The Old Testament lesson is from the 31st chapter | 21:50
of Jeremiah, verses 31 through 34. | 21:53
"'Behold, the days are coming,' says the Lord, | 22:00
"'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel | 22:03
"'and the house of Judah, not like the covenant | 22:07

"'But this is the covenant which I will make | 22:22

"'to the greatest,' says the Lord. | 22:47
"'For I will forgive their iniquity, | 22:51
"'and I will remember their sin no more.'" | 22:53
The Epistle lesson is from the first Letter of Paul | 22:59
to the Corinthians, Chapter 11, verses 23 through 26. | 23:02
"For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, | 23:11
"that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed | 23:15
"took bread, and when he had given thanks | 23:18
"he broke it and said, 'This is my body which is for you. | 23:21
"'Do this in remembrance of me.' | 23:28
"In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, | 23:32
"'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. | 23:37
"'Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. | 23:40
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, | 23:45
"you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." | 23:49

Would you please stand for the reading of the Gospel. | 23:58
The Gospel lesson is from the 13th chapter of John, | 24:07
verses one through 35. | 24:10
"Now, before the feast of the Passover, | 24:15
"when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart | 24:18
"out of this world to the Father, | 24:21
"having loved his own who were in the world | 24:23
"he loved them to the end. | 24:26
"And during supper, when the Devil had already | 24:29
"put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, | 24:32
"to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father | 24:36
"had given all things into his hands, | 24:40
"and that he had come from God and was going to God, | 24:43
"rose from supper, laid aside his garments, | 24:47
"and girded himself with a towel. | 24:50
"Then he poured water into a basin | 24:54
"and began to wash the disciples' feet | 24:56
"and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. | 24:59
"He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to him, | 25:03
"'Lord, do you wash my feet?' | 25:08
"Jesus answered him, 'What I am doing | 25:11
"'you do not know now, but afterward you will understand.' | 25:14
"Peter said to him, 'You shall never wash my feet.' | 25:20
"Jesus answered him, 'If I do not wash you, | 25:24
"'you have no part in me.' | 25:28
"Simon Peter said to him, 'Lord, not my feet only | 25:32
"'but also my hands and my head.' | 25:36
"And Jesus said to him, 'He who has bathed | 25:39

"'But he is clean all over, and you are clean. | 25:46
"'But not every one of you,' | 25:50
"for he knew who was to betray him. | 25:53
"That was why he said, 'You are not all clean.' | 25:55
"When he had washed their feet and taken his garments | 26:01
"and resumed his place, he said to them, | 26:04
"'Do you know what I have done to you? | 26:06
"'You call me teacher and Lord, | 26:10
"'and you are right, for so I am. | 26:12
"'If I, then, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, | 26:16

"'For I have given you an example, that you also should do | 26:25
"'as I have done to you. | 26:29

"'If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. | 26:42
"'I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen. | 26:47
"'It is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, | 26:53
"'"He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me." | 26:55
"'I tell you this now, before it takes place, | 27:00

"'anyone whom I send receives me, and he who receives me | 27:11
"'receives him who sent me.' | 27:16
"When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit | 27:19
"and testified, 'Truly, truly I say to you, | 27:23
"'one of you will betray me.' | 27:27
"The discipled looked at one another, | 27:31
"uncertain of whom he spoke. | 27:33
"One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, | 27:36
"was lying close to the breast of Jesus, | 27:38
"so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, | 27:41
"'Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.' | 27:44
"So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, | 27:47
"he said to him, 'Lord, who is it?' | 27:50
"Jesus answered, 'It is he to whom I shall give | 27:53
"'this morsel when I have dipped it.' | 27:56
"So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, | 27:58
"the son of Simon Iscariot. | 28:02
"Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. | 28:05
"Jesus said to him, 'What you are going to do, do quickly.' | 28:08
"Now, no one at the table knew why he said this to him. | 28:14
"Some thought that because Judas had the money box | 28:17
"Jesus was telling him, 'Buy what we need for the feast,' | 28:20
"or that he should give something to the poor. | 28:23
"So after receiving the morsel, | 28:27
"he immediately went out, and it was night. | 28:28
"When he had gone out, Jesus said, | 28:32
"'Now is the Son of Man glorified, | 28:34
"'and in him God is glorified. | 28:37
"'If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him | 28:40
"'in himself, and glorify him at once. | 28:44
"'Little children, yet a little while I am with you. | 28:49
"'You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, | 28:53
"'so now I say to you: where I am going, you cannot come. | 28:56
"'A new commandment I give to you: | 29:03
"'that you love one another, even as I have loved you, | 29:06
"'that you also love one another. | 29:11
"'By this, all people will know that you are my disciples, | 29:14
"'if you have love for one another.'" | 29:18

