- | On behalf of the Duke University Chapel staff, | 19:03 |
it pleases me to welcome each of you | 19:08
to the chapel this morning. | 19:10
I am aware that this is alumni weekend. | 19:13
And as a member of the Classes of '72, '75, and '82, | 19:18
I share your joy and pleasure at being on campus today. | 19:24
I am also aware that it is a bit warm in here. | 19:33
I asked Dick Maxwell if somehow all the other, | 19:37
the alumni association had planned not to have | 19:41
the air conditioning in place in time | 19:44
in order that a subtle message might be relayed | 19:46
to visiting alumni. | 19:51
He assured that that's not the case. | 19:53
But please feel free to remove your jackets | 19:55
if you wish to do so. | 19:58
And I would also like to call your attention | 20:01
to the envelope in your bulletin. | 20:04
This fall, the Duke Chapel Choir | 20:08
will be participating in a service, | 20:12
and you will find this announcement on the back | 20:15
of your bulletin, in the Washington National Cathedral. | 20:17
And those who wish to help with that trip | 20:22
may feel free to do so. | 20:25
Let us now confess our sins in unison. | 20:30
Merciful God, we confess to You that we have sinned. | 20:36
We confess the sins that no one knows, | 20:41
and the sins that everyone knows. | 20:45
The sins that burden us, and the sins that do not bother us | 20:48
because we are ease with them. | 20:53
We confess our sins as a congregation. | 20:56
We have not loved one another as Christ loves us. | 21:00
We have not comforted one another as Christ comforts us. | 21:04
We have not forgiven one another as we have been forgiven. | 21:09
We have not given ourselves in service for the world | 21:15
as Christ gives himself for us. | 21:18
O gracious God, forgive us. | 21:22
Send to us Your Holy Spirit, | 21:25
that we be strengthened to live as by Your mercy; | 21:28
You call us to live through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 21:33
Amen. | 21:38 | |
Let us give thanks for God is good | 21:53
and God's love is everlasting. | 21:56
Thanks be to God whose love creates us. | 22:00
Thanks be to God whose mercy redeems us. | 22:04
Thanks be to God whose grace leads us into the future. | 22:09
- | Fulfill now, O Lord, we pray You. | 22:35 |
Your gracious promise that Your word | 22:39
shall not return to You empty, | 22:41
but shall accomplish that which You propose and prosper; | 22:44
toward the end for which You have sent it, | 22:48
for Your namesake. | 22:52
Amen. | 22:54 | |
The Old Testament lesson is from Joel, | 22:58
chapter two verses 28 through 32. | 23:00
"And it shall come to pass afterward | 23:07
"that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh. | 23:11
"Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. | 23:15
"Your old men shall dream dreams. | 23:20
"And your young men shall see visions, | 23:24
"even upon the men servants and maid servants. | 23:28
"In those days, I will pour out my spirit. | 23:33
"And I will give portance in the heavens | 23:40
"and on the earth; | 23:42
"blood and fire and columns of smoke. | 23:44
"The sun shall be turned to darkness, | 23:50
"and the moon to blood. | 23:54
"Before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes, | 23:56
"and it shall come to pass that all men who call upon | 24:01
"the name of the Lord shall be delivered. | 24:04
"For in Mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, | 24:09
"there shall be those who escape. | 24:13
"As Lord has said, and among the survivors | 24:16
"shall be those whom the Lord calls." | 24:19
Here ends the reading from the Old Testament lesson. | 24:26

"He will judge the world with righteousness." | 26:31
(congregation speaking) | 26:34
The New Testament lesson is from Acts chapter two, | 26:45
versus one through 21. | 26:48
"When the day of Pentecost had come, | 26:53
"they were altogether in one place. | 26:55
"And suddenly a sound came from heaven | 26:59
"like the rush of a mighty wind. | 27:01
"And it filled all the house where they were sitting. | 27:03
"And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, | 27:08
"disturbed and resting on each one of them. | 27:11
"And they were all filled with The Holy Spirit | 27:16
"and began to speak in other tongues, | 27:19
"as a spirit gave them utterance. | 27:23
"Now, they were dwelling in Jerusalem, Jews, | 27:27
"devout men from every nation under heaven. | 27:31
"And at this sound, the multitude came together. | 27:35
"And they were bewildered because each one heard | 27:40
"them speaking in his own language. | 27:42
"And they were amazed and wondered saying, | 27:45
