for the reading of the Gospel lesson? | 37:56
The Gospel lesson is from Matthew 6:25-34. | 38:02
Therefore I tell you, | 38:08
do not be anxious about your life. | 38:10
What you shall eat or what you shall drink, | 38:12
nor about your body, what you shall put on. | 38:13
Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? | 38:19
Look at the birds in the air. | 38:23
They neither sow, nor weep, nor gather into their barns | 38:24
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. | 38:28
Are you not of more value than they? | 38:31
And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit | 38:34
to his span of life. | 38:37
And why are you anxious about clothing? | 38:39
Consider the lilies of the field how they grow. | 38:42
They neither toil nor spin. | 38:45
Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory, | 38:48
was not arrayed like one of these. | 38:51
But if God so clothed the grass of the field, | 38:54
which today is alive, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, | 38:57
will he not much clothe you, O men of little faith? | 39:01
Therefore, do not be anxious saying, | 39:05
"What shall we eat?" Or "What shall we drink?" | 39:08
or "What shall we wear?" | 39:10
for the Gentile seek all thee things, | 39:12
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. | 39:15
But seek first His kingdom and his righteousness. | 39:18
And all these things shall be yours as well. | 39:22
Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, | 39:25
for tomorrow will anxious for itself. | 39:28
Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day. | 39:32
Here ends the reading from the Gospel lesson. | 39:36

The sermon this morning | 41:29
may not be for you, | 41:32
but because of who I am, | 41:38
and because of my own personality, | 41:40
it is a word that needs to be spoken to me. | 41:46
But perhaps as we end this academic year, | 41:52
and some of us move from here to begin life anew | 41:57
and other places and in other ways. | 42:02
And as others of us remain here | 42:04
to continue our lives and our ministries, | 42:08
I hope and pray that there is a word for you. | 42:13
As I have read this week | 42:18
and reflected on the three passages | 42:20
read for our Scripture lessons for today, | 42:22
I have been very starkly reminded | 42:28
of one of God's recurring messages. | 42:32
And of one of Jesus' most pressing concerns. | 42:39
I see again, I think, what the word of God says to us | 42:46
if we are to know life. | 42:50
And that is that trust is the word. | 42:54
And that is that trust is the word. | 42:58
Trust is the way. | 43:01 | |
Trust is the attitude. | 43:05
Trust is the essential. | 43:09
Trust is the bridge between life and us. | 43:14
Know, there are times, I believe, | 43:19
when trust is the substance and the essence of life itself. | 43:22
Jesus obviously had a message to get across in just these | 43:30
few short verses found in the Sermon on the Mount. | 43:34
For five different times, with slightly different wordings, | 43:39
He tells us, "do not be anxious. | 43:43
"Do not be anxious about your life." | 43:49
"Is not life more than food, | 43:52
"and the body more than clothing?" | 43:53
"Which of you, by being anxious can add one cubit | 43:56
"to your span of life?" | 44:00
"Why are you anxious?" | 44:03
"Therefore, do not be anxious." | 44:06
But the thrust of these words of Jesus is not new. | 44:11
The thrust and the theme is found in Psalms 118. | 44:17
"O give thanks to the Lord for God is good. | 44:21
"For God's steadfast love endures forever." | 44:24
Do not be anxious. | 44:28
"Let Israel say, | 44:32 | |
"'God's steadfast love endures forever.'" | 44:34
Do not be anxious. | 44:38
"Let the house of Aaron say, | 44:41
"'God's steadfast love endures forever.'" | 44:43
Do not be anxious. | 44:48
"Let those who fear the Lord say, | 44:51
"'God's steadfast love endures forever.'" | 44:55
Do not be anxious. | 44:59
But not only was this the theme of the Psalmist, | 45:04
and not only was this the theme of Jesus, | 45:07
it also is the theme of Paul. | 45:09
"Have no anxiety about anything." | 45:12
Boy, wouldn't that be great? | 45:18
How absolutely magnificent that would be! | 45:21
To have no anxiety about anything. | 45:25

Trust. | 45:37 | |
Do not be anxious. | 45:39
Trust. | 45:41 | |
Trust is so very hard to come by these days. | 45:45
So very, very hard. | 45:49
Many psychiatrists tell us that our basic sense of trust, | 45:53
which is communicated primarily from parents, | 45:57
mother and father to their child, | 46:00
is felt and learned by the age of four, | 46:03
which is long before any of us ever begin | 46:06
to realize what it is to be a parent. | 46:09
But it's very, very hard to trust today. | 46:15
We feel that others are out to do us in. | 46:20
