Come then. | 16:59 | |
Let us as his disciples join at table with him in awe | 17:01
and reverence and thanksgiving. | 17:07

The Gospel lesson is taken from | 19:39
the Gospel of Mark, the 14th chapter. | 19:42
In the evening he came to the house with the 12. | 19:50
As they sat at supper, Jesus said, | 19:56
"I tell you this. | 19:59 | |
"One of you will betray me, | 20:01
"one who is eating with me." | 20:04
At this, they were dismayed, and one by one, | 20:08
they said to him, "Not I, surely." | 20:13
- | Not I, surely. | 20:19 |
- | Not I, surely. | 20:21 |
- | Not I, surely. | 20:23 |
- | "It is one of the 12," he said, | 20:26 |
"who is dipping into the same bowl with me, | 20:30
"the son of man is going the way | 20:34
"appointed for him in the scriptures | 20:37
"but alas for that man by whom the son of man is betrayed, | 20:40
"it would be better for that man | 20:45
"if he had never been born." | 20:48
Here, the lesson ends. | 20:52
Not I, surely. | 21:09 | |
Here we are, | 21:13 | |
the devout, | 21:15 | |
the respectable | 21:18 | |
who gather in this sanctuary to remember | 21:20
and participate in our Lord's last supper. | 21:24
Good people, nice people, all of us, | 21:31
disciples, | 21:35 | |
but the word of our Lord is shocking | 21:39
and offense, one of you will betray me. | 21:42
His searching penetrating | 21:49
eye moves around our circle | 21:52
and we are quick to protest, none of us is Judas, | 21:58
not I, surely. | 22:04 | |
We are faithful followers, | 22:08
albeit at some distance. | 22:11
We hasten in our self defensiveness to hide | 22:15
from the searching eye | 22:19
to protest our innocence, | 22:22
but the words of instruction in the sacrament are spoken, | 22:27
this is the new covenant in my blood, | 22:32
poured out for you and for many. | 22:38
That word, if we can hear it truly, cuts, | 22:44
cuts against us, | 22:49 | |
who are the many. | 22:54 | |
The eight year old girl in the Sub-Sahara desert, | 23:00
walking in the heat from her family hut | 23:05
eight miles back and forth, | 23:11
to the well to carry the bucket of water that must do | 23:15
for the drinking, cooking, washing | 23:19
for her family for the night. | 23:22
The family in Liberia, sleeping out overnight | 23:29
in the long line, waiting for medical attention | 23:34
at the single medical clinic | 23:39
that must serve 5,000 people. | 23:42
The old couple, in an Appalachian mountain hamlet | 23:48
who freeze to death in their shack | 23:54
for lack of insulation against last winter's storms. | 23:59
Who are the many? | 24:05 | |
10,000 people who die everyday from starvation | 24:09
and the diseases that follow malnutrition. | 24:15
And who are we? | 24:21 | |
We are the affluent, the comfortable, | 24:25
the obese, the overfed. | 24:28
We are the faculty who's chief demand of | 24:34
the university is for more parking lots. | 24:38
We are the students | 24:43
who protest the suffering | 24:46
exacted in the proposed renewal | 24:49
of eight o clock classes. | 24:53
We are of the fraternity spending how much | 24:58
on a beer blast as against how much | 25:04
as sponsors for those who walk | 25:11
in the crop walk for hunger. | 25:14
We are Americans. | 25:18
Six percent of the world's population | 25:21
who use 50% | 25:24 | |
of the world's natural resources | 25:27
who engage blithely in a prodigal waste of energy | 25:31
in our production and consumption of goods, | 25:35
in a throwaway culture, we pollute the air, | 25:39
the landscape, the streams, | 25:44
the good earth of the Lord. | 25:48
We endanger the very life of generations | 25:51
and generations of the many to come in posterity | 25:55
by using nuclear energy | 26:01
so that we may be | 26:04 | |
well lighted, well cooled, well heated, | 26:06
and get there faster, | 26:12
whatever be our destination, | 26:16
worthy or not. | 26:19 | |
But ours is not the direct betrayal of Christ | 26:25
by a Judas, | 26:30 | |
but an indirect betrayal, a violation | 26:33
of his radical commandment to love, | 26:35
to seek justice for these many | 26:39
whose wellbeing depends | 26:43
in good measure on our lifestyle. | 26:45
Our villainy is hidden, even from ourselves. | 26:51
It's a benign neglect of human need, | 26:56
yet if we dare to be honest, | 27:03
we can confess with more than | 27:09
a perfunctory mumble of words, | 27:12
our sin, in genuine contrition | 27:15
and sing in the words of the hymn Ah Holy Jesus. | 27:19
Who was the guilty, | 27:25
who brought this upon thee? | 27:28
Alas, my treason Jesus hath undone thee, | 27:32
it was I, Lord Jesus, | 27:36
it was I denied thee, | 27:40
I crucified thee. | 27:42
Yet the final word of the Gospel | 27:48
is not judgment, | 27:53 | |
the final word is forgiveness and grace. | 27:55
The traditional words of the invitation to the Lord's table, | 28:01
"Come, take this holy sacrament | 28:07
to your comfort, | 28:12 | |
"if we come in contrition, acknowledging our betrayal, | 28:16
"we may partake of the elements to our spiritual comfort | 28:22
"if, if, | 28:28 | |
"only if we resolve to share | 28:32
the bread and wine here | 28:37
"with those in need, | 28:41
"to live more simply that others may simply live, | 28:45
"to walk in newness of life, to bear witness | 28:50
"in our lifestyle to the Lordship of him | 28:53
"whom we have crucified, but who has risen | 28:59
"and moves silently among us | 29:05
by the grace of the Holy Spirit | 29:09
"along with us on | 29:14 | |
new paths of righteousness." | 29:17
Amen. | 29:23 | |

