Let us ask God to forgive us. | 20:17
Oh mighty God, you love us | 20:21
but we have not loved you. | 20:24
You called but we have not listened. | 20:26
We walk away from neighbors in need, | 20:30
wrapped up in our own concerns. | 20:33
We have gone along with evil, with prejudice, | 20:36
warfare, and greed. | 20:40
Help us face up to ourselves | 20:43
so that as you move toward us in mercy, | 20:46
we may repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness | 20:50
through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen. | 20:56
Dear people of God, | 21:01
believe in the good news of the gospel. | 21:04
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. | 21:08
- | May I say a word of welcome to you on this day | 21:34 |
when we come together in the name and in the spirit | 21:40
of our Lord Jesus Christ and particularly | 21:42
when we have the privilege of breaking bread | 21:45
and sharing the cup together | 21:49
in the sacrament of our Lord's supper. | 21:51
Two words of announcement. | 21:55
One is that beginning next Sunday evening | 21:57
at 7:30, the Faith and Arts Committee | 22:01
of the Duke University Parish Ministry, | 22:04
we'll sponsor the first of a series | 22:06
of historical worship services. | 22:09
Professor Robert Gregg, professor of church history | 22:13
and the divinity school, will | 22:17
conduct a second century eucharistic service. | 22:19
You are welcome and are invited | 22:23
to ask others to come and share | 22:26
in that special service with us. | 22:28
There will be other special services | 22:30
to follow and words about those | 22:33
will come at an appropriate time. | 22:34
The beginning of a new semester means | 22:38
that we have to have a new request for volunteers | 22:41
to serve as chapel attendants. | 22:49
If you are here or if you know someone | 22:52
who would be interested in serving | 22:54
as a volunteer attendant on Friday or Saturday evenings, | 22:56
we would be pleased to have your services. | 23:03
The chapel is open from eight in the morning | 23:05
to eight at night, by paid staff from eight | 23:07
until 11, by volunteer staff, we'd like | 23:11
to keep the chapel open every day | 23:13
from eight in the morning until 11 at night. | 23:16
If you are interested, let us know | 23:19
by leaving your name at the desk as you leave this morning. | 23:22
Let us hear the word of God. | 23:27
First, from the Old Testament from the book of Isaiah, | 23:30
these words. | 23:34 | |
Is such the fast that I choose a day | 23:36
for a man to humble himself? | 23:40
Is it to bow down his head like a rush | 23:44
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? | 23:46
Will you call this a fast and a day | 23:49
acceptable to the Lord? | 23:52
Is not this the fast that I choose? | 23:55
To loose the bonds of wickedness. | 23:59
To undo the thongs of the yoke. | 24:02
To let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke. | 24:04
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry | 24:09
and bring the homeless poor into your house? | 24:12
When you see the naked, to cover him | 24:16
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? | 24:18
Then shall your light break forth like the dawn | 24:22
and your healing shall spring up speedily. | 24:25
Your righteousness shall go before you. | 24:29
The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. | 24:32
Then you shall call and the Lord will answer. | 24:35
You shall cry and he will say here I am. | 24:38
If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, | 24:43
the pointing of the finger, | 24:47
and speaking wickedness, | 24:50
if you pour out yourself for the hungry | 24:53
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, | 24:56
then shall your light rise in the darkness | 24:59
and your bloom be as the noon day | 25:02
and the Lord will continually guide you | 25:05
and satisfy your desire with good things | 25:08
and make your bones strong | 25:11
and you shall be like a watered garden, | 25:14
like a spring of water whose waters fail not | 25:18
and your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt. | 25:22
You shall raise up the foundations of many generations. | 25:26
You shall be called the repairer of the breach, | 25:30
the restorer of streets to dwell in. | 25:33
Here ends the reading of the Old Testament lesson. | 25:38
Let us hear the reading from the gospel. | 25:42
Will you stand for the reading of the gospel? | 25:45
From the gospel according to St. Matthew, | 25:51
chapter five, verses 13 through 16. | 25:52
Jesus said you are the salt of the earth | 25:57
but if salt has lost its taste, | 26:02
how shall its saltness be restored? | 26:04
It is no longer good for anything | 26:07
except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by man. | 26:10
You are the light of the world, | 26:14
a city set on a hill cannot be hid | 26:16
nor do men light up a lamp and put it under a bushel | 26:19
but on a stand and it gives light | 26:23
to all in the house. | 26:25
Let your light so shine before all people | 26:28
that they may see your good works | 26:32
and give glory to your father who is in heaven. | 26:34
Amen. | 26:38 | |