Others are out to get us, | 46:23
or at least to get ahead of us, | 46:25
or to do better than we. | 46:27
Others are going to take advantage of us, | 46:30
or are trying to control us, | 46:33
or at least somehow or other to shape us and use us. | 46:35
Maybe sometime for our good, | 46:39
but primarily for their own good. | 46:41
And tragically, | 46:44 | |
many of our feelings, | 46:46
many of these feelings which we have, | 46:47
are based on real experiences or real life | 46:50
or real encounters with the system and the machinery | 46:53
of the world around us. | 46:56
Or they are based on real acts and actions of others | 46:58
as they relate to us. | 47:02
But my friends, not to trust, | 47:05
not trusting is just about to destroy all of us | 47:08
one by one and all of us all together. | 47:13
Lack of trust of other nations is eating away | 47:20
at our relations with foreign governments | 47:24
and undermining their trust of us. | 47:26
Our lack of trust for them | 47:28
feeds their lack of trust for us. | 47:30
Lack of trust between us as individuals is destroying | 47:34
our feelings of respect and goodwill | 47:37
with others where we work, | 47:41
with others in our families at home, | 47:44
with our neighbors where we walk up and down the street | 47:47
and exchange pleasantries of the day. | 47:50
Fences get higher and higher. | 47:52
Watchdogs get fiercer and fiercer. | 47:55
Alarm systems become more and more sophisticated. | 47:58
Bombs get more and more powerful. | 48:02
Nuclear power becomes more and more destructive, | 48:04
and more and more intimidating from us to them, | 48:07
and from them to us, | 48:10
whoever "us" or whoever "them" happens to be. | 48:11
Lack of trust in self | 48:18
is creating all kinds of psychosis and neurosis | 48:20
and personality disorders. | 48:25
Lack of trust in self is, plainly, | 48:27
creating confusion and disorder and disorientation. | 48:32
creating confusion and disorder and disorientation. | 48:35
We can't trust others, how can we trust ourselves? | 48:40
Why should we trust ourselves when we can't trust others? | 48:44
We can't trust others, how can we trust others? | 48:47
Why should we trust others when we can't trust ourselves? | 48:49
Lack of trust in God is leading to all kinds of feelings | 48:56
of hopelessness, and helplessness, and futility. | 48:59
In God we trust. | 49:02 | |
And if I were wanting to do it like President Reagan did | 49:06
on television in February when he talked about the economy, | 49:09
I'd pull a coin out and hold it and remind you. | 49:12
"In God we trust," | 49:16
we emblazoned on our money over a century ago. | 49:19
Who does? | 49:25 | |
Where? | 49:26 | |
This nation, our people, | 49:29
you, me, we, | 49:32 | |
trust in God? | 49:36 | |
Well perhaps if we look nostalgically, | 49:37
and I think probably unrealistically | 49:40
back at the way things were a hundred years ago, | 49:42
we could put it truthfully on there and say, | 49:45
"In God we trust." | 49:47
Perhaps then they put "In God we trust" on the coins | 49:51
with an exclamation point. | 49:54
Today if we continue to put "In God we trust" on the coins, | 49:56
it seems to me we'd put it with a question mark. | 50:00
Lack of trust is just about to destroy us. | 50:06
And it may well do that if we, somehow or other, | 50:11
cannot learn to trust. | 50:15
Trust the flow of life | 50:18
and live and let others live. | 50:21
Jesus says, "Which of you by being anxious, | 50:27

Paul says, "Have no anxiety about anything." | 50:33
Jesus says again, "Do not be anxious about your life." | 50:36
The point is, to be anxious is fruitless; | 50:39
it is counterproductive. | 50:44
Trust is the key, the word, the experience, the way. | 50:46
But trust is so very very hard for us to come by these days. | 50:50
But trust is so very very hard for us to come by these days. | 50:53
We live our lives in all sorts of other ways: | 51:02
we try to organize our way through life, | 51:04
we try to put others in their places | 51:08
and give them their jobs. | 51:11
We set up committees and subcommittees, | 51:14
and rules and regulations, and machinery. | 51:16
And if we can just get things organized properly, | 51:20
then we think we can control what goes on around us. | 51:23
We try to seduce our way through life. | 51:33
We smile and are pleasant, | 51:38
and sweet and nice. | 51:41
We never cause anyone any trouble, | 51:44
at least openly, or honestly. | 51:47
And we never cause conflict. | 51:50
And we never want any conflict. | 51:52
We put on this front of goodwill and cordiality, | 51:54
and geniality, and often seething and fuming underneath | 51:58
all the time. | 52:02 | |
And we seduce people by our outward wiles and ways, | 52:05
and seek to control them and control what goes on around us. | 52:10
