Lord God, in a wonderful sacrament, | 13:51
you have left us a memorial of your suffering and death. | 13:54
May the sacrament of your body and blood so work in us | 13:58
that the way we live will proclaim the redemption | 14:02
you have brought. | 14:05
For you live and reign with the father and the holy spirit, | 14:07
one God, now and forever. | 14:11
Will you join me in the callout? | 14:16
And this is the judgment, | 14:19
that the light has come into the world, | 14:21
and the people love darkness rather than light. | 14:24
God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all. | 14:28
For God sent the son into the world, | 14:34
not to condemn the world, | 14:37
but that the world might be saved through him. | 14:39
Everyone who does evil hates the light, | 14:43
and does not come to the light. | 14:47
Come, let us worship in spirit and in truth. | 14:50
Oh God, you who didst command the light | 15:00
to shine out of the darkness, shine into our hearts, | 15:03
to give the light of the knowledge of your glory | 15:07
in the face of Jesus Christ, amen. | 15:10
Will you please stand for the reading of the gospel? | 15:16
The gospel lesson is taken from the Book of John, | 15:23
the 15th chapter, the 12th verse. | 15:25
This is my commandment, that you love one another, | 15:30
even as I have loved you. | 15:36
- | Michael Coist writes, | 15:51 |
"Every Christian is born | 15:54
"in order to reveal love." | 15:57
Jesus says, "A new commandment I give to you, | 16:03
"that you love one another, even as I have loved you, | 16:09
"that you love one another." | 16:13
But this new commandment, | 16:17
as is true of many of the teachings of Jesus, | 16:19
is based on an old commandment | 16:21
found in Leviticus 19:18, which reads, | 16:24
"you shall love your neighbor as yourself." | 16:29
The new is based on the old, | 16:35
but is radically different from the old. | 16:38
The old said, "love your neighbor as yourself." | 16:42
The new says, "love one another, | 16:46
"not as you love yourself, but as I have loved you." | 16:50
Love one another, love our neighbor, | 16:56
love each other, love somebody close to you, | 16:59
love other people, love even your enemies, | 17:02
as Christ loves us. | 17:07
Not as you love yourself, | 17:10
but as God in Christ has loved us. | 17:14
Without condemnation of any person, | 17:18
without partiality shown among any of the children of God, | 17:22
without condescension or arrogance toward others, | 17:27
without fear of being accused of loving the unacceptable, | 17:32
the unlovable, the untouchable. | 17:37
The new commandment is that we love others | 17:40
as God in Christ loves us, with compassion, | 17:42
with kindness, with tenderness, | 17:47
with gentleness, with understanding. | 17:50
We live on this particular Maundy Thursday | 17:55
in the aftermath of one of the greatest technological | 17:58
scientific engineering feats in history, | 18:01
the safe journey of the space vehicle Columbia. | 18:06
All of the to-do about this reminds me | 18:10
of some lines of de Chardin. | 18:13
Someday, de Chardin writes, | 18:16
someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, | 18:19
the tides, and the gravity, | 18:22
we shall harness for God the energies of love, | 18:25
and then, for the second time in the history of the world, | 18:30
we will have harnessed fire. | 18:35
The energies. | 18:41 | |
A love that is total, that is self-giving, | 19:02
that is sensitive of and to others, | 19:04
a love that invites and attracts, | 19:07
but does not require or demand. | 19:12
A love that can be felt and can be given, | 19:16
even in the face of human failure and disappointment. | 19:18
Love like the love that Jesus had for the woman at the well, | 19:23
though he knew that she had had five different husbands. | 19:27
The love Jesus had for the woman on the beach, | 19:32
though he knew that she may well be an adulteress. | 19:35
The love that Jesus had for Peter, though surely he knew | 19:39
that Peter would forsake him and deny him. | 19:42
The love that Jesus had for Judas, | 19:44
even though he knew that Judas would betray him | 19:46
in the most despicable ways, with a kiss. | 19:49
"This is the new commandment," Jesus says, | 19:54