Here ends the reading of the gospel lesson. | 26:39
To God be the praise and the glory. | 26:42
You may be seated. | 26:45
We come today to confess, | 26:52
to receive forgiveness, to pray for others, | 26:57
to respond to God's invitation to the table of our Lord, | 27:01
to share again in the bread and wine, | 27:05
the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ | 27:07
and to depart from this place, | 27:11
to love and serve in the name and in the spirit | 27:12
of Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 27:15
In the Old Testament lesson for this, | 27:18
the fifth Sunday after Epiphany, | 27:21
Isaiah warns us of the fast that God | 27:24
does not want from us | 27:28
and then tells us of the fast that God does want, | 27:31
the fast that brings that deep satisfaction our souls | 27:35
and spirits constantly are seeking. | 27:39
Listen again to the words from Isaiah. | 27:42
He says, Is not this the fast that I choose? | 27:45
To loose the bonds of wickedness, | 27:48
to undo the thongs of the yoke, | 27:51
to let the oppressed go free | 27:53
and to break every yoke. | 27:55
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry | 27:58
and bring the homeless poor into your house? | 28:00
If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, | 28:04
the pointing of the finger, | 28:08
and speaking wickedness, | 28:10
if you pour out yourself for the hungry | 28:12
and satisfy the desires of the afflicted, | 28:15
then shall your light rise in the darkness | 28:18
and the Lord will guide you continually | 28:23
and satisfy your desire with good things | 28:25
and make your bones strong and you | 28:28
shall be like a watered garden, | 28:30
like a spring of water whose waters fail not. | 28:35
The deep satisfaction comes as we do realize the ties | 28:40
that bind us to one another | 28:46
and thus move as to work to let the oppressed go free | 28:49
and to share our bread, | 28:52
to bring to others a sense of dignity, | 28:55
a sense of worth, a sense of belonging | 28:57
and to share ourselves, our bread and meat, | 29:00
our very selves, to bring life to others. | 29:03
If we take out of our midst the yoke, | 29:09
the pointing of the finger, the speaking | 29:13
of wickedness, Isaiah says, if these | 29:15
are taken from our midst, then Isaiah says, | 29:17
the deep satisfactions of life will be ours, | 29:20
light in darkness, guidance from the Lord, | 29:23
satisfaction of good things, strong bones, | 29:27
we will be like a watered garden. | 29:30
We will be like a spring of water. | 29:31
We will be like ruins that shall be rebuilt | 29:34
that like foundations that hold generations, | 29:36
like the repairer of the breach, | 29:40
like the one who restores the streets, | 29:43
the deep satisfaction comes from knowing, | 29:46
as Comedian Dick Gregory said on one occasion, | 29:49
we are not our brother's keeper, | 29:52
we are our brother's brother, | 29:56
we are brothers and sisters one to another | 29:59
or as Peggy Way said here recently | 30:03
when she was meeting and sharing with some of us, | 30:06
we are not called as Christians to cure other people | 30:09
but to care for others. | 30:15
Or as Norman C. Hobble writes | 30:19
in his poem entitled "Lord". | 30:22
For every time you break a tie | 30:26
or harm someone inside by the way you act | 30:28
or what you say, you have split the cord of love | 30:31
and torn the tie with God a little more. | 30:37
That covenant of life that he has spun with thorns | 30:40
and nails and blood at Calvary. | 30:44
If for a moment you can feel yourself alone, | 30:48
torn free from all the moorings, | 30:53
cut off from all the ties with men and God, | 30:55
all the ties that give life meaning, | 30:58
if you can see your selfish self | 31:00
floating off alone because you only love your world | 31:03
instead of loving others, then perhaps the dream | 31:08
of a new bond made by God, a new covenant of life | 31:11
which we certainly don't deserve | 31:15
may not be quite so strange. | 31:18
So if you're not too proud, he says, | 31:24
too busy or too old, I will throw you my forgiveness | 31:27
as I did when men like you were coldly | 31:32
nailing me to the splintered stake of death. | 31:35
My forgiveness reaches out as you hear me cry, | 31:38
you're in as you see me sweat and die | 31:41
for all the broken ties, all the broken ties | 31:44
between mankind and God. | 31:48
Because I bring forgiveness, I really bring you God | 31:51
and I become the new tie, the new cord, the new covenant, | 31:56
binding you to God as new people, freed people, | 31:59
my people. | 32:04 | |
For this new cord means binding wounds | 32:06
and that can often mean that you must suffer | 32:09
in the process as you, like me, | 32:12
put forgiveness into action, | 32:14
learning to accept where you have been forgiven | 32:17
and learning how to give yourselves from me | 32:19
so that you can show forgiveness, hope, and love | 32:23
in a way your life can be a happening with hands | 32:27
reaching out, taking hold, hanging on, | 32:30
feeling others, serving love from me. | 32:33
I'm waiting for you to take my forgiveness | 32:37
and mend the ties that you have broken | 32:40
