Let us come before God, | 22:20
to confess our corporate and personal sin, | 22:22
as we pray. | 22:25 | |
- | This is our poverty, | 22:28 |
that we do not belong to each other, | 22:31
nor serve one another. | 22:34
We go each our own way, | 22:36
and do not care for our neighbor. | 22:39
We pray thee, O Lord, | 22:42
redeem us from this estrangement. | 22:45
Redeem us out of this loneliness, | 22:48
Deliver us from the sin that divides us. | 22:52
Join us closely in true love. | 22:55
Have mercy upon all thy children. | 22:59
Lord, we believe, | 23:02
help thou our unbelief, | 23:05
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 23:08
- | Amen. | 23:11 |
If we confess our sins to God, | 23:45
he keeps his promise and does what is right. | 23:49
He forgives us our sins, | 23:52
and purifies us from our wrongdoing. | 23:55
Let us give thanks for God is good, | 24:00
and God's love is everlasting. | 24:03
(congregation mumbling) | 24:06
- | Let us pray. | 24:31 |
Prepare our hearts, oh Lord, | 24:36
to accept your word. | 24:39
Silence in us any voice but your own | 24:41
that hearing we may also obey your will | 24:46
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 24:50
Amen. | 24:52 | |

"His head and his hair we white as wool, | 26:47

"and his voice was like the sound of many waters. | 26:59
"In his right hand he held seven stars. | 27:04
"From his mouth issued a sharp two-edged sword | 27:07
"and his face was like the sun shining | 27:10
"in full strength. | 27:13
"When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead | 27:15
"but he laid his right hand upon me saying, | 27:19
"fear not, I am the first and the last | 27:22
"and the living one. | 27:26
"I died. | 27:28 | |
"Behold, I am alive forever more | 27:29

The Gospel lesson is from the 20th of John, | 33:17
verses 19 through 31. | 33:19
"On the evening of that day, | 33:22
"the first day of the week, | 33:24
"the doors being shut where the disciples were | 33:25
"for fear of the Jews, | 33:28

"peace be with you. | 33:32
"When he had said this, | 33:34
"he showed them his hands and his side. | 33:36
"Then the disciples were glad | 33:38
"when they saw the Lord. | 33:40
"Jesus said to them again, | 33:41
"peace be with you. | 33:43
"As the Father has sent me, even so I send you | 33:45
"and when he had said this, | 33:50

