The reading is number 640, let us stand. | 15:46
Who has believed what we have heard? | 15:56
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? | 15:59
For he grew up before him like a young plant. | 16:03
And like a root out of a dry ground. | 16:06
He who had no form or comeliness | 16:09
that we should look at him. | 16:11
And nothing in him that we should desire him. | 16:14
He was despised and rejected by men. | 16:16
A man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. | 16:20
And as one from whom men hid their faces. | 16:24
He was despised, and we received him not. | 16:28
Surely, he has borne our griefs | 16:31
and carried our sorrows. | 16:33
Yet we esteemed him stricken, | 16:36
smitten by God, and afflicted. | 16:38
But he was wounded for our transgressions. | 16:41
He was bruised for our iniquities. | 16:44
Upon him was the chastisement that made us whole. | 16:47
And with his stripes we are healed. | 16:51
All we like sheep have gone astray. | 16:54
We have turned every one to his own way. | 16:57
And the Lord has laid upon him the iniquity of us all. | 17:01
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, | 17:06
yet he opened not his mouth. | 17:10
Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter. | 17:12
And like a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, | 17:16
so he opened not his mouth. | 17:19
By oppression and judgment he was taken away. | 17:22
And as for his generation, | 17:27
who considered that he was cut off | 17:30
from the land of the living, | 17:32
stricken for the transgression of my people. | 17:35
And they made his grave with the wicked. | 17:39
And with a rich man in his death. | 17:41
Although he had done no violence. | 17:45
And there was no deceit in his mouth. | 17:48
Yet it was the will of the Lord to bruise him. | 17:51
He has put him to grief. | 17:55
When he makes an offering, | 17:58
made himself an offering for sin. | 18:00
He shall see his offspring, he shall prolong his days. | 18:02
The will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. | 18:08
He shall see the travail of his soul and be satisfied. | 18:12
By his knowledge shall the righteous one, | 18:18
my servant, make many to be accounted righteous. | 18:21
And he shall bear their iniquities. | 18:25
Therefore I will divide him for a portion with the great. | 18:28
And he shall divide the spoil with the strong. | 18:33
Because he poured out his soul to death. | 18:37
And he was numbered with the transgressors. | 18:40
Yet he bore the sin of many. | 18:43
And he makes intercession for the transgressors. | 18:47
Let us read together the opening sentences. | 19:09
And this is the judgment: | 19:13
that the light has come into the world | 19:15
and the people loved darkness rather than light. | 19:18
God is light in whom there is no darkness at all. | 19:23
For God sent the Son into the world | 19:28
not to condemn the world, | 19:31
but that the world might be saved through him. | 19:34
Everyone who does evil hates the light | 19:38
and does not come to the light. | 19:42
Come, let us worship in spirit and in truth. | 19:44
Selah. | 19:51 | |
Let us pray together now the prayer for illumination. | 20:03
Open our hearts and minds, oh God, | 20:07
by the power of your Holy Spirit | 20:11
so that as the Word is read and proclaimed, | 20:13
we might hear with joy what you say to us this day, amen. | 20:16
The Scripture lesson for this evening is taken | 20:24
from the Gospel of John 12:23-26: | 20:26
And Jesus assured them the hour has come | 20:33
for the Son of Man to be glorified. | 20:36
Truly, truly, I say to you unless a grain | 20:39
of wheat falls onto the earth and dies, | 20:42
it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit. | 20:45
He who loves his life loses it, | 20:50
but he who hates his life in this world | 20:53
will keep it for eternal life. | 20:56
If anyone serves me, he must follow me | 20:58
and where I am, there shall my servant be also. | 21:02
If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. | 21:06
This ends the reading of Scripture lesson. | 21:11

Let the words of my mouth | 24:34
and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable | 24:35
in thy sight oh Lord, our strength | 24:39
and our redeemer, amen. | 24:42
One warm night last December, | 24:48
I decided to to back to the office | 24:53
to work on law school recommendations | 24:55
and since I was planning to write recommendations | 25:00
for Dave and Paunch and Janet and another Dave, | 25:04
I was trying to get myself and my best fiction writing mood. | 25:09