"that you love one another, even as I have loved you." | 19:57
Perhaps as much as anyone who ever lived, | 20:03
Paul knew the love with which Jesus loved him. | 20:06
Perhaps because he knew the love with which Jesus loved him, | 20:11
he could write: | 20:15 | |
"love bears all things, | 20:18
"believes all things, hopes all things, | 20:22
"endures all things. | 20:27
"Love never fails." | 20:30
The love with which Christ loves us | 20:35
is just that love. | 20:40
The love with which we are to love others, | 20:43
the new commandment, is to be no less. | 20:46
Amen. | 20:52 | |
- | Will you join me by standing | 21:03 |
to repeat the affirmation of faith? | 21:05
(shuffling) | 21:07 | |
Let us unite in this historic confession | 21:14
of the Christian faith. | 21:17
I believe in one god, the father almighty, | 21:19
maker of Heaven and Earth, | 21:23
and of all things visible and invisible, | 21:25
and in one lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, | 21:29
begotten of the father before all worlds, | 21:34
God of God, light of light, very God of very God, | 21:37
begotten, not made, being of one substance with the father, | 21:43
through whom all things were made, | 21:48
who for us men and our salvation came down from Heaven, | 21:50
and was incarnate by the holy ghost of the virgin Mary, | 21:55
and was made man, and was crucified, also for us, | 22:00
under Pontius Pilate. | 22:04
He suffered and was buried, and the third day, | 22:06
he rose again, according to the scriptures, | 22:09
and ascended into Heaven, | 22:12
and sitteth on the right hand of the father, | 22:13
and he shall come again with glory, | 22:16
to judge both the quick and the dead, | 22:19
whose kingdom shall have no end. | 22:21
And I believe in the holy ghost, | 22:24
the lord, the giver of life, | 22:27
who proceedeth from the father and the son, | 22:29
who with the father and the son together | 22:32
is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. | 22:34
And I believe in one holy Catholic and apostolic church. | 22:39
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, | 22:43
and I look for the resurrection of the dead, | 22:47
and the life of the world to come, amen. | 22:50
Be seated. | 22:54 | |
Let us pray. | 23:01 | |
God of grace, you have come to us in our savior, Christ, | 23:04
but we have reviled him, denied him, | 23:09
even betrayed him with a kiss. | 23:13
We have not faithfully followed his commandment | 23:16
to love one another as he has loved us. | 23:19
Have mercy upon us. | 23:23
Through the signs of bread and wine, | 23:25
reveal your love, which is constant | 23:28
in the face of our infidelity, | 23:31
and restore us by the power of your holy spirit, | 23:33
through Jesus Christ, our lord, amen. | 23:37
In this is divine love revealed. | 23:43
Not that we loved God, but that God has loved us, | 23:46
and has come in Jesus Christ | 23:51
to bring about true reconciliation. | 23:52
By the power of the cross and the resurrection, | 23:56
we are forgiven, amen. | 23:59
Our father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. | 24:05
Thy kingdom come, they will be done, | 24:10
on Earth as it is in Heaven. | 24:14
Give us this day our daily bread, | 24:17
and forgive us our trespasses, | 24:19
as we forgive those who trespass against us. | 24:22
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, | 24:26
for thine is the kingdom, and the power, | 24:31
and the glory forever, amen. | 24:33
Christ, our lord, invites to his table all who love him, | 25:18
and who desire to live in peace with one another. | 25:23
The peace of the lord is with you always. | 25:26
- | And also with you. | 25:30 |
- | Almighty God, our heavenly father, | 25:34 |
who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only son, | 25:37
Jesus Christ, to suffer death upon the cross | 25:40
for our redemption, | 25:44
who made there by the one offering of himself a full, | 25:46
perfect, and sufficient sacrifice | 25:50
for the sins of the whole world, | 25:53
and did institute, and in his holy gospel, command us | 25:55
to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death | 26:00
until his coming again. | 26:04
Hear us, oh merciful father, we most humbly beseech thee, | 26:07
