of Christ | 34:41
after his ascension to the Father's Kingdom. | 34:45
Among those insights is the unpredictable province | 34:49
and destiny of the Spirit that is implied | 34:53
by the words thou canst not tell when it cometh, | 34:57
and wither it goeth. | 35:01
He goes on to affirm that because of this character | 35:04
of the third person in the Trinity, | 35:07
no one can tell exactly where he may be carried | 35:10
by the Spirit, when allowed to have His way. | 35:13
Nicodemus, he says, did no know that night | 35:17
that the Wind of the Spirit was going to carry him | 35:21
one day to Pontius Pilate's council chamber | 35:23
to claim the body of Jesus. | 35:27
One of the boldest actions in the Gospel story, | 35:30
and beyond that, to the world-shattering event | 35:33
of the Resurrection. | 35:35
That little shatter of that little group of men | 35:38
in the upper room at Pentecost | 35:40
did not know the Wind of the Spirit | 35:43
that was shaking them was going to carry them | 35:46
and their descendants, | 35:49
to the presence of Caesar and the conquest of the world. | 35:51
And this can be extended and elaborated upon | 35:56
almost to a point of infinity. | 35:59
This role of spiritual captives may be expanded | 36:02
to include outstanding persons | 36:06
in Christian history. | 36:09
Martin Luther was carried by the Wind of the Spirit | 36:13
from a monastery to the Protestant Reformation. | 36:15
John Wesley from Aldous Gate, to the beginning | 36:20
of a movement of spiritual holiness, | 36:23
and Evangelical witness that destined to circle the globe, | 36:26
and turn the world upside down. | 36:30
The United Methodist Church | 36:34
is approaching a significant crossroads. | 36:36
Where two centuries of history will bisect the future, | 36:40
and only the Spirit knows the direction of that future. | 36:43
For those who are committed to the ministry | 36:48
to which we are called. | 36:50
My friends, tonight we are not able to tell | 36:53
where the members of the community of faith | 36:55
may be guided by the Spirit in service. | 36:59
There are many vivid examples of men and women | 37:04
who started out in life | 37:06
with definite goals for a career in business, | 37:09
law, politics, amusements, | 37:11
and other pursuits, but somewhere along the way | 37:15
they allowed the Spirit to take control of their lives, | 37:18
and He has led them along strange pathways. | 37:22
They find their fulfillment not in dollars and cents, | 37:27
but in service rendered in the name of Christ. | 37:32
Some of the clearest and most concrete examples | 37:36
of this unselfish attitude that I have observed | 37:39
are in the mission fields of the world. | 37:43
Those that are sponsored by the Church. | 37:46
And they're exemplified by individuals | 37:50
who are caught and committed by the romance of service. | 37:52
And they have forsaken lives of comfort and affluence | 37:57
in order to be identified with the poor | 38:02
and the less fortunate. | 38:05
As I retrospect the annals of my life | 38:08
and my association with comrades in the Church, | 38:10
especially of the ministry, | 38:14
I have one of my old preachers that stands out preeminently | 38:17
in my thinking, he was a man of very ordinary ability | 38:20
and training, but he was outstanding | 38:24
in his love for people and the church. | 38:27
He once told me the dramatic story of one day | 38:30
when he went to visit with his Bishop, | 38:33
concerning an appointment. | 38:36
He had been moved from a little church | 38:39
down in South Georgia. | 38:41
He had heard the news that the church building | 38:44
had been destroyed by fire, | 38:46
and the people were discouraged and scattered. | 38:48
The congregation had become spiritually anemic | 38:52
and discouraged. | 38:56
He was then serving a church with a membership | 38:58
of probably three times the size of that little church. | 39:00
He went in and spoke to the Bishop and said, | 39:05
"Bishop, I wanna go back to that church and revitalize it." | 39:06
And the Bishop looked at the worksheet | 39:11
and said, "My brother, do you realize that the salary there | 39:12
"is much less than the one you're serving now?" | 39:15
He said, "Yes, Bishop, I know that." | 39:19
"Did you know the membership is not half as large?" | 39:21
He said, "Yes, Bishop, I know that. | 39:23
"But I wanna go." | 39:26 | |
And then, the Bishop, in an attempt to be somewhat sarcastic | 39:28
as sometimes we can be, | 39:32
he said, "My brother, are you drinking?" | 39:35
And this was his reply: | 39:38
He said, "Yes, Bishop, I am drinking. | 39:40
