Our scripture lesson today | 3:52
will be read by a member of our freshman football squad. | 3:53
Tom Landry, Jr. of Dallas, Texas. | 3:58
- | Scripture is from Acts 9:1-20. | 4:09 |
"Now Saul, still breathing murderous threats | 4:13
against the Lord's disciples, | 4:15
went to the high priest | 4:17
and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus | 4:18
so that if he found any man or woman there | 4:22
who belonged to the Way, | 4:24
that he might bring them in chains to Jerusalem, | 4:25
but on his journey, as he was approaching Damascus, | 4:28
a sudden light flashed around him from heaven | 4:31
and he fell to the ground. | 4:34
Then he heard a voice saying to him, | 4:36
'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' | 4:38
'Who are you, sir?' he asked. | 4:42
'I am Jesus, who you are persecuting,' said the voice, | 4:43
'But get up and go into the city | 4:48
and there you will be told what you ought to do.' | 4:49
Saul's fellow travelers stood speechless | 4:52
for they heard the voice, but could not see anyone. | 4:55
When he got up from the ground and opened his eyes, | 4:59
he could see nothing. | 5:01
They had to take him by the hand and lead him into Damascus. | 5:02
And for three days he could not see | 5:06
and neither ate or drank. | 5:08
There was of Damascus, a disciple named Ananias. | 5:10
And the Lord said to him in a vision, 'Ananias.' | 5:13
And he answered, 'Yes, Lord,' | 5:16
the Lord said to him, 'Get up and go to the street, | 5:19
called the straight street | 5:21
and ask at the house of Judas | 5:23
for a man named Saul from Tarsus, for he is there praying. | 5:24
He has had a vision | 5:29 | |
and seen a man named Ananias come to him | 5:30
and lay his hands on him to restore his sight. | 5:32
But Ananias answered, | 5:35
'Lord I have heard many people tell of this man | 5:36
and the harm is done to Your people in Jerusalem. | 5:39
He is here with authority to arrest anyone | 5:42
who calls upon Your name.' | 5:44
The Lord said to him, | 5:47
'Go, this man is the means I have chosen | 5:48
for carrying my name among the heathen and their kings | 5:51
and among the descendants of Israel | 5:54
for I'm going to show him | 5:56
what he will have to endure for my sake. | 5:58
Ananias set out and went to the house | 6:01
and there he laid his hands upon Saul and said to him, | 6:03
'Saul, my brother, I have sent by the Lord Jesus Christ, | 6:06
who appeared to you on your journey | 6:10
so that you may regain your sight | 6:11
and be filled with the Holy Spirit.' | 6:13
Something like scales immediately dropped from his eyes | 6:15
and his sight was restored and he got up and was baptized. | 6:18
And after taking some food, regained his strength, | 6:21
Saul stayed for some time with the disciples of Damascus | 6:24
and began it once to declare in the synagogues | 6:28
that Jesus was the son of God." | 6:30
Here endeth the lesson. | 6:32
- | I wish to say just a few words | 6:43 |
about a group that is national in scope, | 6:45
and which is local in its work, | 6:49
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes. | 6:52
Most of you who are here | 6:55
are familiar with this fellowship or organization | 6:56
and so I will say very little about it | 6:59
in the event there should be someone here | 7:02
who is not familiar with it, | 7:04
let me say that it is a national organization | 7:05
with headquarters in Kansas City, | 7:07
which is in its membership, entirely athletic, | 7:10
that is to say there are high school | 7:16
and professional athletes and coaches in the organization. | 7:18
And these athletes rather than churchmen, as such, | 7:23
determine the policies in the program of the FCA. | 7:28
In my opinion, | 7:33 | |
it is one of the finest organizations in America today, | 7:34
one which has meant a great deal to our own Duke campus. | 7:38
And I feel will continue to mean a great deal to it | 7:43
in the years to come. | 7:46
We will be reorganizing it again this fall, | 7:48
as we do each year. | 7:50 | |
There are some members of the football squad, | 7:53
some members of the basketball squad and track squad | 7:56
who have attended the summer conferences of the FCA. | 7:58
It is not a membership organization | 8:03
in the sense that one joins once for a lifetime, | 8:06
but membership constitutes primarily participation in it. | 8:08
And lack of participation | 8:13
means generally lack of membership. | 8:14
You will be seeing notices from time to time | 8:17
of our meetings this fall and through the winter, | 8:20
There is some expense connected with the operation | 8:26
of the program of the FCA and that expense | 8:29
is mainly sending athletes to summer conferences. | 8:31
This is a rather expensive undertaking | 8:36
and a very worthwhile one. | 8:38
Another thing which costs money | 8:40
is the sending of these athletes out occasionally | 8:41