(audience laughs) | 25:13
Now needing the inspiration of mood music, | 25:15
I turned on my favorite classical | 25:20
FM radio station hoping for Mozart, | 25:23
but willing to settle for Mahler | 25:28
and I pushed the preset button on the radio, | 25:31
the car radio, but unbeknownst to me, | 25:35
my teenage daughter, Holly, | 25:39
had reset the button to WLOUD. | 25:41
Now needing inspiration, not perspiration, | 25:48
I quickly turned the knob there | 25:53
to the first human voice that I could find | 25:56
and that first human voice turned out | 26:01
to be a radio evangelist. | 26:04
And I started to tune off and tune out, | 26:09
but before I could, I had to make a turn | 26:13
and in the passage of time, | 26:17
I became rather fascinated with the evangelist. | 26:19
The theology being preached and the style | 26:24
in which it was being presented were not exactly akin | 26:27
to anything I learned at Duke Divinity School | 26:30
and certainly not anything I heard at presbytery. | 26:32
But the theme of the message or the sermon | 26:37
or whatever seemed to be that the way to be successful | 26:39
in this world was to accept Jesus, | 26:44
be saved, be "borned again," an exact quote, | 26:47
and near the end of the broadcast | 26:52
in order to clinch the point of the sermon, | 26:55
letters of testimony were read | 26:57
and one particular seemed to get straight to the point. | 27:02
It read as I remember: Dear Preacher So-and-so, | 27:07
after years of being lost in sin, | 27:11
last Sunday night I was saved | 27:14
and I joined a church and guess what? | 27:16
Monday morning I opened the newspaper | 27:20
and I read that I had been the lucky winner | 27:23
of a new car in the drawing at the opening | 27:26
of a shopping center. | 27:28
Now, Preacher, I really believe! | 27:31
Hallelujah, bless Jesus. | 27:35
I mention all of this because in my own reading | 27:39
of the New Testament, I keep running across | 27:42
these phrases that say things like, | 27:45
"The person who loves his life, loses it, | 27:48
"and he who hates his life in this world | 27:52
"will keep it for eternal life." | 27:55
And "if anyone serves me, he must follow me." | 27:57
And "do not lay up for yourself treasures | 28:02
"on earth where moth and rust consume | 28:05
"and where thieves break in and steal, | 28:07
"but lay up for yourself treasures in heaven." | 28:10
And "if any person would come after me, | 28:13
"let him deny himself and take up his cross | 28:17
"and follow me." | 28:21 | |
I read these things, | 28:23
but nowhere in the New Testament do I read | 28:26
about guarantees of worldly success, | 28:29
nor do I read anything that evenly, | 28:31
even vaguely suggest, to use Waldo Beech's phrase | 28:34
that God is a cosmic bellboy available | 28:39
to serve his believers at their beck and call. | 28:43
In fact, the words of the New Testament seem | 28:48
to run in a contrary direction | 28:51
and they talk about the service | 28:54
that we are called upon to render. | 28:57
And strangely enough, even among us here this evening, | 29:02
there's a lingering hope that somehow going | 29:06
to church, saying our prayers, doing church-y things will | 29:10
at minimum propitiate God so that we will be freed | 29:14
of life's troubles and at maximum bring us good things: | 29:18
success, the ability, in the words | 29:23
of the commercial, to have it all. | 29:25
Over and over and over again. | 29:29
We need to remind ourselves | 29:33
that Jesus gathered the disciples there | 29:36
in the upper room to pass the cup, | 29:39
not to slice the pie. | 29:41
You know, part of this becomes evident, | 29:45
I think, by examining our misunderstanding | 29:46
of what taking up our crosses really means. | 29:51
Often, we've heard someone, perhaps even we ourselves, | 29:56
have said when going through a time of crisis, | 29:59
"Well, it's just a cross I have to bear." | 30:01
What we fail to realize is that our daily burdens are part | 30:07
of life, they come to us uninvited and unwelcome, | 30:12
to be sure, but they are not to be identified | 30:16
with or as crosses because they lack | 30:19
the one essential element of a cross: volunteerism. | 30:24
Crosses are extracurricular burdens we volunteer to accept | 30:31
and here's the point: commitment to the Christ | 30:36
of the cross does not mean that we will be relieved | 30:39
of daily, even lifelong burdens, | 30:43
though certainly we will receive help in bearing them, | 30:45
but rather commitment means that we volunteer | 30:49
to accept additional burdens for his sake. | 30:52