"'Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?' | 27:49
"'And how is it that we hear each of us | 27:55
"'in his own native language? | 27:57
"'Parthians and Meads and Elamites | 28:01
"'and residents of Mesopotamia. | 28:06
"'Judea and Cappadocia, | 28:10
"'Pontus and Asia, | 28:14
"'Phrygia and Pamphylia, | 28:17
"'Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, | 28:21
"'and visitors from Rome, | 28:27
"'both Jews and Crosalites, | 28:29
"'Cretians and Arabians; | 28:32
"'we hear them telling in our own tongues | 28:36
"'the mighty works of God.' | 28:39
"And all were amazed and perplexed saying to one another, | 28:41
"'What does this mean?' | 28:46
"But others mocking said, | 28:48
"'They are filled with new wine.' | 28:52
"But Peter, standing with the 11, | 28:56
"lifted up his voice and addressed them. | 29:00
"'Men of Judea, and all who dwell in Jerusalem, | 29:05
"'let this be known to you | 29:10
"'and give ear to my words, | 29:12
"'for these men are not drunk as you suppose, | 29:15
"'since it is only the third hour of the day. | 29:19
"'But this is what was spoken | 29:24
"'by the prophet Joel: | 29:26
"'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, | 29:33
"'that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, | 29:38
"'and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, | 29:42
"'and your young men shall see visions, | 29:46
"'and your old men shall dream dreams. | 29:49
"'Ye, and on my man servants and maid servants | 29:52
"'in those days I will pour out my Spirit, | 29:55
"'and they will prophesy. | 30:00
"'And I will show wonders in the heavens above | 30:02
"'and signs on the earth beneath; | 30:05
"'blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. | 30:08
"'The sun shall be turned to darkness | 30:13
"'and the moon to blood, | 30:15
"'before the day of the Lord comes, | 30:19
"'the great and manifest day. | 30:20
"'And it shall be that whoever calls on | 30:24
"'the name of the Lord shall be saved.'" | 30:26
Here ends the reading of the New Testament. | 30:32
(triumphant orchestral music) | 30:47
(choir singing) | 31:31 | |
Will the congregation please stand | 36:27
for the reading of the gospel lesson? | 36:30
The gospel lesson is from John chapter 20 | 36:40
verses 19 through 23. | 36:43
"On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, | 36:50
"the doors being shut where the disciples were | 36:54
"for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them | 36:58
"and said to them, 'Peace be with you.' | 37:01
"When he had said this, he showed them his hands | 37:07
"and his side. | 37:11 | |
"Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. | 37:14
"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. | 37:17
"'As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.' | 37:24
"And when he had said this, he breathed on them | 37:29
"and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. | 37:34
"'If you forgive the sins of any, | 37:41
"'they are forgiven. | 37:46
"'If you retain the sins of any, | 37:49
"'they are retained.'" | 37:53
Here ends the reading from the gospel lesson. | 37:56
Amen. | 38:01 | |
(worship organ music) | 38:03
(choir singing) | 38:11 | |
"Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, | 39:17
"With all Thy quickening powers. | 39:20
"Kindle a flame of sacred love | 39:24
"in these cold hearts of ours." | 39:27
Amen. | 39:32 | |
I welcome you to Duke Chapel on this great day of Pentecost. | 39:34
This is the fulfillment and culmination | 39:40
of the 50 days of Easter. | 39:43
In Judaism, Pentecost is the feast of weeks. | 39:47
Historically, 50 days after Passover | 39:54
to signify the tradition that the Israelites | 39:58
arrived at Sinai 50 days | 40:02
after their escape from pharaoh in Egypt. | 40:06
And ever since that time, Judaism has celebrated | 40:12
the gift of God's presence unto the Jews | 40:16
and the gift of God's law unto Moses and his people | 40:19
at Mount Sinai. | 40:23 | |
And so it was that the disciples of Jesus | 40:25
were gathered together on the day of Pentecost | 40:28
in the holy city of Jerusalem, | 40:31
50 days after his resurrection. | 40:34
And on that great Pentecost day, | 40:38
as our gospel text, which you heard read this morning, | 40:41
accounts, The Holy Spirit was given unto them. | 40:46
And ever since the day of Pentecost has been known | 40:51
to Christians as the birthday of the church. | 40:54
It is the inauguration of the New Age | 40:58
promised in the Old Testament, | 41:02
now made sure in the wonders of Easter. | 41:04
The gift of The Holy Spirit propelled those gathered | 41:09
in Jerusalem that day outward | 41:14