to churches and high schools and youth groups in the area | 8:44
to make talks. | 8:48 | |
Generally, the groups who invite them | 8:50
do not have the money to pay their expenses to go out there. | 8:53
There are other items which cost money, | 8:58
but each year in these two football services, | 9:02
the first two Sundays in September, | 9:04
we always have the offering | 9:06
go to the local chapter of the FCA. | 9:08
And so at the time that we have the offering, | 9:11
that is where all of the money | 9:13
in which you contribute will go. | 9:15
When the offering is received, | 9:19
it will be received by four of our five ushers this morning. | 9:21
They are Fred Zirkle, Jay Wilson, Roger Hayes, | 9:26
Herb Coins and Rodger Parker. | 9:29
We're grateful to these | 9:31
and to those who last Sunday helped us in our service. | 9:32
May we now stand as we sing the hymn, | 9:38

- | My topic for this morning, The Motivator, | 24:46 |
is certainly not a new one to this chapel. | 24:49
And perhaps some of you will find it | 24:53
in the same theme as Dr. Wilkinson's sermon of last Sunday, | 24:55
The Power of Enthusiasm, | 25:00
The word motivation is talked of and about a great deal. | 25:04
But I would like for us | 25:09
to take a closer look at it this morning, | 25:10
because I think that it is appropriate on this occasion | 25:13
and perhaps it will develop some new meaning for you. | 25:18
A definition of the word motivate | 25:22
as found in the "American College Dictionary" | 25:24
states that motivate is to provide with a motive. | 25:27
Motive is defined as that something | 25:32
that prompts a person to act a certain way. | 25:35
Therefore, we can say that a motivator | 25:40
is something or someone who moves us to action. | 25:43
The late Alexis Carrel, a Nobel prize winner | 25:48
and a world famous scientist, | 25:54
in his book "Man the Unknown" | 25:56
wrote that, "Intelligence never urges men to action. | 26:00
That only fear, enthusiasm, self-sacrifice, | 26:05
hatred and love can make or not make people do things." | 26:11
These traits are considered by some | 26:18
as the ancient motivators. | 26:20
You can certainly understand that today, | 26:23
we would not want to use hatred as a form of motivation. | 26:26
In today's society, the motive is that something | 26:31
that ministers, athletic coaches, supervisors, | 26:35
salesmen, managers and parents are searching for | 26:40
to get the right kind of action | 26:47
from the people with whom they work and guide. | 26:48
Motivation, this is one of the biggest problems of people. | 26:53
Motivating others, or more important motivating ourselves. | 26:58
In industry, | 27:04 | |
many hours are spent around the bargaining table, | 27:05
discussing wage increases, profit sharing, | 27:07
guaranteed annual income, retirement, | 27:11
and other fringe benefits | 27:14
such as the problems that the United Automobile Workers | 27:16
and the automobile manufacturers face today. | 27:19
These demands are usually met. | 27:23
Sometimes after long strikes, lockouts, walkouts | 27:28
and more often than not harsh words | 27:34
between labor and management, | 27:36
only to have the worker return to the same job, | 27:39
doing the same thing, | 27:43
but now because of increased wage cost | 27:46
management expects more productivity | 27:49
and the question of how | 27:53
is given to managers and supervisors | 27:55
and they all come up with the same answer, motivation. | 27:57
As I said earlier, this is not a new idea. | 28:02
Motivation can be and is used in many different ways. | 28:05
For example, here on the campus, | 28:09
the renovation of an old building, | 28:11
the dormitory, the old gym, the locker rooms, | 28:13
or the building of a new structure, | 28:18
such as the library edition can be a stimulus to action | 28:20
for both the staff and the students. | 28:25
Yet the momentum gained from this form of motivation | 28:29
can be short-lived, we must constantly look for new fuel. | 28:32
Certainly today's academic climate, | 28:39
at Duke and other campuses, calls for an attitude, | 28:42
a disposition of work and work hard. | 28:46
As a result of this climate, | 28:52
instructors demand more productivity | 28:53
to help prepare the student. | 28:57
As President Lyndon Johnson said, | 28:59
"For a world of unlimited promise, | 29:01
awesome responsibilities, risk and rewards, | 29:05
a world of untold satisfaction for those who seek progress." | 29:10
Certainly we can say that we all are motivators. | 29:16
How many times have you heard someone remark | 29:19
about an individual who has excelled | 29:21
that that person is a self-motivator? | 29:25
We certainly look closely at these people | 29:28
who get the job done with seemingly little effort | 29:31
and wonder how do they do it. | 29:35