"But I am drinking from a fountain that never runs dry." | 39:43
My friends, tonight I wanna tell you | 39:47
that the fountain is still springing up! | 39:49
Under everlasting life, | 39:52
which you and I are sometimes are like the woman of Sumeria. | 39:54
We find ourselves | 39:59
not able to differentiate between the fountain and the well. | 40:01
And there are times where we cannot get water from the well | 40:07
but the fountain keeps flowing, | 40:09
if we'll let the Spirit be our guide. | 40:12
Then we are not able always to determine | 40:17
where the Spirit will carry us in suffering. | 40:19
One of the most crucial weaknesses of the Church today | 40:23
in my judgment is its diminishing awareness | 40:28
of in the emphasis upon cross bearing, | 40:30
as a mark of Christian discipleship. | 40:34
We, as ministers, let us never forget | 40:37
that we are called to a role of suffering service. | 40:39
We are called to follow our lord | 40:45
all the way to Calvary. | 40:48
In times when we are called | 40:51
to cut across the ways of the world | 40:52
and when the horizontal meets the vertical, | 40:54
crosses are formed. | 40:57
And somebody has to be crucified on those crosses. | 40:59
But thank God tonight there is the assurance | 41:04
that following every Good Friday, | 41:06
there's always a morning of Resurrection on Sunday. | 41:09
Jesus lived a life of suffering | 41:14
that was extended across the whole span of his days | 41:17
in the flesh from Bethlehem to Calvary. | 41:19
My own ministry has become somewhat deficient | 41:24
in the joy and fulfillment which came to me | 41:29
during the days of less affluence | 41:31
when most strenuous sacrifices were demanded. | 41:33
The Hebrew prophets made their most meaningful contributions | 41:38
when they were forced to suffer | 41:43
because of the sins of Israel. | 41:44
The Spirit has been known to lead the people of God | 41:47
into the deepest and darkest valleys and recesses | 41:50
of hardships and trials, and disappointments, | 41:54
ingratitude, and rejection. | 41:58
But in all such conditions, | 42:01
God has revealed His support and His assurance, | 42:04
through voices like Paul who said, | 42:08
"I am persuaded that the sufferings of this present life | 42:11
"are not worthy to be compared with the glory | 42:16
"that shall be revealed in us." | 42:19
My brothers and sisters, whenever life becomes so easy, | 42:22
when the ministry becomes a bed of roses, | 42:28
and there isn't much controversy around, | 42:31
and when people accept you fully, | 42:35
remember you are not likely to be traversing the path, | 42:38
that which the Spirit wants you to go. | 42:42
Then it is not always clear where the Spirit | 42:45
will lead us in achievement. | 42:48
Of all the problems which ministers face in life, | 42:51
none are more perplexing and frustrating, | 42:54
then those which occur in their efforts to define success. | 42:58
This peculiar characteristic of the ministry | 43:03
can only be explained by the assumption | 43:05
that success in God's economy | 43:09
cannot be correctly determined | 43:12
by the human standards of the world. | 43:14
Success is not within the power of human creatures. | 43:17
Some may plant, others may water, | 43:22
but the increase must come from God. | 43:25
The Spirit may guide men along strange pathways, | 43:29
in order to fulfill God's Will in us and for us. | 43:33
The supreme evidence of that achievement | 43:37
in spiritual maturity, those evidences are made manifest | 43:40
in believers as they become faithful, | 43:44
compassionate, loving disciples of Jesus Christ. | 43:47
Stated in another manner, | 43:53
the highest achievement to which the Spirit may lead persons | 43:55
is that state of Christian unity | 44:00
for which Jesus prayed when he said, | 44:03
that they may be one in us, | 44:05
as you and I are one. | 44:09
When the circumstances of Pentecost are viewed, | 44:11
it becomes quite obvious that the disciples of Jesus | 44:14
did not receive the gift of the Spirit | 44:19
until they came to know and accept each other, | 44:22
and each others' thinking. | 44:27
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, | 44:29
they were all with one accord (chuckles), | 44:34
and in one place. | 44:37 | |
It is at this level of unity that God in other persons, | 44:39
that the Spirit takes charge of our lives | 44:45
and makes us to become what God has designed | 44:49
in His divine purpose. | 44:51

and it does not appear what we shall be. | 45:12
But we know that we shall be like He. | 45:15

these broken lives of ours, | 45:22
for whom Jesus died, | 45:26