and grant that we receiving these, | 26:12
thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy son, | 26:15
our savior, Jesus Christ, holy institution, | 26:20
in remembrance of his passion, death, and resurrection, | 26:24
may be partakers of the divine nature through him, | 26:29
who in the same night that he was betrayed took bread, | 26:34
and when he had given thanks, he broke it, | 26:40
and gave it to his disciples, saying, | 26:46
"Take, eat, for this is my body, which is given for you. | 26:49
"Do this in remembrance of me." | 26:54
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup, | 26:58
and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, | 27:02
"Drink ye all of this, for this is the blood | 27:07
"of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, | 27:11
"for the forgiveness of sins. | 27:16
"Do this as oft as you shall drink it in remembrance of me." | 27:18
Amen. | 27:24 | |
- | Amen. | |
- | The body of Christ given for you. | 27:34 |
(solemn organ music) | 27:39
The blood of Christ given for you. | 27:44
- | The blood of Christ given for you. | 28:03 |
(coughing) | 28:14 | |
The blood of Christ given for you. | 28:24
(coughing) | 28:31 | |
- | Our lord Jesus said, "A new commandment I give to you, | 33:10 |
"that you love one another, even as I have loved you. | 33:15
"And by this shall all people know | 33:20
"that you are my disciples, | 33:22
"that you love one another." | 33:25
Arise, dear friends, and go in peace. | 33:29
May the love of Christ be with you | 33:33
as you share this love with others. | 33:36
Amen. | 33:39 | |
(coughing) | 34:09 | |
(indistinct muttering) | 34:31
Our lord Jesus said, | 39:57
"I am the vine, you are the branches. | 40:00
"By their fruits, you shall know them." | 40:05
Arise, dear friends in Christ, | 40:10
and may the love of Christ, | 40:14
which has now been shared with you | 40:15
through his body and his blood, | 40:16
be shared with you to others, | 40:19
so that surely others might know that you belong to him. | 40:23
Go in peace, and may the peace of God be with you. | 40:30
Amen. | 40:35 | |
(coughing) | 40:59 | |
John writes about our lord. | 47:03
For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, | 47:07
that whoever believes in him should not perish, | 47:12
but have everlasting life. | 47:14
For God sent this son into the world | 47:17
not to condemn the world, | 47:19
but that the world through him might be saved. | 47:22
Arise, dear friends in Christ, | 47:26
and may that love which has come from God in Christ | 47:29
dwell in your hearts and lives from this night forth, | 47:33
and forevermore. | 47:36
Amen. | 47:39 | |
(clearing throat) | 47:55
Y'all may want. | 48:11 | |
- | Just cover that bread and put it on top | 48:12 |
of that other tray. | 48:14
Maybe disappear it. | 48:22
(coughing) | 48:45 | |
- | Having received those very symbols | 49:12 |
of our lord's body and blood, even bread and wine, | 49:15
let us now offer to God a prayer of thanksgiving. | 49:20
Let us pray. | 49:23 | |
Oh Lord, our blessed God, we, thy humble servants, | 49:25
desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this, | 49:27
our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, | 49:32
most humbly beseeching thee to grant | 49:35
that by the merits and death of thy son Jesus Christ, | 49:37
and through faith in his blood, | 49:41
we and thy whole church may obtain forgiveness of our sins, | 49:44
and all other benefits of his passion. | 49:48
In here, oh Lord, we offer and present unto thee ourselves, | 49:51
our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, | 49:56
and lively sacrifice unto thee, | 50:00
humbly beseeching thee that all we who are partakers | 50:02
of this holy communion may be filled | 50:05
with thy grace and heavenly benediction. | 50:08
And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, | 50:11
to offer unto thee any sacrifice, | 50:15
yet we beseech thee to accept this, | 50:18
our bound and duty and service, not weighing our merits, | 50:20
but pardoning our offenses. | 50:24
Through Jesus Christ, our lord, by whom and with whom, | 50:27
in the unity of the holy spirit, | 50:31
all honor and glory be unto thee, | 50:33
oh Lord God almighty, world without end. | 50:36