We try the paranoid approach to life. | 52:16
Never trustful of anyone or anything. | 52:20
We're always afraid, always suspicious. | 52:23
Always reading things into other people's words and actions. | 52:26
We keep lists, at least mental lists, | 52:30
of all of the fearful things that have ever happened to us, | 52:33
or that may happen to us, | 52:37
or that are happening to us. | 52:38
We try to anticipate the words and the ways of others, | 52:41
always trying to second-guess them or read into them | 52:44
what we are so very very fearful may be there. | 52:49
No one and nothing is to be trusted. | 52:54
Everyone and everything is out to get me or to do me in. | 53:00
The paranoid approach to life | 53:05
makes everything and everyone suspect. | 53:07
Or we try the power play approach to life. | 53:12
We overpower people. | 53:18
We bully them. | 53:21 | |
We pull rank on them. | 53:23
And pulling rank doesn't happen just in the military. | 53:29
I have learned in the last 11 years that I've been here. | 53:32
"I am the professor. | 53:38
"You're the student." | 53:41
"I'm the boss. | 53:44 | |
"You're the worker." | 53:45
"I'm the mother." | 53:47
Or, "I'm your daddy!" | 53:49
Or, "I'm in charge here." | 53:53
So we try to control others and we try to control life, | 53:56
now and in the future by trying to use force. | 54:00
By taking life by the nape of the neck and saying, | 54:04
"I'll make you be something | 54:06
"or I'll make something out of you." | 54:08
It's almost a feeling that "I'd better get hold of them, | 54:12
before they get hold of me" approach to life. | 54:17
Or we use the old dependent way to get through life. | 54:22
Or we use the old dependent way to get through life. | 54:25
This is our style of controlling life | 54:29
in the present and the future. | 54:32
Here we become the friend to everybody. | 54:35
The helper of everyone. | 54:39
The one who does good for all people. | 54:41
We're always ready and available to do for others | 54:44
to meet their needs, to answer their every call, | 54:47
to get them in debt to us. | 54:53
So that they then become dependent on us. | 54:57
And then very calculatingly, | 55:02
at the most propitious time for us, we say, | 55:04
"After all I've done for you, and you do that to me?" | 55:09
"After all I've done for you, and you do that to me?" | 55:12
The dependent way of controlling people, | 55:17
well, maybe you recognized some of your behavior | 55:20
in one or the other of these little models for living. | 55:23
Just to show that it is very, very hard | 55:29
to trust the flow, | 55:34
to trust others, | 55:38 | |
to trust God, | 55:40 | |
to trust self. | 55:42 | |
It is very hard to trust life. | 55:44
Very, very hard. | 55:47 | |
And so we do go through much of our days, | 55:51
trying to direct, | 55:53
trying to control or trying to determine | 55:55
all about our lives, our relationships, | 55:57
our present and our future. | 56:00
We try to be fully, or at least largely, in control | 56:03
of all of our actions | 56:06
and of the actions of others toward us, | 56:07
of what others do to us, | 56:10
of what they say about us, | 56:11
of how they feel toward us. | 56:13
And then when these efforts to control others | 56:17
and to control what goes on around us fail, | 56:20
and often they do, | 56:24
then we become very frustrated | 56:28
and very angry or upset, or depressed. | 56:31
Or we feel that we have failed, | 56:34
or that life has betrayed us, | 56:36
or that others don't love us, | 56:38
or care for us or respect us. | 56:39
We feel that there's something wrong with the way | 56:41
we handled the situation | 56:43
or the way we related to somebody, or worse yet, | 56:45
we feel that there is something badly wrong with us. | 56:49
What's wrong with me? | 56:52
Am I no good? | 56:54 | |
Am I a failure? | 56:55 | |
Why couldn't I have done better? | 56:56
Where did I go wrong? | 56:58
The conclusion then is that I am bad. | 56:59
I am worthless. | 57:02 | |
I am no good. | 57:03 | |
Just because we thought we were supposed to control. | 57:05
Just because we could not trust. | 57:09
Just because we could not trust the flow of life. | 57:12
Trust others. | 57:16 | |
Trust God's spirit. | 57:17
Trust ourselves. | 57:18
And so, now, this morning, | 57:20
in response to the Word of our Lord who advises us | 57:24
in the Sermon on the Mount, | 57:27
"Do not be anxious about your life." | 57:29
I invite you, | 57:32 | |
I invite you to trust the flow of your life, | 57:37
to trust yourself, | 57:43
to trust others, | 57:47 | |
to trust God. | 57:49 | |
Will you? | 57:54 | |
Now? | 57:57 | |
Today? | 57:59 | |
This very day? | 58:01 | |
And in the days to come? | 58:06
Trust, for there is power in true gentleness. | 58:13