to spread the good news of Jesus Christ | 41:18
as lord and savior. | 41:22
St. Luke wrote both the Gospel of Luke | 41:25
and the Book of Acts, which in the second chapter, | 41:28
records the story of Pentecost. | 41:32
And Luke was fond of the image | 41:36
of burning hearts and fire | 41:39
for the gospel message. | 41:43
Indeed, on the day of Easter itself, | 41:45
Luke tells us that some of the disciples were | 41:50
walking toward Emmaus on the Emmaus road, | 41:53
and Jesus appeared to them but they didn't recognize him. | 41:56
But after he talked with them and explained | 42:00
the Scriptures to them, suddenly their eyes | 42:04
were open and their hearts burned within them. | 42:07
And after he disappeared from them, | 42:11
they said to one another, "Did not our hearts burn within | 42:14
"as he opened the Scriptures to us?" | 42:18
And so there is, on this Pentecost day, | 42:22
a tremendous since of excitement; | 42:25
a burning fire of the presence of God. | 42:28
And there are three clear themes that Luke | 42:32
tries to explore in his Book of Acts concerning Pentecost. | 42:35
The first is that he is clearly convinced | 42:41
that Pentecost indicates that this new faith in Christ | 42:45
is to be a universal worldwide faith. | 42:50
Pentecost is the inauguration of a world consciousness; | 42:56
a mission to all people, | 43:01
Christianity was not to be limited to Israel. | 43:03
And secondly, there is in the text that | 43:08
Dick Maxwell read this morning, | 43:10
the interesting note that tongues were distributed. | 43:13
And those who were present spoke in a variety of languages, | 43:18
but all heard and understood; this was not gibberish. | 43:24
This was languages which were meaningful. | 43:30
And the message got across. | 43:34
And so there has been from Pentecost on | 43:37
a concern in the church that Christianity | 43:39
is a religion which is not confused, | 43:43
but clear and rational and compelling. | 43:47
There is a message and a meaning to be communicated. | 43:50
And thirdly, the theme of reversing of expectations. | 43:55
The disciples, after all, were devastated | 44:00
before the Easter experience, | 44:03
and confused during the 50 days | 44:06
before the gift of the Spirit. | 44:08
But now wit the the gift of the Spirit, | 44:11
their expectations were reversed and they knew | 44:13
that now they were to go forth with | 44:16
the proclamation of the good news of Christ. | 44:17
A sudden turn around, if you will, | 44:23
of what they expected to what they were now | 44:26
called to do. | 44:30 | |
What appeared at first to be defeat and confusion | 44:31
turns out to be victory and new life, | 44:35
and new life for the community of Christ. | 44:40
Let's look at these three themes | 44:43
present in the Scriptures about Pentecost. | 44:46
First of all, this world character. | 44:50
You see from the beginning, because of the Pentecost | 44:54
experience and Christians' understanding of it, | 44:56
Christianity was not a religion to be limited | 45:00
to any one people. | 45:03
It was not to be limited to any one race, | 45:05
but rather proclaimed in every tongue, | 45:08
in every place. | 45:12 | |
And the Christian gospel is a universal message | 45:14
which breaks down all barriers. | 45:18
As St. Paul would say later in Galatians 3:28, | 45:21
"There is neither Jew nor Greek; | 45:25
"there is neither slave nor free; | 45:28
"there is neither male nor female, | 45:32
"for you are all one in Christ Jesus." | 45:35
Beginning a little more than a week ago, | 45:42
we at Duke have been celebrating | 45:44
the British-American festival, | 45:45
and to this campus have come tens of thousands of people | 45:48
from all over North Carolina and indeed the world | 45:51
to celebrate with us the coming 400 years ago | 45:55
in 1584 of the first Englishmen | 45:58
to the shores of North Carolina in those famous | 46:03
Roanoke Island landings, directed by Sir Walter Raleigh | 46:06
and sponsored by the first Queen Elizabeth. | 46:11
And those of us who've been participating in | 46:16
the British-American festival have been reminded again | 46:18
that we now live in a world which is but a global village. | 46:21
Those first settlers, when they set sail | 46:27
from Plymouth, England took months to get here. | 46:30
And to set forth into a new world of | 46:34
untried expectations and uncertainties. | 46:36
Now we can go anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. | 46:41
And everything in every place | 46:45
depends on every other place. | 46:49
We have direct communications | 46:53
and instantaneous implications. | 46:55