Amen. | 50:41 | |
(coughing) | 50:48 | |
- | Will you please stand for the reading of the gospel? | 50:52 |
And when they had sung a hymn, | 51:01
they went out to the mount of olives. | 51:04
(uplifting organ music) | 51:08
(choir singing in unison) | 51:32
Please be seated. | 53:54
The lesson from the Old Testament | 54:01
is taken from the Book of Psalms, psalm 110, | 54:03
the first five verses. | 54:07
Hold not thy praise, oh God of my praise, | 54:11
for the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful | 54:15
are opened against me. | 54:18
They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. | 54:21
They compassed me about also with words of hatred, | 54:25
and fought against me without a cause. | 54:28
For my love, they are adversaries, | 54:32
but I give myself unto prayer, | 54:36
and they have rewarded me evil for good, | 54:40
and hatred for my love. | 54:44
- | And they went to a place which was called Gethsemane, | 55:00 |
and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." | 55:05
And he took with him Peter and James and John, | 55:11
and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. | 55:14
And he said to them, | 55:18
"My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. | 55:19
"Remain here and watch." | 55:23
And going a little farther, he fell on the ground | 55:26
and prayed that if it were possible, | 55:29
the hour might pass from him. | 55:33
And he said, "Father, all things are possible to thee. | 55:36
"Remove this cup from me, yet not what I will, | 55:42
"but what thou wilt." | 55:46
And he came and found them sleeping, | 55:49
and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? | 55:52
"Could you not watch one hour? | 55:56
"Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. | 55:58
"The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." | 56:01
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words, | 56:06
and again he came and found them sleeping, | 56:11
for their eyes were very heavy, | 56:14
and they did not know what to answer him. | 56:16
And he came the third time, and said to them, | 56:20
"Are you still sleeping, and taking your rest? | 56:23
"It is enough, the hour has come. | 56:27
"The son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. | 56:31
"Rise, let us be going, see, my betrayer is at hand." | 56:34
(choir singing in unison) | 56:43
- | And immediately, while he was still speaking, | 57:50 |
Judas came, one of the 12, | 57:55
and with him a crowd with swords and clubs | 57:59
from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. | 58:02
Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, | 58:08
"The one I shall kiss is the man. | 58:12
"Seize him and lead him away under guard." | 58:16
And when he came, he went up to him at once, and said, | 58:20
"Master," and he kissed him. | 58:25
And they laid hands on him and seized him. | 58:30
But one of those who stood by drew his sword | 58:35
and struck the slave of the high priest, | 58:38
and cut off his ear. | 58:40
And Jesus said to them, | 58:43
"Have you come out, as against a robber, | 58:46
"with swords and clubs to capture me? | 58:50
"Day after day, I was with you in the temple, teaching, | 58:54
"and you did not seize me. | 58:59
"But let the scriptures be fulfilled." | 59:03
And they all forsook him, and fled. | 59:07
(dramatic organ music) | 59:12
(choir singing in unison) | 59:25
- | And they led Jesus to the high priest, | 1:01:45 |
and all the chief priests and the elders | 1:01:48
and the scribes were assembled. | 1:01:50
And Peter had followed him at a distance, | 1:01:53
right into the courtyard of the high priest, | 1:01:55
and he was sitting with the guards, | 1:01:58
and warming himself at the fire. | 1:02:00
Now the chief priest and the whole council sought testimony | 1:02:03
against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none, | 1:02:07
for many bore false witness against him, | 1:02:12
and their witness did not agree. | 1:02:15
And some stood up and bore false witness against him, | 1:02:17
saying, "We heard him say, I will destroy this temple | 1:02:21
"that is made with hands, and in three days, | 1:02:25
"I will build another not made with hands." | 1:02:27