At a recent industry meeting, | 29:38
the old question of motivating employees | 29:40
to increase production was again being discussed, | 29:43
as each supervisor talked | 29:47
of the possibilities and the problems on his shift, | 29:49
it became apparent | 29:54
that we needed to motivate our motivators. | 29:56
The question was then asked, who motivates the motivators? | 30:01
Management today can quickly refer to volumes of bulletins, | 30:06
outlining management seminars designed to motivate managers | 30:11
who in turn return to the company | 30:16
with new ideas for their supervisors to use | 30:19
in motivating their people. | 30:22
A young man in Waco, Texas, Paul J. Meyer | 30:26
has developed a multimillion dollar business | 30:30
Success Motivation Incorporated, | 30:34
producers of personal motivation. | 30:38
The University of Michigan, Wake Forest University, | 30:41
two names that are in the thoughts | 30:45
of many of you here this morning, | 30:47
and other colleges and universities have similar programs | 30:49
aimed at solving management problems, | 30:53
or motivating tired managers to action with new ideas. | 30:57
A recent bulletin from the Michigan Seminar | 31:02
stated that the course Management of Managers | 31:04

that previous sessions have been oversubscribed, | 31:27
and it is recommended to be sure to have a chair, | 31:31
that you register early. | 31:36
Columbia University's Arden House, | 31:39
a so-called hotbed of high-level seminars, | 31:42
boasts that its sessions now average two applicants | 31:45

of well over 10 million dollars. | 32:08
This association is in its 44th year. | 32:11
It offers more than 1500 courses, seminars and workshops, | 32:15
which vary in length from one to four weeks | 32:20
and are designed to keep pace with change | 32:25
and innovation in the industry. | 32:28
As one course description states, | 32:31
"Most of all, you will learn how to exercise | 32:33
leadership skills, that motivates your subordinates | 32:38
to all out team effort and maximum results." | 32:42
These associations continue to grow. | 32:48
Dale Carnegie courses remain full. | 32:51
The consulting business is booming. | 32:54
The demand is great. | 32:58
Yet, despite this seminar-mania, | 33:00
both men and management are not satisfied | 33:04
that these programs have the answer to that key, | 33:07
that secret key, motivation. | 33:12
In fact, the September issue of "Dunn's Review" | 33:16
had an article entitled What is a Seminar Worth? | 33:19
"This report states that corporations | 33:23
are spending over 5 billion dollars for these seminars. | 33:25
Yet it is hard to tell whether any have been effective." | 33:33
states H.H. Scott of Scott Incorporated. | 33:36
It is reported that International Harvest, | 33:42
a company for one, not long ago sent a team | 33:44
of its supervisors to the University of Chicago, | 33:48
for a seminar designed to give them | 33:51
greater behavioral insights and to reduce strife | 33:55
between the supervisors and the workers under their charge. | 34:00
"Yet on their return," says the company, | 34:05
"The relations in some departments actually worsened." | 34:07
To develop an understanding | 34:12
of the impact on these seminars and their participants. | 34:14
The American Management Association | 34:17
has recently embarked on an in-depth study | 34:19
with one large company in which it examines | 34:24
the before and after attitudes and performances | 34:27
of seminar participants. | 34:31
The president of the American Management Association, | 34:35
Lawrence Appley, believes strongly in the work | 34:39
the Management Association is doing | 34:42
to help develop and motivate others. | 34:45
He further states and I quote, "Surely it is true, | 34:49
that it is more blessed to give than to receive." | 34:54
In a recent talk, | 34:58 | |
this motivator said that the successful people, | 35:00
the teachers, the doctors, the coaches | 35:04
are those who really desire to help others | 35:08
by giving of themselves. | 35:12
For example, consider the minister who spends hours, weeks, | 35:15
months, years of hard work, thought and prayer, | 35:21
hoping to influence his people | 35:27
to successful living by giving. | 35:29
You are a motivator when you inspire others to action, | 35:33
yet the kind of leader or motivator you are | 35:38
depends upon what you're being exposed to | 35:42
and how you are being refueled. | 35:45
Certainly leadership requires fellowship. | 35:48
Ernest Breech, | 35:52 | |
Chairman of the Board of Trans World Airline | 35:53
and management re-builder of such companies | 35:56
as Bendix Aviation, North American Aviation | 35:59
and the Ford Motor Company, | 36:02
states that in trying to rebuild Ford after World War II, | 36:04
He knew that he would have to surround himself | 36:09
with good leaders. | 36:12
