When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, | 27:08
Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? | 27:11
And he said to him, feed my lambs. | 27:17

Jesus Christ, amen. | 33:29
I imagine Peter must have been a very troubled | 33:40
and very concerned person when confronted by three questions | 33:45
by our Lord. | 33:51 | |
It is not strange to be asked if you love someone. | 33:57
Mates do it everyday. | 34:04
Children do it of their parents, | 34:09
parents do it of their children. | 34:10
The reality of the question and the kind questioning | 34:14
stands firm in our mind all the time. | 34:17
We want to know that we are loved | 34:20
and we want to know how we are loved | 34:22
and what that love means for us. | 34:25
But to be questioned three times in practically | 34:30
identical methods must trouble the depths of one's heart. | 34:36
One day when I walked into the kitchen of my home | 34:49
and saw the drippings from cookies on the countertop | 34:54
and looking up on my son's face, | 35:01
found leavings of cookie crumbs around his mouth | 35:04
and noticing quickly that the lid was off the cookie jar, | 35:09
I asked my son, have you been into the cookies? | 35:15
It's that kind of question that one already knows | 35:24
the answer to that gets us into trouble most of the time. | 35:28
I knew sufficient evidence existed | 35:33
that someone had been in the cookie jar. | 35:35
Enough evidence was left on the mouth to know which one | 35:38
of the someones had been in it. | 35:41
But it's that kind of question that was being asked. | 35:46
Not a question for information, for enough information had | 35:50
already been collected, but a question of responsibility. | 35:54
Are you willing to admit, are you willing to | 35:58
own up to your behavior? | 36:01
Are you willing to say, yes, I have been in the cookie jar? | 36:03
I imagine it was a question of responsibility | 36:11
that Jesus was asking Peter that day. | 36:13
Do you love me? | 36:20 | |
I am not interested in your saying that you love me. | 36:23
I'm more interested in what you do that demonstrates | 36:25
that you love me. | 36:27 | |
If you love me, will you feed my sheep? | 36:29
If you love me, feed my sheep. | 36:34
Now there are those among us who become theologians | 36:39
at this point when we've been directed clearly by anyone | 36:42
to do what we're supposed to do, we become theologians | 36:47
and we begin to ask, what does it mean to love? | 36:50
Who are the sheep? | 36:52
How do I find them? | 36:54
Where are they located? | 36:55
What manner shall I go about doing it? | 36:56
And I imagine that's why Jesus didn't spend an awful lot | 37:00
of time in explanations but rather | 37:02
redirected the question again. | 37:04
If you love me, here, tend my sheep. | 37:08
Maybe we should become theologians for a moment | 37:16
and ask the question. | 37:18
When Jesus was asked, what is the most important of the | 37:20
commandments he responded, we should love God, | 37:24
we should love others and we should love ourselves. | 37:29
So becoming a theologian at that point is not problematical | 37:36
but rather instructional. | 37:39
Volumes have been written about what it means to love God. | 37:43
And there are those who spend 24 hours a day in praise | 37:47
and prayer, who've separated themselves from the rest | 37:51
of the world and worldly responsibilities in order to give | 37:54
constant attention to their love for God | 37:56
and they pray constantly and consistently. | 37:59
They pray not only for themselves but they pray for us. | 38:03
They pray for the whole world. | 38:07
And they constantly remind us that one can | 38:10
continually be in prayer. | 38:12
Preachers preach everyday about loving God | 38:19
and I imagine those who would not really want to be bothered | 38:24
with other people are really bothered with themselves | 38:29
to find this kind of praise and admiration for God | 38:32
self-satisfactory and sustaining for their lives. | 38:36
And then when we really want to be hard on one another | 38:44
we admonish one another to love others. | 38:48
We know how difficult it is to love other people. | 38:52
They come in such different shapes and forms | 38:54
and attitudes and altitudes. | 38:57
Some have so much money, some have so little. | 39:01
Some have so much class, some have so little. | 39:04
Some have so much couth, some have none. | 39:08
And we discover that if we ever really wanna get down | 39:13
on someone and we know that they're a part of the faith | 39:16
in any kind of expressive way, we can ask them this | 39:19
challenging question, how have you loved others? | 39:22
Show your demonstration, love for others | 39:24
and it becomes almost the way to put another person down | 39:27
to ask them to test how they're loving others. | 39:31
We could challenge people to visit the prisons | 39:37
and to visit in hospitals and to visit the sick | 39:39
and the orphans and the homeless. | 39:42
To visit those whom society has dealt an unfair blow. | 39:44
We can show all kinds of ways for loving others | 39:49
and we know what it means to be | 39:52
in some kind of meaningful relationship. | 39:55
I think the real clinker in Jesus' response to us | 40:01
to love ourselves is that we have taught | 40:05
and been taught for so long that we must not do that. | 40:08
To love ourselves may be to take ourselves more seriously | 40:15
than we have before. | 40:18
To take more seriously what it means to be a whole person. | 40:19
To realize that the whole gift of God's life to us | 40:24
is not a privilege but a responsibility, an opportunity, | 40:28
yes, to live in abundance and to have life abundantly | 40:31
and to show others how to do that. | 40:35
But in order to be in that kind of lifestyle | 40:38
we must take ourselves seriously enough | 40:41
to care for ourselves. | 40:43
Let's look for a moment. | 40:47
Whoever heard a preacher requesting someone | 40:48
to love themselves? | 40:50
When you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror | 40:53
do you really like what you see? | 40:54
I've really been excited about our society, | 41:00
how much money is spent on changing the way we look. | 41:04
How much energy is put into changing | 41:08
just our physical features. | 41:11
And you can probably spend the rest of your life | 41:14
and the rest of the money you can acquire making those kinds | 41:18
of changes but I assure you that what I'm talking about | 41:21
is seeing the inside person, the one that can only be | 41:25
expressed through who you are and how you act. | 41:28
Do you love that person? | 41:31
And if you grasp the love for that person than you begin | 41:33
to understand a little bit about what Jesus must have meant | 41:37
when he said, love others, and maybe a little bit of why | 41:40
it's exciting to love God who created us and made us. | 41:44
The question that was being asked was, if you love me, | 41:53
make it possible for my sheep to have food and drink. | 41:58
If you love me, make it possible for those who are put away | 42:04
in prisons to discover that freedom really means | 42:07
handling one's life responsibly, that society has proper | 42:11
demands to be placed upon us and we need not always | 42:14
break the laws placed before us. | 42:17
We could reduce the need for prisons. | 42:21
We could reduce the need for the corrective in our society. | 42:22
Loving means not showing power but learning how to empower. | 42:27
If someone asks me today, what do I think is the most | 42:35