And yet not, even so, did their testimony agree. | 1:02:31
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, | 1:02:35
"Have you no answer to make? | 1:02:39
"What is it that these men testify against you?" | 1:02:42
But he was silent, and made no answer. | 1:02:46
Again the high priest asked him, | 1:02:50
"Are you the Christ, the son of the blessed?" | 1:02:52
And Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the son of man | 1:02:57
"seated at the right hand of power, | 1:03:02
"and coming with the clouds of Heaven." | 1:03:04
And the high priest tore his garments, and said, | 1:03:07
"Why do we still need witnesses? | 1:03:10
"You have heard his blasphemy. | 1:03:12
"What is your decision?" | 1:03:15
And they all condemned him as deserving death. | 1:03:17
And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, | 1:03:21
and to strike him, saying to him, "Prophesy!" | 1:03:24
And the guards received him with blows. | 1:03:29
(choir singing in unison) | 1:03:41
- | And as Peter was below in the courtyard, | 1:06:22 |
one of the maids of the high priest came. | 1:06:25
And seeing Peter warming himself, | 1:06:29
she looked at him and said, | 1:06:31
"You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus." | 1:06:32
But he denied it, saying, | 1:06:37
"I neither know nor understand what you mean." | 1:06:39
And he went out into the gateway, and the maid saw him, | 1:06:44
and began again to say to the bystanders, | 1:06:48
"This man is one of them." | 1:06:51
But again he denied it. | 1:06:55
And after a little while, again the bystander said to Peter, | 1:06:57
"Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." | 1:07:01
But he began to invoke a curse on himself, and to swear, | 1:07:09
"I do not know this man of whom you speak." | 1:07:12
And immediately the cock crowed a second time, | 1:07:16
and Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, | 1:07:20
"Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times." | 1:07:24
And he broke down and wept. | 1:07:31

- | Now at the feast, the governor was accustomed | 1:08:55 |
to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. | 1:08:58
And they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. | 1:09:03
So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, | 1:09:09
"Who do you want me to release for you, | 1:09:12
"Barabbas or Jesus, who is called Christ?" | 1:09:14
For he knew that it was out of envy | 1:09:19
that they had delivered him up. | 1:09:22
Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, | 1:09:24
his wife sent word to him. | 1:09:29
"Have nothing to do with that righteous man, | 1:09:32
"for I have suffered much over him today in a dream." | 1:09:35
Now the chief priest and the elders persuaded the people | 1:09:41
to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. | 1:09:46
The governor again said to them, | 1:09:50
"Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" | 1:09:54
And they said, "Barabbas." | 1:09:59
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus, | 1:10:03
"who is called Christ?" | 1:10:09
They said, "Let him be crucified." | 1:10:11
And he said, "Why? | 1:10:15
"What evil has he done?" | 1:10:18
But they shouted all the more, "Let him be crucified." | 1:10:20
So when Pilate saw that he was going, | 1:10:26
gaining nothing, | 1:10:31
but rather that a riot was beginning, | 1:10:35
he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, | 1:10:38
"I am innocent of this man's blood, see to it yourselves." | 1:10:44
(choir singing in unison) | 1:10:57
- | And the soldiers led him away inside the palace, | 1:12:27 |
that is the praetorium, | 1:12:31
and they called together the whole battalion. | 1:12:33
And they clothed him in purple cloak, | 1:12:36
and platting a crown of thorns, they put it on him. | 1:12:39
And they began to salute him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" | 1:12:43
And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, | 1:12:47
and they knelt down in homage to him. | 1:12:53
And when they had mocked him, | 1:12:57
they stripped him of the purple cloak, | 1:12:59
and put his own clothes on him, | 1:13:02
and they let him out to crucify him. | 1:13:06
(dramatic organ music) | 1:13:12
(choir singing in unison) | 1:13:14 |