Managers who would be not just bosses, | 36:14
but men who can inspire others to action. | 36:17
But what are the great motivators, the great men in history, | 36:22
the heroes, the people who motivate us, | 36:27
or better still, what of you and me? | 36:32
What are our sources of inspiration | 36:36
other than fellowship, seminars or books? | 36:39
Certainly the most important source for any of us | 36:45
must come from our individual religious philosophy. | 36:49
The belief that there is a power greater than man, | 36:55
a power from which we can obtain fuel, | 37:00
obtainable not only from the fellowship in this great chapel | 37:05
on a Sunday morning, | 37:09
But the belief that we can obtain this fuel anywhere, | 37:11
Immanuel Kant said, | 37:17
"Accept a belief in God, because we need such a belief. | 37:23
Why not link ourselves, now, | 37:28
with the inexhaustible motive power | 37:31
that spins the universe?" | 37:35
Have you ever tried sitting here in this chapel | 37:38
on some weekday alone, | 37:41
observing the light through the beautiful windows, | 37:46
feeling the atmosphere, the tingle, | 37:50
Knowing that some power we can't see | 37:55
is inspiring us because we believe, try it. | 37:59
Our scripture as read referred to the conversion of Paul | 38:08
as written in the Acts, | 38:12
certainly Paul who developed through this vision, | 38:15
such a belief in Christ, | 38:19
that he was able to have | 38:21
a tremendous influence on Christian thought, | 38:22
throughout the development of Christian doctrine | 38:26
and whose work continues to motivate men today | 38:30
must be a source of inspiration to us. | 38:34
Paul's fate was great and courageous. | 38:40
We marvel at Paul's ability to maintain this faith. | 38:45
His conversion was a complete reversal | 38:50
of his former convictions, | 38:53
and he, unlike the 12, never talked with or saw Jesus. | 38:58
Tradition has it that Paul was not an impressive man | 39:04
in physique, in appearance, yet he could be impressive, | 39:09
a leader, a great motivator. | 39:15
When given an opportunity to defend himself | 39:19
as an apostle of Jesus Christ | 39:22
and tell the story of his conversion, of his belief | 39:25
some say that motivation is simply belief, | 39:31
not wanting, but believing. | 39:36
Perhaps this is why we sometimes fail to develop | 39:39
a proper atmosphere of motivation. | 39:44
We are appealing to our wants, rather than our belief. | 39:48
We are in the wrong key. | 39:54
We want an A in a course, we want a victory, | 39:56
but yet we don't believe, | 40:01
because we have know we have not prepared ourselves for it. | 40:03
Over 2000 years ago, | 40:08
these words were written and they live today | 40:12
because of their truth. | 40:15
"The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want." | 40:18
And the greatest teacher we have known | 40:22
gave us the key many times in words like these, | 40:25
"If thou can believe all things are possible | 40:29
to him that believe it." | 40:34
And so motivation is a great power. | 40:37
It is not wanting, it is believing. | 40:41
This is the secret key, | 40:44
belief is the realization and conviction | 40:47
that you are using your life for a worthwhile purpose | 40:52
and that your efforts are productive and useful. | 40:55
It is a belief in your parents, teachers, coaches, | 41:00
teammates, and in the work you're doing. | 41:05
People with belief do not worry about energy | 41:10
and drive and enthusiasm, | 41:13
these are the people who are self-motivators. | 41:16
The people who excel, | 41:20
the players who play beyond their abilities. | 41:22
Their energies are supplied | 41:26
by this deep motivating well of belief, | 41:28
a belief in the divine power and the teachings | 41:33
of the greatest motivator of them all, Jesus Christ, | 41:36
- | Let us pray. | 41:50 |
Our heavenly Father, as we look into our own hearts, | 41:56
into the depths of our own beings, | 42:00
we do not always understand what we see. | 42:03
We find a confused picture, cross purposes. | 42:07
We know that as Thou doest look at us, | 42:13
Thou doest understand us better than we do ourselves. | 42:16
Thous doest know what is there. | 42:20
Because of our lack of information about ourselves | 42:24
and because of thy wisdom, we need most of all, | 42:28
simply to offer Thee what we have and who we are | 42:34
and ask that Thy Holy Spirit may come in | 42:39
and give us the right motives, the right purposes, | 42:41
the correct beliefs, | 42:46
so that we may not waste our time and energy | 42:50
going about useless things | 42:54
and self-defeating cross purposes. | 42:56
We ask Thee to straighten us out | 43:02
and make us who we should be to give us the power then | 43:05
to do the things which Christ is leading us to do. | 43:10
We ask it in his name, Amen. | 43:16