We live in a world which is indeed a global village. | 46:59
And Christianity has understood that from its beginning. | 47:04
This is a faith that proclaims | 47:08
that consciousness of particularity is unacceptable. | 47:11
Christian people are first and foremost | 47:17
at home in Christ. | 47:21
Christians are a pilgrim people | 47:24
whose true home is not of any nation, | 47:27
indeed, not even of this world. | 47:31
And so we who celebrate this British-American festival | 47:35
would do well to think about it in terms of | 47:39
a world consciousness. | 47:42
And we have the Smokey Mountain British Brass Band | 47:44
with us today that helps us raise our sights | 47:48
and see the world in which we live as one community. | 47:52
That's the vision of the Christian faith. | 47:57 |
- | Actually the founder of Methodism, | 0:03 |
always said, the world is my parish | 0:05
and how true that 18th century divine | 0:09
would come to be. | 0:13 | |
Today the world is one parish | 0:15
and the Christian faith propels us to see that | 0:18
and not to think in small ways. | 0:21
Nation and nation mean nothing anymore | 0:27
and then secondly, there is this concern | 0:32
in the Pentecost story for understanding | 0:35
and communication. | 0:38
You see, the scripture writer purposely dealt | 0:40
with this matter of tones | 0:44
as a contra-distinction with the story | 0:46
in the Old Testament of the Tower of Babel, | 0:51
when men and women were separated | 0:55
into nations and when languages | 0:58
symbolically came into being, | 1:01
which could not be understood by one another. | 1:03
The New Testament passage about Pentecost | 1:07
says that everyone understood the message | 1:10
and so, there is a movement toward understanding | 1:15
and meaning and that concern | 1:19
for clarity and meaning and purpose | 1:22
has informed Christianity, therefore, since its foundation | 1:25
and that's the reason that the Christian faith | 1:30
has been so concerned with the development | 1:33
of learning and educational institutions. | 1:36
We who are alumni of this great institution | 1:40
are reminded today that the founders of this school | 1:43
intended it that way. | 1:47
That was indeed the purpose for the founding of this school. | 1:50
At an alumni occasion, Friday night, | 1:55
one alumnus said to me that she had been | 1:58
in the chapel Friday afternoon for the organ demonstration | 1:59
and she said every time I go in there, | 2:03
the presence of God strikes me | 2:06
most vividly. | 2:10 | |
And I said, that's what Mr. Duke wanted. | 2:11
William Blackburn, in his great book | 2:15
on the architecture of Duke University | 2:17
tells us very clearly that from the beginning, | 2:19
Mr. Duke said, I want the central building, | 2:22
the central building to be a great towering church, | 2:25
which will dominate all the surrounding buildings | 2:30
because such an edifice would be bound | 2:33
to have a profound influence on the spiritual life | 2:37
of the young men and women who come here. | 2:41
It has and it does. | 2:45 | |
Every time I come onto this campus, | 2:47
especially as I drive onto the traffic circle | 2:49
and look up at that great tower, | 2:52
which was placed there so that it would give | 2:54
the image at the most central place. | 2:57
I'm struck by the awesomeness, not just of the building | 3:01
but of what the building symbolizes, | 3:05
the presence of God in the midst | 3:08
of an educational community. | 3:10
Christianity moves us to clarity | 3:12
and it moves us to learning, the uniting | 3:16
of piety and knowledge, | 3:20
our eruditio et religio, the motto of this university. | 3:25
We live in a time when American higher education, | 3:30
in the words of one major university president, | 3:33
is dominantly secular and materialistic. | 3:36
And it shouldn't surprise us that things | 3:40
are bad with higher education | 3:43
if that's the case. | 3:46
We need to reflect anew, on what it is | 3:50
that we are here for, what our purpose is. | 3:52
What values are about | 3:56
and what education is for, anyway? | 3:58
In the May 30th edition of Christian Century, | 4:03
just a few weeks ago, the very scintillating writer, | 4:07
Will Campbell, no relation to me, | 4:11
was quoted as saying about American higher education, | 4:16
this interesting sentence. | 4:19
"I think, he said, most kids today" | 4:21
"want to know what you're betting on," | 4:24
"what you're staking your life on" | 4:28
but educators are cagey because they're not betting | 4:31
on a damn thing, except maybe scholarship | 4:35
and that's a pretty shaky read. | 4:40