it is that somehow it has become difficult for us | 42:42
who have power and who wield power so easily | 42:47

Republican party platform, not including ERA, | 43:05

regardless of our sexual identity, has a proper place | 43:30

the full expression of their being. | 43:37
Methods to obtain it, methods to reach it | 43:44
must not be confused with the reality itself. | 43:47
There would be no need for a constitutional amendment | 43:53
if the society responded to people as they had been created | 43:55
without placing blocks in their way. | 44:00
Maybe we should erect somewhere | 44:08
on the west coast of our country a new statue. | 44:10
We talk about the Statue of Liberty bringing people in | 44:13
and being with open arms and handling all the kinds of | 44:16
responsibilities given when people are oppressed | 44:19
and put upon by governments. | 44:22
Maybe we need to erect another statue, | 44:25
the statue of responsibility where people could know | 44:27
that it is all of our responsibility to make life possible | 44:30
for others, that we cannot live in our world alone. | 44:33
You see, we generally have enough information | 44:40
to live our lives. | 44:43
And just as I'm certain that Jesus had enough information | 44:46
regarding Peter, he wanted him to accept the responsibility. | 44:49
And so the question was asked again and again. | 44:56
Many times when we know the answer | 45:02
and we don't like the answer we ask the question. | 45:04
And Peter was no different. | 45:06
Peter looked at John and said, all right Lord, | 45:09
you got me straight, what about him? | 45:11
How many times when, at our labor, we know the right thing | 45:17
to do and we know what is responsible in our lives | 45:22
but rather than doing that we check our our neighbor. | 45:26
We look them and we say, they're not doing it, | 45:29
why should I? | 45:32 | |
How many times when everybody around us is cheating | 45:35
on their income tax and not telling the truth about how much | 45:38
they gave to church and other places, we look and say, | 45:41
we don't have to follow the rules because no one else is. | 45:46
I imagine that must have flashed rapidly through his mind | 45:50
and he said, what about John? | 45:53
Jesus responded, no matter what happens to him, | 46:00
you take responsibility for your life and you follow me. | 46:06
Jesus has a strange way of challenging us to deal with | 46:16
the future without knowing it. | 46:20
That we can stand easy knowing that God, the Creator, | 46:23
a sustain, redeemer God, provides for us all that is | 46:28
necessary for our continued good existence | 46:32
and that we face the future knowing that | 46:35
that Creator God still is in control of our world | 46:38
and if we would allow that power to become our power | 46:42
we can change the world too. | 46:46
He didn't respond to what would happen to his | 46:51
beloved disciple, John, but rather says it doesn't make | 46:55
any difference to you what happens to him. | 46:59
I want you to do something specific. | 47:02
Follow me. | 47:06 | |
That question then comes down to eternity to us. | 47:10

and all over the world, even though corporately | 47:27

to declare their support for Christian nurture | 53:03
for these children. | 53:06
And please, when it is time for that, | 53:08
make that declaration as the people of God. | 53:11
That they be brought up in the Christian faith. | 55:14
And that they be taught the Holy Scriptures. | 55:17

upon private and public worship to God. | 55:23
And do you endeavor to keep these children | 55:26
under the ministry and guidance of the church until they, | 55:30
by the power of God, to accept for themselves | 55:34
the gift of salvation? | 55:37