In the name of the Lord our God, | 36:29

Amen. | 36:39 | |
John, the man who wrote | 36:44
the book of Revelation | 36:48
must have been a | 36:50 | |
distinctively good man. | 36:52
Apparently, he had taken good care of himself physically | 36:57
for he had lived to a ripe old age, | 37:03
at least a ripe old age for his own day and time. | 37:05
He had become a deeply devout follower | 37:12
of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 37:16
He had deep personal convictions about who Christ was | 37:19
and what following the lordship of Christ | 37:24
was to mean to his brothers and sisters in Christ. | 37:27
It was precisely this commitment to witness | 37:33
and his own witnessing | 37:37
that had gotten him in prison where he was. | 37:39
He tells us, | 37:44 | |
"I was put on the island named Patmos | 37:47
"because I had proclaimed God's word | 37:51
"and the truth that Jesus revealed." | 37:54
That's all he had done. | 37:56
"I had proclaimed God's word | 38:00
"and the truth that Jesus revealed." | 38:02
That's all. | 38:04 | |
But that was enough to get him put in prison. | 38:06
He was a good man | 38:12 | |
because of his love and concern for others. | 38:12
One reading through the book of Revelation | 38:16
is convinced is that he had a deep and genuine | 38:18
and abiding love for others. | 38:21
His vision on Patmos | 38:25
and the writing of the book of Revelation, he tells us | 38:27
at the beginning | 38:29 | |
were given him by God | 38:31
for him to show God's servants, | 38:34
and God's children what must happen very soon. | 38:39
It is as if he and the writer of I John | 38:44
are of one mind and one spirit. | 38:47
The writer of I John says, | 38:50
"Little children, let us not love in word or speech | 38:52
"but in deed and in truth. | 38:56
"Beloved, let us love one another | 38:59
"for love is of God. | 39:01
"And those who love are born of God and know God. | 39:05
"If we love one another, | 39:10
"God abides in us and God's love is perfected in us." | 39:11
Or as John Powell writes in his little book on prayer | 39:17
entitled "He Touched Me," | 39:20
"Wherever I have seen love, | 39:23
"I have seen and felt the presence of God. | 39:27
"God present and alive and active | 39:32
"in the hearts and lives and sprits of people." | 39:35
John who wrote Revelation | 39:41
was a good man, | 39:45 | |
a caring man, | 39:48 | |
a man of faith, | 39:50 | |
one who spoke with authority, | 39:52
one whose word would have meaning and validity | 39:54
for those to whom he was writing. | 39:57
So that if he gave a word of correction, | 40:01
it would be taken seriously. | 40:03
If he gave a word of encouragement, | 40:06
then it would be received gratefully | 40:09
and gladly so that when John says, | 40:11
"I, John, share with you | 40:15
in union with Jesus | 40:19
your suffering, | 40:24 | |
"his kingdom and in enduring," | 40:27
I believe that that word was received with an open mind | 40:33
and spirit and was received with deep gratitude. | 40:37
It seems to me then highly appropriate | 40:42
that we have a word from this good man | 40:44
on this last closing Sunday | 40:47
of this academic year. | 40:50
Thus the epistle lesson for this second Sunday | 40:52
after Easter is from Revelation, the first chapter. | 40:55
Another academic year over and finished. | 41:01
Well, for some of you, almost over and finished anyhow. | 41:05
It hardly seems possible | 41:12
and yet it is. | 41:16 | |
As together we look back on the past eight months, | 41:19
at first it appears that time has gone by very, very quickly | 41:22
and then upon reflection, | 41:27
much has happened, and the time indeed, | 41:29
has been very, very full. | 41:31
I have never understood | 41:35
why it is that the older you get, | 41:37
the faster time seems to go by | 41:40
but it does seem that way, doesn't it? | 41:42
Guy Murchie in his book "The Seven Mysteries of Life" | 41:46
in a section entitled Transcendence, | 41:51
gives a suggestion as to why this may be so. | 41:53
He writes, "Have you ever wondered why each year you live, | 41:57
"seems to pass faster than the year before? | 42:03
"There's a law at work here called transcendence. | 42:08
"Influencing time and space and consciousness of self, | 42:13
"for each year lived | 42:19
"has to be a smaller portion | 42:22
"of one's experience to date. | 42:26
"To the year-old baby, | 42:30
"a year is a lifetime. | 42:32
"To the 10-year-old, | 42:36
"1/10 as much. | 42:39 | |
"To the centenarian, | 42:42
"but 1% of his experience | 42:45
"while people he knows appear, bloom and die | 42:51
"like flowers in a garden. | 42:55
So it is for the one-year-old, | 42:59
a year is all of that one-year-old's life | 43:00
for the 10-year-old, it is 1/10 | 43:03
but for the person who has 100, | 43:05
it is 1/100. | 43:07 | |
So for those of us who are somewhere in between, | 43:09
it is easy to see on reflecting | 43:12
that way that time indeed, does seem to go faster | 43:15
as we get older | 43:20 | |
and so the year we are finishing | 43:21
has gone more quickly for all of us | 43:23
than any other year in our lives | 43:26
because it is a smaller portion | 43:28
of our lives then any other year has ever been. | 43:31
A heavy year for some. | 43:35
A year of joy and sadness. | 43:39
A time of goodness and of grief. | 43:42
Of celebration and heartache. | 43:45
Of work accomplished and of work undone. | 43:49
Of work done well and work done poorly. | 43:52
Of goals realized and of goals never to be realized. | 43:55
And we live with that ambiguity | 44:01
of goals realized and goals never to he realized all | 44:03
all of our lives, don't we? | 44:07
Of loves known | 44:11 | |
and of loves never to know again. | 44:14
Of loves remembered and of loves newly discovered. | 44:17
Of new awarenesses of self, of others, | 44:22
of the world, indeed, of the pain | 44:26
and suffering and risk | 44:28
and danger and threat and insecurity | 44:30
and unknowns and unknowable | 44:33
and fears and possibilities all around us. | 44:35
New awarenesses which we have | 44:39
and we cannot absolutely cannot go back | 44:41
to a former state of naivete or innocence | 44:44
or even ignorance. | 44:48
We know now as we have never known before | 44:50
and we cannot return, | 44:52
this must have been at least part | 44:55
of what Thomas Wilk intended | 44:57
for we can go home again physically | 44:59
but intellectually, mentally, | 45:02
even emotionally, we cannot go home again | 45:04
from new awarenesses that have become ours this year. | 45:07
My prayer is that this has been a good year | 45:14
for you at this place. | 45:18
That you have become more and more the person | 45:20
that you want and God wants you to become. | 45:23
That you have a new sense of wholeness and integrity | 45:27
and authenticity that is real | 45:30
and helpful to you. | 45:33
And that your love for self and for others | 45:36
and for God has become more tender, | 45:38
more true and more genuine. | 45:42
John writes, "I am John, your brother | 45:46
"and in union with Jesus, | 45:49
"I share with you in suffering in his kingdom | 45:51
"and in enduring." | 45:54
Translated I believe that word is applicable | 45:56
and appropriate to each of us | 45:58
for there are those to whom you can say that word. | 46:00
Indeed, you may well be saying it just now | 46:03
to someone or to several someones very special. | 46:06