and others, too, have broken. | 32:43
I'm waiting, I'm waiting for you, I'm waiting | 32:45
and you shall be like a watered garden. | 32:50
Like a spring of water. | 32:56
Amen. | 33:01 | |
- | Christ, our Lord, invites to his table all | 33:22 |
who love him and to who desire to live in peace | 33:28
with one another. | 33:33
May the peace of the Lord be with you. | 33:35
(crowd mumbling) | 33:39
As forgiven and reconciled people, | 33:41
let us offer ourselves and our gifts to God. | 33:45
(downbeat organ music) | 33:54
(operatic singing) | 35:56
(downbeat organ music) | 41:29
(operatic singing) | 41:54
- | The Lord is with you. | 43:08 |
Audience | And with you also. | 43:10 |
- | Lift up your hearts. | 43:13 |
(mumbling) | 43:15 | |
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. | 43:17
Audience | It is right to give God thanks and praise. | 43:21 |
- | Oh God, it is right that we should always | 43:25 |
and everywhere give you thanks and praise. | 43:28
We thank you, holy God, that you loved the world so much, | 43:33
you sent your only son to be our savior. | 43:38
The Lord of all life came to live among us. | 43:41
He healed and taught people, ate with sinners, | 43:46
and won for you a new people | 43:52
by water and the spirit. | 43:53
We remember that on the night in which he | 43:58
gave himself up for us, | 44:00
the Lord Jesus took bread. | 44:04
After giving you thanks, he broke the bread, | 44:07
gave it to his disciples and said, | 44:11
"Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you." | 44:15
When the supper was over, he took the cup. | 44:24
Again he returned thanks to you, | 44:29
gave the cup to his disciples and said, | 44:33
"Drink from this, all of you. | 44:38
"This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood | 44:42
"poured out for you and many, | 44:46
"for forgiveness of sins." | 44:50
When we eat this bread and drink this cup, | 44:55
we experience anew the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ | 44:59
and look forward to his coming in final victory. | 45:04
Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving | 45:09
in union with Christ's offering for us | 45:13
as a reasonable and holy surrender of ourselves, | 45:16
send the power of your holy spirit on us | 45:20
gathered here out of love for you | 45:24
and on these gifts. | 45:27
Help us know in the breaking of this bread, | 45:29
the presence of Christ who gave his body | 45:32
and blood for all people. | 45:36
Make us one with Christ, one with each other, | 45:39
and one in service to all people | 45:43
through your son, Jesus Christ, | 45:47
with the holy spirit in your holy church, | 45:50
all glory and honor is yours, God almighty. | 45:53
Because there is one loaf, we, many as we are, | 46:05
are one body for it is one loaf | 46:10
of which we all partake. | 46:13
When we break this bread, | 46:19
is it not a means of sharing in the body of Christ? | 46:21
When we give thanks over the cup, | 46:32
is it not a means of sharing in the blood of Christ? | 46:36
(whispering) | 46:53 | |
The body of Christ broken for you. | 47:01
The blood of Christ shed for you. | 47:09
(downbeat organ music) | 47:34
- | The choir will now form two concentric circles | 48:20 |
around the altar. | 48:24
After they have been served, | 48:27
we invite each of you who desire to commune | 48:30
to come forward and form two concentric circles. | 48:35
The ushers will direct you. | 48:41
- | Blessed are the poor in spirit | 53:07 |
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | 53:10
Go in peace. | 53:13 | |
(operatic singing) | 55:30
- | Jesus said, I'm the bread of life. | 1:01:08 |
Whoever feeds on me will never hunger. | 1:01:12
Go in peace and may the bread of heaven | 1:01:17
nourish your souls to everlasting life. | 1:01:20
Amen. | 1:01:24 | |
(operatic singing) | 1:04:37
- | And Jesus said blessed are those mourned | 1:08:27 |
for they shall be comforted. | 1:08:32
Go in peace. | 1:08:35 | |
(operatic singing) | 1:12:33
- | Jesus said "I'm the good shepherd. | 1:16:35 |
"I know my own, my own know me." | 1:16:37
Go in peace and may the grace | 1:16:40
of our Lord Jesus Christ make you strong | 1:16:43
to do his will in all things, amen. | 1:16:45
- | And Jesus said "Blessed are the meek | 1:20:42 |
"for they shall inherit the earth." | 1:20:46
Go now in peace. | 1:20:49
Has anyone been omitted on my left or my right? | 1:21:37
Are there any who desire to commune at their seats? | 1:21:45
If so, please raise your hand | 1:21:48
and the ushers will direct us to you. | 1:21:49
You have given yourself to us, oh Lord. | 1:23:47
Now we give ourselves for others. | 1:23:51
Your love has made us a new people. | 1:23:55
As a people of love, we will serve you with joy. | 1:23:58
Your glory has filled our hearts. | 1:24:03
Help us to glorify you in all things, amen. | 1:24:06
(downbeat organ music) | 1:24:16
And now may the grace of God | 1:28:41
and the sweet communion of the holy spirit | 1:28:45
rest, rule, and abide with you all henceforth now | 1:28:47
and forevermore. | 1:28:51
(indistinct choir singing) | 1:29:01
(downbeat organ music) | 1:30:15
(chattering) | 1:35:37 |