- | Not I, surely. | 34:43 |
If we say we have no sin, | 34:48
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. | 34:52
Let us confess our sin. | 35:00
Oh, God, our God, | 35:05 | |
blessed, all wise, and eternal, | 35:08
hear our confession, | 35:13
and by such mercies as we cannot give one another, | 35:16
save us from our sins, | 35:20
for we persist in our darknesses | 35:23
and tangibly break and destroy the flesh of the world | 35:26
and the souls of its people, | 35:31
we continue the wars, we live off the misery of others, | 35:34
we permit the comfortable lies, | 35:39
even more, we wear the masks of righteousness, | 35:43
and absolve ourselves from the crimes. | 35:48
Now as we eat and drink the broken bread | 35:52
and the wine of suffering, soul nourish us | 35:55
that we desire again to risk ourselves for healing, | 36:00
even as Jesus who on the dark tree | 36:05
broke himself for all the earth, amen. | 36:10
For I am persuaded | 36:20
that neither death nor life | 36:25
nor angels nor principalities, | 36:29
nor things present, nor things to come, | 36:34
nor powers, nor height, nor death | 36:38
nor anything else in all creation | 36:44
shall be able to separate us from the love of God | 36:50
which is ours in Christ Jesus, our Lord. | 36:56
Amen. | 37:04 | |
Will you stand please? | 37:07
Christ our Lord invites | 37:21
to his table | 37:25 | |
us | 37:29 | |
and all those who love him | 37:31
and who desire to live in peace and love with one another. | 37:35
And so my friends, may the peace of the Lord | 37:43
be with you always. | 37:49
- | As also with you. | 37:53 |
- | As forgiven and reconciled people, | 37:56 |
let us now offer ourselves and our gifts to God. | 38:00
Amen. | 38:05 | |
Be seated. | 38:07 | |
(organ music begins) | 38:13