for I believe that also there are some | 46:27
who would want to say that word to you. | 46:30
They're saying I, | 46:37
Joe, or Anne, | 46:40 | |
I am your brother or your sister | 46:44
and as they reach out to you or to me | 46:47

I want this morning to share with you | 46:53
in your suffering, in his kingdom, | 46:55
and in enduring | 46:58 | |
so that wherever you go, whatever you do, | 47:01
succeed, fail, live, die, | 47:03

hurting or happy, | 47:10
whatever comes your way, | 47:12
there are some this day | 47:13
and in the days to come | 47:14
who will share with you and with me | 47:16
in life and in living. | 47:20
Henri Nouwen in his book "Reaching Out," | 47:24
describes one of the most beautiful experiences | 47:28
between two human beings | 47:31
I think I've ever read about. | 47:32
He says, "There are happy moments of direct knowing, | 47:34
"affirming our hopes | 47:40
"and encouraging us in our search | 47:42
"for that deep solitude | 47:44
"where we can sense an inner unity | 47:47
"and live in union with our fellow human beings | 47:49
"and with God." | 47:52 | |
He then tells about an experience | 47:55
where a former student comes back to visit with him. | 47:57
The student walked into his office | 48:01
and sat down and said, | 48:03
"I have no problems this time." | 48:05
I'm sure a lot of professors | 48:10
would like to hear these words | 48:11
at the beginning of a conversation. | 48:12
He said, "I have no problems this time. | 48:13
"No questions to ask you. | 48:16
"I do not need counsel or advice | 48:18
"but I simply want to celebrate some time with you." | 48:21
And they talked and celebrated time | 48:28
for a long while. | 48:32 | |
And after some deep and obviously real sharing, | 48:34
Nouwen writes of what then happened. | 48:37
The student then said, | 48:41
"It is good to be here." | 48:43
And I said, "Yes, it is good to be together again." | 48:46
And after that he writes, | 48:51
"We were silent again for a long period | 48:53
and as a deep peace filled the empty space | 48:56
between us, he said hesitantly, | 49:00
"When I look at you, | 49:05
it is as if I am in the presence of Christ." | 49:06
I did not feel startled or surprised | 49:12
or in need of protesting, | 49:14
but I could only say back to him, | 49:15
"it is the Christ in you | 49:18
"who recognizes the Christ in me." | 49:20
"Yes," he said, "Christ is indeed in our midst." | 49:23
"And then he spoke the words," Nouwen writes, | 49:28
"which entered my soul as the most healing words | 49:30
"I had heard in many years," | 49:34
the student said to him, | 49:36
"From now on, wherever you go | 49:37
"or wherever I go, | 49:40
"all the ground between us | 49:42
"will be holy ground." | 49:45
There are many today, teacher, professor, | 49:51
roommate, confidante, counselor, listener, | 49:54
sharer, lover, friend, | 49:58
who say to you and to me, | 50:02
"From now on, my brother or sister, | 50:03
"wherever you go and wherever I go, | 50:06
"all the ground between us will be holy ground." | 50:09
The ground is holy as John reminds us | 50:16
because we share it in union with Christ. | 50:18
As Paul tells us, | 50:22 | |
"I am persuaded that neither death | 50:25
"nor life nor angels nor principalities | 50:29
"nor things present nor things to come | 50:31
"nor powers nor height nor depth | 50:34
"nor anything else in all creation | 50:36
"will be able to separate us from the love of God | 50:40
"in Christ Jesus our Lord." | 50:43
Nothing, absolutely nothing ever to separate us | 50:45
from the love of God | 50:49
which we experience in Christ Jesus our Lord | 50:50
and I believe nothing shall ever separate us | 50:52
from those with whom we share life. | 50:56
"I, John, in union with Jesus, | 50:58
"share with you in suffering, | 51:02
"in his kingdom and in enduring." | 51:04
Some contemporary professors of preaching | 51:07
may think that they were the first ones | 51:10
who developed the idea of three points, | 51:12
make a good sermon | 51:14
or three points and a poem as someone has said. | 51:15
But running from beginning to end in John's writing | 51:19
is the fact that he constantly speaks | 51:22
in terms of threes. | 51:25
In the first chapter, he says, | 51:28
"Happy is the one who reads this book, | 51:30
"who listens to the words, | 51:34
"and who obeys these words." | 51:36
And then he writes about Jesus Christ, | 51:39
the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, | 51:43
and the ruler of the kings of the Earth. | 51:47
Or he talks about the Almighty, | 51:50
who was, who is, and who is to come. | 51:52
So he speaks in threes | 51:56
and first, he talks about I share with you in suffering. | 51:58
We do suffer. | 52:04 | |
All of us do. | 52:06 | |
Each of us does. | 52:08 | |
The early Christians did. | 52:11
John knew this. | 52:14 | |
He had suffered. | 52:16 | |
He was persecuted, arrested, imprisoned, exiled. | 52:18
His brothers and sisters in Christ | 52:24
were suffering at the same time as he. | 52:25
He knew this. | 52:29 | |
They were all μάρτυρες (Greek) | 52:31
or martyrs for their faith in Christ. | 52:32