Amen. | 29:56 | |
I shall never again approach a service | 30:03
on Maundy Thursday without a vivid memory | 30:06
about an experience of two years ago. | 30:09
I had the privilege of traveling with 24 other | 30:13
United Methodists through the People's Republic of China. | 30:16
We were one of the very first church groups | 30:21
identified as such allowed into that country. | 30:23
We were there to learn about the country and its people | 30:28
in order that we could be resource persons | 30:32
to United Methodists in this country as they undertook | 30:34
a mission study of that land and its way of life. | 30:37
We arrived in Peking, or Beijing as we are now | 30:44
supposed to call it, on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. | 30:48
Before leaving New York, we had agreed | 30:54
to hold services during Holy Week, wherever we were. | 30:56
Palm Sunday was celebrated at noon | 31:02
in Peking in the Peking Hotel, | 31:05
in one of the spacious guest rooms. | 31:09
From the time we had deplaned at the airport in Peking, | 31:14
we had been met with billboards and notices | 31:18
on bulletin boards and slogans on the lips | 31:20
of our Chinese guides which all said, "Serve the People!" | 31:23
That was a slogan which Chairman Mao Zedong had espoused | 31:31
and which people seemed determined at that time to follow. | 31:34
And it showed, in people's faces, | 31:38
in their appearance, in their politeness. | 31:42
People seemed to be well-fed, clothed, healthy, | 31:46
and they cared for one another. | 31:51
And they were certainly gracious to their guests. | 31:54
Granted, "people" was a euphemism for "state," | 31:58
but the people seemed to be the real beneficiaries. | 32:02
And it was easy to make the transference | 32:07
from people to state and back to people again. | 32:09
Thursday evening, Maundy Thursday, we were in Yangchow | 32:16
in what had once been a British guest house, | 32:22
now run by the Chinese government for tourists. | 32:24
We had requested of our Chinese hosts a room for a service, | 32:29
a basin of water and towels, and communion elements. | 32:34
Having spent five days with the slogan, "Serve the People," | 32:40
it seemed very fitting to us | 32:45
that our Maundy Thursday service be a foot-washing service, | 32:46
and that our text for the evening | 32:51
be the Gospel passage which I just read to you. | 32:52
By the time we returned to the guest house around 10:30 p.m. | 32:58
after having spent a full day which began at the Sun Yat Sen | 33:03
Memorial in Nanking, traveling 70 to 80 miles | 33:07
by a very slow bus from Nanking, visiting a commune, | 33:12
and attending a Chinese movie, we were all | 33:17
ready for hot showers and bed. | 33:20
But it was Maundy Thursday, and we had pledged | 33:25
about a hundred years before in New York | 33:29
that we would have a service, and our Chinese hosts | 33:31
had made preparations for us. | 33:35
So, weary travelers that we were, we gathered | 33:39
in the conference room at the guest house | 33:43
for our Maundy Thursday service, | 33:45
foot-washing and the celebration of the Lord's Supper. | 33:48
Our responsible hosts had served the people, | 33:55
their guests, well. | 33:59
For there were trays of steaming hot towels | 34:02
and a basin of soothing warm water, | 34:05
and soft, soft towels to dry feet. | 34:08
And there was a loaf of bread, | 34:12
and there was a bottle of wine. | 34:14
And our hosts remained around the room, | 34:18
not accepting our invitation to join us, | 34:21
but watching to see what this church group, | 34:24
also known as the Blue Team, was up to now. | 34:27
Prayers were said, the Scripture was read, | 34:33
and we knelt there in that room in that strange land, | 34:38
far from home, remembering the services | 34:41
that would be going on in our home churches, | 34:45
missing our loved ones, and we washed | 34:49
one another's tired and dusty feet. | 34:53
And the meaning of that Scripture passage came alive, | 34:58
taught to us by a people, most of whom had never heard | 35:02
the passage read, did not know who Jesus was, | 35:07
did not know what we were up to, | 35:11
