Probably every true golfer, at some time in his life, | 15:48
has indulged in the fantasy of imagining | 15:55
that he would one day step up to a golf ball | 16:00
and hit it so perfectly | 16:05
and so hard | 16:07 | |
that it would streak toward the horizon | 16:10
and fall completely out of sight. | 16:12
Well in this miraculous decade of the '70s, | 16:17
when it seems that nearly anything and everything | 16:21
that we can imagine will actually happen, | 16:23
this golfing fantasy did become a fact indeed. | 16:27
On a Saturday morning, eastern standard earth time, | 16:35
February the sixth, 1971, in the year of our Lord, | 16:41
a lunarnaut earthling by the name of Alan E. Shepherd Junior | 16:49
stood on the surface of the moon | 16:56
at a point which he called the Fromorrow Valley Country Club | 16:59
and laid a special heat resistant golf ball | 17:05
on the surface in front of his feet. | 17:09
With a six iron previously devised for him by Jack Harden | 17:14
of the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, | 17:19
he took a swing at the ball. | 17:22
While his fellow lunarnaut, Edgar Mitchell, | 17:26
and millions of TV fans on earth watched. | 17:29
Well as you know, his first swing at the ball missed. | 17:35
Then came the second attempt. | 17:40
This one connected solidly | 17:43
and the golf ball soared rapidly towards the horizon. | 17:46
And as we would say here on Earth, | 17:50
it went clear out of this moon. | 17:52
Alan Shepard himself reported that the ball traveled miles | 17:56
and miles and miles. | 18:00
So never before in all the history of golfing | 18:05
has a ball responded so magnificently | 18:09
to a whack from a golf club. | 18:13
According to the golf pro at the River Oaks Country Club, | 18:17
Alan Shepard normally gets about 135 yards | 18:22
when he clouts a golf ball with a six iron on Earth. | 18:27
Now there are basically two reasons why the ball | 18:34
only goes 135 yards on Earth | 18:37
as compared with a flight lasting miles, miles | 18:40
and miles on the moon. | 18:43
The first is that on the moon there are no | 18:48
atmospheric particles to obstruct the flight of the ball. | 18:51
That is, it encounters no resistance | 18:56
as it makes its way through space. | 19:01
Whereas when a ball is hit on Earth, | 19:05
it has to push its way through billions | 19:09
of atmospheric particles, molecules of oxygen and nitrogen, | 19:12
which are so numerous that friction with them | 19:18
causes meteors to disintegrate with fervent heat | 19:22
whenever a meteor attempts to pass through our atmosphere. | 19:27
Now constant collision with these particles therefore | 19:32
slows down a golf ball on Earth. | 19:36
Well, the second reason for the much shorter flight | 19:42
of a golf ball on Earth is that the downward pull | 19:45
of gravity is six times as great on Earth | 19:48
as it is on the moon. | 19:54
This means that on the moon a golfer can get the ball | 19:59
to almost any target in sight. | 20:02
Whereas the same effort on Earth only produces a meager, | 20:05
a disappointing result. | 20:12
Now, this is a parable of the Christian life. | 20:16
If we were in heaven, it would be easy to make | 20:22
good resolutions and promptly achieve them. | 20:25
Our normal experience would be to see an ethical objective, | 20:31
take aim toward it and quickly attain it. | 20:35
Here on Earth, however, we encounter obstructions | 20:40
all along the way of Christian effort. | 20:44
We constantly feel the drag of a downward pull. | 20:47
As a result, when we make an all-out Christian drive | 20:52
toward a lofty ethical goal, | 20:56
we discover the momentum of our drive is often | 20:59
very quickly abated and is much more nearly represented | 21:03
by Shepherd's 135 yards on Earth, | 21:07
rather than by his miles and miles and miles on the moon. | 21:12
You see, we dedicate our life to Christ | 21:20
and set out to bear witness to his gospel. | 21:22
But soon we find that our witness has been compromised. | 21:25
Because, for example, we may have been unwilling to take | 21:30
an unpopular stand at some crucial moment in our life. | 21:34
We joined the church. | 21:40
We say we're going to be a part of cure | 21:41
rather than the disease of the world. | 21:43
And what happens? | 21:47
Before long we discover that pride entered | 21:48
and nullified much of our effectiveness. | 21:53
It's always been this way. | 21:58
Soon after the Apostle Paul founded the Christian church | 22:01
at Corinth, he had to write them that he had received | 22:04
reports of quarreling among them. | 22:06
Reports of jealousy, reports of strife. | 22:10
The book of Revelation alleged that the church in Ephesus | 22:15
had left its first love, that the church in Pergamum | 22:18
had a few members who were fornicators, | 22:22
that the church in Sardis was virtually dead. | 22:25
And then as we heard read a while ago, | 22:30
the Christians in Laodicea were neither cold nor hot. | 22:32
They were just lukewarm. | 22:35
This is the experience of Christians | 22:39
down through 19 centuries. | 22:42
Even after we have been converted | 22:45
and have begun to live the Christian life, | 22:46
the Holy Spirit quickens our conscience | 22:49
and shows us both how we have backslidden | 22:52
and how we have never claimed at all, | 22:57
some of the high ground which Christians ought to claim. | 22:59
What then are we to do when we realize this? | 23:05
Well frankly, there is the temptation to quit trying, | 23:09
to lose heart, to settle for the compromise, | 23:14
to rationalize our failures and then adjust to them, | 23:19
to give in. | 23:23 | |
And along with that attitude comes the feeling | 23:26
that we've been cut off by Jesus Christ | 23:29
since we failed to make a perfect witness. | 23:31
But it is at this point that we hear the call to supper, | 23:37
the Lord's supper. | 23:42
Just at the moment when we were down and out, | 23:45
when we justly feel unclean and unworthy, | 23:48
Jesus tells us that he has prepared a table for us | 23:53
and that he wants us to come and have supper with him. | 23:58
He is the host and we are his guests. | 24:02
Do you remember the first time he arranged | 24:09
one of these suppers? | 24:11
While he and his 12 disciples were eating it, | 24:14
he announced that one of them would betray him | 24:17
later in that evening. | 24:20
Judas asked if he would be the one to do it | 24:23
and indeed he was. | 24:26
He was the one who did betray Jesus that night. | 24:29
A most important fact we are prone to forget, however, | 24:39
is that both Matthew and Mark report, | 24:43
all the other 11 disciples also asked | 24:47
whether they personally would be the one to betray him. | 24:51
Each one of the 12 original apostles | 24:57
who had left everything to follow Christ (coughing) | 24:59
realized that in his own heart where the seeds of betrayal. | 25:04
That in his very being where the particles of resistance, | 25:12
the downward pull of a powerful force of moral gravity. | 25:17
We are invited to supper, like those original 12. | 25:23
After we have been to the Lord's table, | 25:30
we can then go out and make a new beginning. | 25:33