This did not mean that they were all martyrs, | 52:35
that is that they were all killed | 52:37
for their faith and their proclaiming of God's word | 52:39
but they were μάρτυρες (Greek), | 52:42
that is martyrs in that they were suffering, | 52:43
they were witnessing for the lordship of Christ | 52:46
and John knew this. | 52:49
I don't know how it is with you | 52:53
but for me, it is most reassuring, | 52:56
it is extremely crucial, | 53:01
it is absolutely essential | 53:04
and sometimes for me, | 53:06
it is, it has been and is a life-saving experience | 53:08
to know that someone is with me in my suffering. | 53:13
This is why people go to the hospital. | 53:20
This why people go to the home | 53:24
when someone has died. | 53:26
This is why some friend comes | 53:29
to your room | 53:32 | |
when you are broken or in tears | 53:34
or are down. | 53:39 | |
This is why we write notes | 53:42
or send cards or make phone calls. | 53:44
Not that we can make people well, | 53:46
not that we can take away someone else's pain, | 53:50
not that there is anything that we can do | 53:54
but that out of love and genuine concern | 53:59
and with real empathy, | 54:03
we can say I am with you. | 54:04
In your joy, I rejoice. | 54:08
In your sadness, I suffer. | 54:11
"I share with you," John writes, "in his kingdom." | 54:16
The kingdom had already come, | 54:21
the kingdom was already present, | 54:24
the kingdom of Christ of God was and is the rule | 54:27
of God, the reign of God, the presence of God, | 54:30
the love of God. | 54:33 | |
Jesus, indeed, came preaching in the very first sermon. | 54:35
He preached the kingdom of God | 54:37
is at hand, repent and believe the good news. | 54:39
John has shared and is sharing with his fellow Christians | 54:44
in that kingdom. | 54:48 | |
For kingdom, it seems to me, | 54:49
is a sense of presence. | 54:51
"Lo, I will be with you always | 54:52
"even to the end of the age." | 54:55
Kingdom is a sense of obligation. | 54:58
"If you love me," Jesus said, | 55:01
"then keep my commandments." | 55:03
Kingdom is a sense of demand. | 55:06
"For as much as you have not done it | 55:09
"under one of the least | 55:11
"of these, you have not done it unto me | 55:12
"or for as much as you have done it unto one | 55:14
"of the the least | 55:17 | |
"of these, you have done it unto me." | 55:18
Kingdom is a sense of love. | 55:20
See what love the Father has given us | 55:24
that we should be called children of God. | 55:26
Kingdom is a sense of covenant. | 55:32
"I will never leave you," Jesus said, | 55:34
"nor forsake you. | 55:37
"I will come to you | 55:40
"and because I live, you will live also." | 55:43
Kingdom is promise. | 55:48
"Greater works," Jesus said, | 55:51
"than I do, you also will do." | 55:52
And then John, near the end of the book | 55:56
of Revelation writes, | 55:58
"And I saw the holy city coming down out | 55:59
"of Heaven from God. | 56:03
"Now," he says, | 56:05 | |
"God's home is with God's people. | 56:06
"God will live with them and they shall be his people. | 56:09
"God himself will be with them | 56:12
"and he will be their God. | 56:14
"He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. | 56:16
"There will be no more death, | 56:20
"no more grief, no more crying or pain. | 56:22
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, | 56:25
"the beginning and the end." | 56:27
And then he says, | 56:29 | |
"To anyone, | 56:30 | |
"anyone who is thirsty, | 56:33
"I will give a free drink of water | 56:38
"from the spring of the water of life. | 56:42
"To anyone, a free drink of water. | 56:46
"Yes," John says, | 56:52
"I share with you in his kingdom" | 56:53
and then he says, | 56:54 | |
"I share with you in enduring, | 56:56
"in suffering in his kingdom and in enduring." | 56:58
It is not enough to start with someone on a journey. | 57:02
It is not enough just to walk part of the way. | 57:06
It is not enough just to come | 57:11
and go in relating to others. | 57:12
It is not enough to make a commitment | 57:15
and not follow through. | 57:17
The word John gave to his brothers and sisters in Christ, | 57:20
the word that the Lord gives to us, | 57:24
the word that we are to receive | 57:26
and are to live out with others | 57:27
is I share with you in enduring. | 57:29
Those who endure to the end, | 57:34
the same shall be saved. | 57:38
We're all in this business together. | 57:42
If we can live it, share it, | 57:46
endure it with one another | 57:48
and in union with Jesus, | 57:50
then surely God's will and God's way | 57:52
are being fulfilled in us | 57:54
and through us. | 57:57 | |
I believe that we have occasion every day | 58:00
to share in suffering | 58:02
and in the kingdom of God | 58:05
and in enduring. | 58:07 | |
It isn't something that's very special | 58:10
but it is something for every day. | 58:12
And so as we close this academic year, | 58:15
may I invite you, you who are a part | 58:18
of this community in an ongoing way, | 58:20
you who are students | 58:23
and will be leaving either for other places | 58:24