but who understood and recited and kept ever before them | 35:14
the slogan "Serve the People." | 35:18
Many of us had never participated in a foot-washing service | 35:25
before, and initially we felt strange and awkward and shy, | 35:28
perhaps not unlike Peter, at having our feet washed | 35:34
by someone else in our group. | 35:38
It was much easier to do the washing than to have it done; | 35:42
that is, until one thought about the passage | 35:48
that had been read. | 35:51
For here was Jesus, who according to this Gospel account | 35:54
knew his hour had come, | 35:59
that all of this was to be over soon for him, | 36:01
that the hour of glory would be his. | 36:07
Such knowledge might have filled him with pride, | 36:12
but instead he washed his disciples' feet. | 36:16
Knowing that he was Lord of all, | 36:22
that he was King of Kings, he washed feet. | 36:25
We probably would have had contempt for human beings | 36:31
and the things of this world, like dirty feet, | 36:34
but he assumed the office of a slave | 36:38
to bring comfort to those to whom he was also host. | 36:41
Knowing that betrayal was close at hand, | 36:48
we would probably have been bitter and filled with hate, | 36:51
but Jesus met the approaching injury | 36:56
and disloyalty and death with humility and love. | 36:58
To assume the role of washing another's feet meant for us, | 37:06
as we experienced it in Yangchow, assuming and committing | 37:11
ourselves to a live of serving the people; | 37:16
one another, the Chinese, the folks at home, | 37:20
and all those in between. | 37:26
As we assumed Peter's role and reflected on it, | 37:31
allowing our feet to be washed meant also | 37:35
the same commitment, for in accepting that act, | 37:38
we were opening ourselves to new understandings of service, | 37:42
to new possibilities for life, | 37:47
to risks and to hope. | 37:50
But the service did not end there. | 37:54
The account continued; it foretold the betrayal; | 37:57
Jesus offered bread to Judas and urged him | 38:02
to do quickly what he was going to do. | 38:05
And there in that room where the revolutionary committee | 38:09
for that guest house met, we served one another | 38:12
the Lord's Supper, knowing that even as we offered | 38:16
and as we received, | 38:21
we too would be betrayers and deniers; | 38:24
for we would not want to serve | 38:28
nor would we want to have our feet washed; | 38:31
for we would not want to love one another | 38:35
nor would we want to accept the love that God offered. | 38:39
We heard the new commandment to love, | 38:46
but it was not until Easter Monday in Shanghai | 38:49
that an understanding of that new commandment came | 38:52
and that a real awareness of our responsibility was born, | 38:55
or that the meaning of our hope was made alive. | 38:59
For on that Monday we were told, after a long conference | 39:04
among our Chinese guides, that they all wanted | 39:07
to ride on our bus and not with the Red Team. | 39:11
The Red Team was a group of American shoppers | 39:16
who were traveling the same route as were we, | 39:19
who had been rather disparaging to some of the ethnic | 39:22
members of our group, and who had labeled us | 39:24
religious fanatics after the foot-washing service. | 39:27
But the Chinese guides wanted to ride on our bus | 39:33
because we, being a church group, were different; | 39:36
we cared about the Chinese people | 39:41
and we cared about one another. | 39:44
And we thanked God, that God's voice was spoken to us | 39:48
through a people who claimed to have no knowledge | 39:52
or need of a god; and that perhaps that voice | 39:55
had been heard echoing back through us | 39:59
to those who had spoken it to us. | 40:01
On the table here before you are a towel and a basin, | 40:07
symbols of love, humility and service, | 40:13
that remind us of the parable lived by our Lord | 40:18
and which parable we are called to actualize. | 40:23
Also to be placed on the table are bread and wine | 40:30
of which we will eat and drink. | 40:34
As we do so, | 40:37 | |
let us keep in mind that by accepting them, | 40:40
we are committing ourselves once again | 40:44
to a life of love and service, | 40:47