What is it that we're betting our life on? | 4:45
The Christian faith from Pentecost on has bet its life | 4:48
that God has given us a world that we can understand | 4:55
and that we can move in with effectiveness | 4:59
and therefore it has cultivated education | 5:02
and learning and thirdly, | 5:05
the great theme of Pentecost | 5:08
is this amazing theme of reversing | 5:10
the expectations of experience. | 5:14
Here at Pentecost, was the restoration of lost hopes, | 5:18
that was the gift through the grace of God | 5:23
of a new vision, so that the early church | 5:26
could go forth literally and turn | 5:29
the world upside down. | 5:32
The church was innervated with God's grace, | 5:35
to go and spread the good news. | 5:39
Well, this day is the celebration of Pentecost. | 5:42
We're celebrating the British-American festival. | 5:45
We're celebrating Duke alumni | 5:48
and this University and it is also another thing | 5:51
in the Christian community across this nation today. | 5:55
Some of you may know about it. | 5:58
It's what some have called Peace Pentecost. | 6:00
Some weeks ago on an airplane, | 6:05
I picked up an article in The New York Times | 6:07
about a Roman Catholic | 6:09
lay theologian named Jim Douglas. | 6:12
I was interested in this because about 15 years ago, | 6:15
I happened to meet this man | 6:19
and I was enormously impressed with his vision | 6:22
and with his commitment. | 6:26
As some of you may know, that Jim Douglas | 6:29
is now leading the efforts on the part | 6:31
of Christians in this nation, | 6:34
to oppose the so called White Train, | 6:36
that amazing snow-white train of the Department of Energy | 6:40
that plies the country from the Pantex plant | 6:44
in North Texas near Amarillo, | 6:47
up to Washington State | 6:50
or down to Charleston, South Carolina, | 6:53
carrying the latest shipment of nuclear warheads. | 6:55
And some Christians have been opposed | 7:00
to the proliferation of nuclear warheads | 7:03
and have formed a witness teams | 7:08
along the tracks of the White Train and today, | 7:12
as Peace Pentecost dawned, there were thousands | 7:16
of Christians bearing silent witness | 7:20
along the tracks, all across this nation, | 7:23
raising their heads and saying, | 7:27
the proliferation of nuclear | 7:31
warheads must stop | 7:34
for the future of the world, | 7:38
is not literally in man's hand | 7:41
but partially so. | 7:44 | |
Today is Peace Pentecost and the church | 7:49
has always stood for the reversing of expectations, | 7:51
believing that there could be surprises | 7:55
and new life possible. | 7:59
So, Pentecost comes but not only to us | 8:02
as an event of the past that happened to the early church. | 8:06
It comes, I tell you, to you and me today | 8:11
and to the church today just as surely, | 8:15
for the good news is that Pentecost | 8:18
is not just some historical matter | 8:21
that allows us to reflect on these great themes | 8:24
but today, our hearts | 8:29
can burn with the same flame | 8:31
of new life and possibility, | 8:35
to give us a world vision, | 8:38
to seek to make clear | 8:40
the great message | 8:43 | |
of values and concern, | 8:46
to change our hopes and expectations | 8:49
into reality and give us new life. | 8:53
The power of the Holy Spirit is as surely with us | 8:57
in this day as it was for the first disciples. | 9:01
This is the good news, that we can have this presence, | 9:06
God's promise and power. | 9:10
The 20th century British theologian J.S. Whale, | 9:14
said not too many years ago, | 9:18
without this fire of Pentecost, | 9:21
religion is dead ashes. | 9:26

Dean Campbell will be at the back of the chapel | 14:00
at the conclusion of the service | 14:03
for those of you who wish to greet him. | 14:04
Let us now unite in this historic confession | 14:07
of the Christian faith. | 14:10
I believe in God, the Father Almighty. | 14:12
- | Maker of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, | 14:16 |
His only son, our Lord, | 14:19
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, | 14:21
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, | 14:24
was crucified, dead, and buried. | 14:29
The third day, he rose from the dead. | 14:32
He ascended into heaven and sitteth | 14:34
at the right hand of God, the father almighty. | 14:37
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. | 14:40
I believe in the Holy Spirit, | 14:45
the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, | 14:46
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, | 14:51
and the life everlasting, amen. | 14:55
- | The Lord be with you. | 14:59 |