We volunteer to join him in his work, | 30:56
remembering ever the words of Washington Gladden's | 30:59
19th century hymn, "Oh master, let me walk with thee | 31:02
"in lowly paths of service free. | 31:07
"Tell me thy secret, help me bear | 31:10
"the strain of toil, the fret of care." | 31:12
You know, sometimes I have the haunting fear | 31:17
that I'm gonna turn on the radio | 31:19
and hear a 20th century instant salvation version | 31:21
of this hymn that will proclaim, | 31:24
"Oh master, let me ride with thee | 31:27
"on highways of glory and duty free. | 31:29
"Teach me thy secret of success. | 31:32
"Help me to put on permanent hold | 31:34
"the strain of toil, the fret of care." | 31:37
Or, by the way, almost the same idea | 31:42
of the real nature of commitment | 31:44
that Washington Gladden wrote about was expressed | 31:47
a century earlier by Isaac Watts when he wrote, | 31:49
"Must I be carried to the skies | 31:53
"on flowery beds of ease while others fought | 31:56
"to win the prize and sailed through bloody seas?" | 32:00
But in this age of computerized and sanitized commitments, | 32:05
this thought in the hands of the media might well become, | 32:10
"May I be carried to the skies | 32:13
"on flowery beds of ease letting others fight | 32:16
"to win the prize and sail through bloody seas?" | 32:19
Yet while we reject the rewrites | 32:25
of the hymns, both literally and spiritually, | 32:27
we keep hoping that maybe, just maybe, | 32:31
the supply of crosses will run out before they get to us | 32:34
so that we can feel good about volunteering | 32:38
without having to accept and so we become, | 32:41
to use Mark Twain's phrase, | 32:45
"as happy as a martyr when the fire won't light." | 32:46
Oh, for service with an escape clause! | 32:50
Or if they do get to us in the distribution | 32:53
of crosses, please let mine be convenient. | 32:56
I am so busy! | 32:59 | |
Let me close with the story that is | 33:04
most certainly apocryphal, | 33:06
and I say most certainly because it contains | 33:09
too much concentrated truth ever really | 33:11
to have happened this way. | 33:15
Many years ago on a certain section | 33:18
of northwest coast of England | 33:22
where a number of shipwrecks had been occurring, | 33:25
a group of concerned citizens got together | 33:29
and they formed a rescue society. | 33:31
They made their headquarters in an old lighthouse | 33:34
and whenever there was a shipwreck | 33:37
in the icy waters off the coast, | 33:39
they went out in small boats to rescue | 33:41
the victims of the shipwreck. | 33:43
And after a while, some other citizens, | 33:46
recognizing the value of this service | 33:48
and wanting to help, contributed money | 33:51
to fix up that lighthouse, | 33:53
and they built a club room for these rescue workers | 33:56
to spend their long hours of waiting in, | 34:00
and they bought some comfortable furniture | 34:03
and some games for the workers to play there | 34:04
in that long wait. | 34:07
But as time and such a story would have it, | 34:11
the room became so very comfortable | 34:15
that rescue workers gradually became reluctant | 34:19
to leave this comfort and venture out | 34:22
on the treacherous seas to perform | 34:24
their acts of service. | 34:26
And realizing that this rescue society, | 34:29
this agency of service, was becoming nothing more | 34:31
than a club for the enjoyment of its members, | 34:34
another group, another group of people | 34:37
further up the coast found another lighthouse | 34:41
and set up another rescue mission | 34:44
and before long, it too was made comfortable | 34:46
and the process repeated itself or, | 34:50
well, the beat goes on. | 34:54
And now, according to this story, | 34:57
this whole area of the northwest coast | 34:59
of England is dotted with country clubs, | 35:02
but there are no rescue missions, no service agencies. | 35:05
Now there is in that story a personal | 35:11
as well as an institutional moral | 35:16
or immoral, depending on how you look at it, | 35:19
for it illustrates the fact | 35:22
that the true way of life is to be found | 35:24
not in a cornucopia, but on the arms of a cross. | 35:28
Amen, let us pray. | 35:36
As we pass the cup and dim the candles, | 35:39
may we remember that our lives are weighed not | 35:42
in terms of success, | 35:45
but in large measure by service. | 35:48
May we internalize the authentic words | 35:51
of Washington Gladden, "Oh master, | 35:54
"let me walk with thee | 35:57
"in lowly paths of service free. | 35:58
"Tell me thy secret, help me bear | 36:01
