- | Let us hear the word of God as it is contained | 21:19 |
in the first epistle of Paul to the Corinthians, | 21:23
the 11th chapter, | 21:27
verses 17 to 26, | 21:30 | |
reading from the Moffatt Translation. | 21:34
"But in giving you the following injunction | 21:40
I cannot commend you; for you are the worse, | 21:44
not the better for assembling together. | 21:49
First of all, in your church-meetings, | 21:55
I am told that cliques prevail. | 21:59
And I partly believe it. | 22:04
There must be parties among you | 22:07
if genuine Christians are to be recognized. | 22:10
But this makes it impossible | 22:15
for you to eat the Lord's Supper | 22:17
when you hold your gathering. | 22:22
As you eat, everyone takes his own supper; | 22:25
one goes hungry while another gets drunk. | 22:30
What! have you no houses to eat and drink in? | 22:36
Do you think you can show disrespect to the church of God | 22:43
and put the poor to shame? | 22:48
What can I say to you? | 22:52
Commend you? Not for this. | 22:55
I passed on to you what I received from the Lord himself, | 23:01
namely, on the night he was betrayed, | 23:07
the Lord Jesus took a loaf, | 23:10
and after thanking God, he broke it, saying, | 23:14
'This means my body broken for you. | 23:21
Do this in memory of me.' | 23:28
In the same way, he took the cup after supper, saying, | 23:33
'This cup means the new covenant ratified by my blood. | 23:38
As often as you drink it, do it in memory of me.' | 23:49
For as often as you eat this loaf and drink this cup, | 23:57
you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." | 24:03
May God bless to us this reading of his Word. | 24:13
When Paul dictated this passage, | 24:27
we was probably in a howling bad temper, | 24:31
and with good reason. | 24:37
Let us pass a speedy eye | 24:39
over the situation in that first century Grecian town. | 24:41
If you want to read about a pastor with problems, | 24:49
then sit down and read right through 1st Corinthians | 24:54
at one sitting. | 25:00 | |
Paul had founded a church in Corinth, | 25:03
about 50 miles due west of Athens. | 25:06
And to give you the flavor of this Seaport town, | 25:11
hear this ancient proverb about it. | 25:16
"It is not given to everyone to visit Corinth. | 25:20
It is not given to everyone to visit Corinth." | 25:28
That was originally | 25:31
a Mediterranean ship master's sigh of envy | 25:33
or of satisfaction. | 25:38
Corinth was like port Said today. | 25:42
Or was it yesterday? | 25:47
Corinth was a spontaneously wicked city | 25:50
which majored in wantonness and minored in spectator sports. | 25:54
And there Paul preached the gospel of the grace of God | 26:02
who redeems men from the kind of things | 26:10
which the Corinthian Chamber of Commerce promoted. | 26:13
But inevitably as the church settled down in Corinth, | 26:20
so Corinth settled down in the church. | 26:24
And as was read in the lesson, | 26:29
some folk had a celebration of the Lord's Supper, | 26:31
actually became drunk while others had nothing to eat | 26:35
or drink at all. | 26:41 | |
In its inception, | 26:43
the Lord's Supper was probably a common meal, | 26:44
a love feast, a church supper. | 26:49
And in Corinth, it was evidently cafeteria service, | 26:53
where everyone did not sit down and eat at the same time. | 26:58
Those who came late were not only unfed, | 27:03
they had to look at the early comers | 27:07
hilariously intoxicated. | 27:11
Now, Paul's reaction was first of all to scold. He did. | 27:14
His later and lasting reaction | 27:22
was to overemphasize one aspect of the supper. | 27:26
He overstressed that it was a remembrance of the last meal | 27:32
which Jesus ate with the 12 | 27:39
before he went out to suffer and to die on their behalf. | 27:43
Thus, the Lord's Supper | 27:49
is a proclamation of the Lord's death. | 27:50
Is that a cause for hilarious drunkenness? | 27:57
Sober up, settle down, behave yourselves. | 28:03
Now Paul understandably was reacting to a situation, | 28:11
but he was overreacting. | 28:15
And his emphasis on the death of Jesus, | 28:20
on the Lord's Supper as a repeated memorial of his death | 28:25
has darkened the holy communion | 28:31
for generations of church members | 28:35
certainly in Scottish Presbyterianism. | 28:38
The lay elders who sit with the minister | 28:44
around the holy table are dressed in sober black. | 28:47
Sober, that's an appropriate adjective. | 28:54
The hymns are sung at an even slower tempo than usual | 28:59
like a dirge or a coronach. | 29:04
A lament for the dead. | 29:09
The church was bathed in gloom. | 29:12
The adjective which characterized | 29:17
the service of holy communion in my boyhood, Scotland | 29:19
was somber. S-O-M-B-E-R. | 29:22
And you know how Webster defines somber? | 29:26
So shaded or full of shadows. | 29:30
Has to be dark and gloomy, without light or brightness. | 29:34
And three analogous words are appended | 29:42
to assist in the elucidation of somber: | 29:45
melancholy, grave, depressing. | 29:48
For many of my 25 years here at Duke, | 29:58
this has been the keynote of the Lord's Supper | 30:02
in the chapel. | 30:06 | |
The one anthem which was sung for years | 30:09
was Bach's "Crucifixus." | 30:11
Crucified for us, | 30:15
suffered under Pontius Pilate, dead, buried. | 30:17
The spiritual atmosphere | 30:23
was one of unmitigated, unrelieved somberness. | 30:25
Now, there's a time and a place for that anthem, | 30:30
at the service on Monday, Thursday. | 30:35
That is on the night before Good Friday. | 30:39
Then it's wise to ponder what the ordinary goodness | 30:44
of a noble religion like Judaism | 30:50
and of a worthy empire like Rome | 30:54
did to the extraordinary goodness of a man like Jesus. | 30:59
It's also salutary though frightening | 31:06
to think of a world with no Easter message. | 31:10
But there's a joyous aspect to the Lord's Supper | 31:17
which is caught in such a word as Eucharist, Thanksgiving. | 31:22
Not for what Jesus the Christ did, | 31:29
but for what he is to us today, | 31:34
for what he'll mean to us tomorrow. | 31:40
For some early Christians, the common meal, | 31:43
the the communion was an anticipation, | 31:48
a foretaste of the messianic banquet | 31:52
at the table of the Lord in heaven. | 31:58
They look forward enough as well as backward in soberness. | 32:02
They rejoiced as well as mourned. | 32:09
They anticipated as well as remembered. | 32:12
And that is an emphasis to be recaptured | 32:15
and cherished and celebrated. | 32:21
And so, it was decided that today's service | 32:25
should be one of gratitude and joy. | 32:28
If Paul's Corinthians were wrong | 32:32
in becoming drunk at the uncommon common meal, | 32:34
it may have been in some instances the vice of a virtue, | 32:41
the expression of expectation, | 32:47
the appreciation of companionship | 32:51
in the fellowship of the church. | 32:55
And therefore, we chose as the hymn of preparation, | 32:59
one which reveals this joy and this anticipation, Hymn 318. | 33:03
Now, instead of a prayer after this meditation, | 33:12
let us remain seated and in unison read the first stanza. | 33:16
And then let us listen to the organist | 33:25
playing the tune, "German Chorale." | 33:27
And then let us rise and sing the whole hymn. | 33:32
Now, the first stanza. | 33:37