Trust, for there is power in true gentleness. | 58:16
Trust, for there is strength in true peace. | 58:22
Trust, for there is strength in true peace. | 58:25
Trust, for there is direction in true freedom. | 58:30
Trust, for there is direction in true freedom. | 58:34
Trust is promised for tomorrow | 58:41
and is blessing for today. | 58:47
So I invite you this morning simply to trust. | 58:53
Trust the flow of life. | 58:59
Trust God. | 59:02 | |
Trust others. | 59:05 | |
Trust yourself. | 59:07 | |
It's not just that it won't work to go against the flow. | 59:11
Or to fight the currents of life, | 59:15
or to swim upstream. | 59:17
It is not just that | 59:19
try as we may, we really cannot control everything | 59:23
that goes on around us | 59:26
and everything that impinges upon us. | 59:27
It is not just that trusting is negative and fruitless, | 59:31
and is counterproductive. | 59:35
Trust the flow is not an invitation to be passive, | 59:38
or inert or indifferent. | 59:41
Trust the flow is not even blind resignation | 59:44
or acknowledging defeat, | 59:46
or the acceptance of the inevitable, | 59:48
or closing off one's mind, or spirit, or feelings. | 59:50
Trust the flow, I believe, is an intentional act | 59:53
of the will, and the mind, and the spirit. | 59:57
It is something we do. | 1:00:00
It is saying loudly, clearly, and convincingly, | 1:00:03
"I will not be overcome, or defeated, | 1:00:07
"or destroyed by anxiety. | 1:00:12
"Though anxious I may become, | 1:00:15
"though anxious I may be, | 1:00:18
"I will not live with anxiety forever." | 1:00:20
I hear Jesus say, | 1:00:26
"Do not be anxious about your life." | 1:00:28
And I'm convinced that he put those words in there | 1:00:30
for a reason. | 1:00:33 | |
I hear Jesus say, "Is not life more than food, | 1:00:34
"and the body more than clothing?" | 1:00:37
And I know that it takes more than something | 1:00:39
to put in your body and something to put on your body | 1:00:41
to give us meaning in life. | 1:00:43
I hear Jesus say, "Look at the birds of the air." | 1:00:45
And then I remember that God's wisdom | 1:00:48
does care for them. | 1:00:50
And I hear Jesus say, "Consider the lilies of the field." | 1:00:51
And I remember that God's love blesses them. | 1:00:54
But trusting the flow takes courage. | 1:01:04
It did for the psalmist. | 1:01:09
It did for Paul. | 1:01:11
It did for Jesus. | 1:01:13
And it does for us. | 1:01:14
For this involves risk. | 1:01:17
It involves facing the unknown | 1:01:21
and not knowing what the unknown is all about. | 1:01:23
It means, my friends, that there may indeed | 1:01:29
not be any light at the end of the tunnel. | 1:01:33
Life, even in the tunnel, | 1:01:40
and at the end of the tunnel, | 1:01:43
need not be despairing. | 1:01:45
Trust the flow is to face the uncertain | 1:01:54
and the uncontrollable, | 1:01:58
the demonic and the destructive, | 1:02:00
the helpful and the healthy, | 1:02:03
the tragedies and the triumphs. | 1:02:07
And still be able to trust. | 1:02:10
Martin Luther, whom we remember as the Great Reformer. | 1:02:15

O Lord, our God, | 1:07:04
we are glad to be alive in this Eastertide season. | 1:07:06
We come today and thank you for life, | 1:07:11
for this moment, | 1:07:15
for breathing, and feeling, and hearing, and seeing, | 1:07:17
for our very awareness. | 1:07:22
O God, we know that we take the miracle of life for granted. | 1:07:25
With blood flowing through our vessels, | 1:07:30
with our digestive processes working, | 1:07:33
our brains forming ideas, | 1:07:36
our eyes bringing signals to the brain, | 1:07:40
our ability to taste and enjoy food. | 1:07:43
Lord, we should stand up | 1:07:48
and acknowledge the very mystery of life itself. | 1:07:50
We should sing and shout in thanksgiving | 1:07:55
for just this moment of our existence. | 1:07:58
O God, we say that life is beautiful. | 1:08:03
That life is a gift of creation. | 1:08:08
Indeed, that life is a miracle. | 1:08:12
But then, O Lord, we come to know | 1:08:16
that you have come among us and tell us | 1:08:20
that this is not all of life. | 1:08:23
For you tell us that there is more. | 1:08:27
There is more life beyond the door of death. | 1:08:30
There is more life than touching, than seeing, than hearing. | 1:08:35
There is more life where all tears will be wiped away. | 1:08:42
There is more life where doubt will turn to trust. | 1:08:47
There is more life where night will turn to day. | 1:08:52
And there is more life when pain will be no more. | 1:08:57
O God, in this Easter season, | 1:09:02
we know that our hallelujahs cannot express our joy in life. | 1:09:05
And our Easter songs of resurrection | 1:09:11
cannot even begin to say our praise. | 1:09:14
But we offer them today, Lord, as tokens. | 1:09:19

to say that we are glad for life. | 1:09:27