you who are visiting this day, | 58:32
may I invite you this morning | 58:33
to do two things? | 58:36 | |
One, | 58:38 | |
will you allow others the privilege | 58:41
and the joy and the happiness | 58:43
and the satisfaction | 58:45
of coming to your life | 58:48
to share with you in your experiences of suffering | 58:51
of the kingdom of God and of enduring? | 58:55
Will you let somebody else come to you? | 58:59
The second invitation | 59:04
is will you not live your life alone | 59:05
only for yourself, | 59:09
only to receive? | 59:12 | |
But will you, in the name and in the spirit of Christ, | 59:15
and in union with Jesus, | 59:18
reach out to share with others | 59:23
as they experience suffering in the kingdom | 59:26
and as they need someone to help them in enduring? | 59:30
I close with these words. | 59:37
Every human being | 59:43
has a great, yet often unknown gift to care, | 59:46
to be compassionate, | 59:53
to become present to the other, | 59:55
to listen, to hear | 59:58
and to receive. | 1:00:01
If that gift would be set free | 1:00:03
and made available, miracles could take place. | 1:00:05
Those who rarely can receive bread from a stranger | 1:00:09
and smile in gratitude | 1:00:12

Those who can sit in silence with their fellow man | 1:00:18
not knowing what to say | 1:00:20
but knowing that they should be there, | 1:00:21
can bring new life to a dying heart. | 1:00:23
Those who are not afraid to hold a hand in gratitude | 1:00:26
or to shed tears in grief | 1:00:30
or to let a sigh of distress arise straight | 1:00:32
from the heart can break through paralyzing boundaries | 1:00:35
and witness the birth of a new fellowship, | 1:00:38
the fellowship of the broken. | 1:00:41
Why is it that we keep that great gift of care | 1:00:44
so deeply hidden within us? | 1:00:47
Why is it that we keep giving dimes | 1:00:50

Why is it that we do not join the lonely eater | 1:00:57
in the dining hall | 1:01:00

Why is that we so seldom knock on a door | 1:01:06
or grab a phone just to say hello, | 1:01:09
just to show that we have been thinking | 1:01:12
about each other? | 1:01:14
Why are smiles still hard to get | 1:01:16
and words of comfort so difficult to come by? | 1:01:18
Why is it so hard to express thanks to a teacher, | 1:01:22
admiration to a student | 1:01:26
and appreciation to the men and women | 1:01:28
who cook and clean and garden? | 1:01:30

Why is it | 1:01:53 | |
that we pass others by, | 1:01:56
always on the way to something | 1:02:01
or someone more important? | 1:02:06
We need not pass others. | 1:02:14