(choir singing hymn brightly) | 43:47
The Lord is with you. | 44:40
- | And with you also. | 44:42 |
- | Lift up your hearts. | 44:44 |
(all talking in distance) | 44:46
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. | 44:48
(all talking in distance) | 44:52
Oh God, | 44:55 | |
it is right that we should always | 44:57
and everywhere give you thanks and praise. | 44:59
We thank you Holy God, | 45:05
that you love the world and each of us so much | 45:08
that you sent your only son to be our savior. | 45:13
The Lord of all life came to live among us. | 45:17
He healed and taught people, | 45:22
ate with sinners, | 45:25
and won for you a new people by water and the spirit. | 45:28
We remember, oh God, that on the night | 45:34
in which he gave himself up for us, | 45:36
our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, | 45:38
and after giving you thanks he broke the bread, | 45:42
gave it to his disciples and said, | 45:46
"Take, eat, this is my body, | 45:48
"which is given for you." | 45:53
When the supper was over, he took the cup, | 45:58
again he returned thanks to you, | 46:01
gave the cup to his disciples and said, | 46:04
"Drink from this, all of you. | 46:07
"This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood | 46:12
"poured out for you and for many | 46:14
"for the forgiveness of sins." | 46:18
And so when we eat this bread and drink | 46:23
this cup we experience anew, | 46:25
the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ | 46:28
and we look forward to his coming in final victory. | 46:33
(all praying at once in distance) | 46:39
Make us one with Christ, | 47:12
one with each other, | 47:14
and one in service to all people | 47:16
through your son Jesus Christ, | 47:20
with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, | 47:23
all glory and honor is yours, God Almighty | 47:26
because there is one loaf, | 47:32
we many as we are are yet one body. | 47:34
For it is of one loaf of which we all partake. | 47:40
When we break the bread, is it not a means | 47:46
of sharing in the body of Christ? | 47:49
And when we give thanks over the cup, | 47:55
is it not a means of sharing in the blood of Christ? | 47:59
(talking in distance) | 48:19
As is our custom here, | 49:55
we invite you together around the table of our Lord, | 49:58
in one circle tonight, | 50:02
first those on my left, or on your right, | 50:05
and then those on my right, | 50:09
or on your left as you face the alter. | 50:11
The choir will come as the first table, | 50:14
and following the serving of the choir | 50:18
the ushers will assist you and then you | 50:19
to receive this blessed sacrament. | 50:23

(classical organ music) | 52:14
Our Lord Jesus Christ said blessed | 52:33
are the pure in spirit | 52:35
for theirs is the kingdom of God. | 52:38
My friends as you have now received the body | 52:44
and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 52:46
of him who gave himself body, soul, | 52:50
and spirit for you and for me, | 52:53
will you receive this blessed sacrament with thanksgiving | 52:57
and go now renewed in spirit | 53:02
to love and serve in the name of our Lord. | 53:05
Arise and go in peace and may the peace of God be with you. | 53:10
Amen. | 53:15 | |

(soft classical organ music) | 56:45
Our Lord Jesus said blessed are the pure in heart | 57:52
for they shall see God | 57:57
on this Holy Night my friends | 58:02
as you have gathered around the table of our Lord | 58:06
and received his body and his blood, | 58:09
may you know that purity of heart | 58:13
that comes when we open ourselves | 58:17
to receive the spirit of the Christ, | 58:19
and may you see not only the living presence of God | 58:24
but may you also see your neighbor | 58:29
and love your neighbor as God surely loves us. | 58:32
Arise beloved and go in peace, | 58:38
and may the peace of God be with you. | 58:41
Amen. | 58:46 | |

Our Lord Jesus said blessed are those who | 1:03:49
hunger and thirst after righteousness | 1:03:52
for they shall be satisfied. | 1:03:57
My friends, you and we have come to this table | 1:04:03
hungering and thirsting for the righteousness, | 1:04:06
the rightness, the goodness, | 1:04:10
which only God and God's spirit can give, | 1:04:13
and so as you have received the body and blood | 1:04:17
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, | 1:04:19
would you leave this place continuing | 1:04:23
to hunger and thirst, seeking that | 1:04:26
righteousness which is from thou. | 1:04:30
And in so doing may you know the joy | 1:04:35
and the love and the peace which comes from God. | 1:04:39
Arise now beloved and go in peace | 1:04:45
and may the peace of God be with you. | 1:04:48
Amen. | 1:04:53 | |
(classical organ music) | 1:04:56
Tomorrow at noon | 1:06:25
we will share here in the chapel | 1:06:27
in a service in observance of Good Friday. | 1:06:33
The service will last from 12 until one, | 1:06:40
but from one until 3:30, there will be music | 1:06:45
for meditation and reflection, | 1:06:49
and of course the chapel will be open all day for the same. | 1:06:52
Now having received this blessed sacrament | 1:06:57
of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 1:07:00
will you join with me as we offer to God, | 1:07:03
this prayer of Thanksgiving | 1:07:06
and our words of commitment? | 1:07:09
Let us pray. | 1:07:12 | |
You have given yourself to us, oh Lord. | 1:07:15
- | Now we give ourselves for others. | 1:07:19 |
- | Your love has made us a new people. | 1:07:21 |
- | As a people of love we will serve you with joy. | 1:07:25 |
- | Your glory has filled our hearts. | 1:07:29 |
- | Help us to glorify you in all things. | 1:07:32 |
- | Amen. | 1:07:36 |

and give you peace on this night | 1:12:11
and forevermore. | 1:12:16
Amen. | 1:12:19 | |
