We have confessed before God. | 0:13
We now hear the works insurance of Gods Pardon. | 0:19
Which come not from authority of man | 0:24
but from the authority of the work of God. | 0:29
As recorded in the Bible. | 0:33
And although Christians through the centuries, | 0:38
have by and large never been literalists | 0:41
in their interpretation of the scriptures. | 0:45
The church has always in its orthodox expressions | 0:50
affirmed the centrality, | 0:55
[indistinct] | 1:01 | |
by the holy spirit. | 1:03
And it is from this Bible, | 1:07
that we hear these words. | 1:11
God is not willing that any should perish | 1:14
but that all should come to repentance. | 1:20
And then again, in the Bible, | 1:25
he has assured us, that if we repent | 1:27
if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just | 1:31
and will forgive us our sins | 1:36
and will cleanse us from all uncleaness. | 1:38
So be it. | 1:43 | |

- | The lesson today is a letter written by Paul | 12:07 |
when he was in Corinths | 12:11
and sent to the Romans by Phoebe a Deaconess in the church | 12:12
at nearby San Korea. | 12:16
I am reading from the JB Phillips translation. | 12:18
"I want this letter to introduce to you Phoebe, our sister | 12:22

She has herself been of great assistance to many, | 12:36
not excluding myself. | 12:39
Shake hands for me with Priscilla and Aquila. | 12:42
They have not only worked with me for Christ | 12:46
but they have risked their necks to save my life. | 12:48
Not only I, but all the Gentile churches | 12:52
owe them a great debt. | 12:55
Give my love to the little church that meets in their house. | 12:57
Shake the hand of dear Apanitis, | 13:03
the first convent to Christ in Asia. | 13:06
And of course greet Mary, | 13:09
who has worked so hard for you. | 13:11
A handshake too for Andronicus | 13:15
and Junias my kinsman and fellow prisoners. | 13:17
They are outstanding men among the messengers | 13:21
and were Christians before I was. | 13:23
Another warm greeting for Ampliatus, | 13:27
dear Christian that he is | 13:29

Remember me to Tryphena and Tryphosa, | 13:53
who worked so hard for the Lord | 13:56
and to my dear Persis, who has also done great work for him. | 13:59
Shake the hand of Rufus for me, that splendid Christian | 14:04
and greet his mother who has been a mother to me too. | 14:09
Greetings to Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, | 14:14
Hermes and their Christian group. | 14:19
Also to Philologus and Julia. | 14:23
Nereus and his sister | 14:25
and Olympus and the Christians who are with them. | 14:27
Give one another, a hearty handshake all round from my sake, | 14:31
the greetings of all the churches I am in touch with, | 14:36
come to you with this letter." | 14:39

Once upon a time | 22:38 | |
All the best stories start that way. | 22:42
Once upon a time, I wrote a doctoral thesis on St. Paul. | 22:46
I had no overwhelming desire to do it, | 22:54
but I needed an Academic Trade Union Card | 22:58
to deliver me from the status of Scab Labor. | 23:03
In due time, I completed the Magnum Opus over 600 pages | 23:09
and then I added one more footnote, | 23:17
a personal note to St. Paul himself. | 23:20
It was the old Irish semi insult. | 23:26
The back of me hand to you, | 23:32
the back of me hand. | 23:35
I had had a God's plenty of the Apostle to the Gentiles. | 23:38
My advisor hit the ceiling, | 23:46
then he came back to earth | 23:50
and recommended that I remove the footnote | 23:53
otherwise I would be failed by the examining committee. | 23:58
I removed it. | 24:03 | |
I passed. | 24:06 | |
In due course, I began to enjoy St. Paul. | 24:08
To be beholden to him. | 24:13
In fact, he converted me | 24:16
and he gave me the primer | 24:21
for the meditation at this service. | 24:22
When we remember one who worshiped in this chapel | 24:26
for many years | 24:29 | |
and whose memory is perpetuated in the rot iron candelabra | 24:32
a gift of a sister | 24:38 | |
and in the alter lectern, | 24:40
the gift of her fellow members | 24:42
in the Duke University Church. | 24:45
The primer, a double primer is found in Roman 16:1-16 | 24:49
our morning lesson. | 24:55
For me, a favorite passage from St. Paul. | 24:58
Let me share with you my reflections on this little letter | 25:04
now incorporated in Paul's great letter | 25:09
to the church at Rome. | 25:12
All that Paul is doing is just saying greetings to, | 25:16
be sure to remember me too, | 25:21
give my love to, | 25:24 | |
shake hands with, | 25:27
a group of men and women. | 25:29
Who had held up his hands | 25:31
and had kept him going. | 25:34
There's not a word of arguing or exhorting. | 25:37
Of debating or haranging. | 25:42
Of justifying or condemning. | 25:46
He's just saying, thank you | 25:50
out loud, on Papyrus. | 25:54
And nine women | 25:58 | |
are in that list. | 26:02 | |
Nine. | 26:05 | |
There is Priscilla wife of Aquila, | 26:07
who were stalwart supporters. | 26:11
There is a Mary, of course. | 26:14
There were many Mary's in the church. | 26:18
Paul distinguishes this one by saying, | 26:20
"she has worked hard for you". | 26:22
Evidently this Mary had Martha tendencies. | 26:26
Tryphona and Tryphosa are linked together | 26:31
as also having worked hard in the Lord. | 26:34
Persis is noted as beloved | 26:39
and as having worked very hard in the Lord. | 26:43
Then there's the mother of Rufus, | 26:47
of whom Paul says, "she has been a mother to me". | 26:50
Who is this woman who bore Rufus described as, | 26:58
a choice Christian. | 27:03
Who found time to treat Paul, as an adopted son. | 27:07
There are others, Julia, the sister of Nereus | 27:12
and of course, Phoebe the Deaconess, | 27:16
who carried this communication to somewhere. | 27:18
Rome or Ephesus is the scholarly guest, | 27:22
she carried it as a letter of introduction. | 27:27
Paul says of Phoebe, "she's been a help to many people, | 27:31
including myself". | 27:36
Now remember these nine persons. | 27:39
When someone comments that Paul | 27:43
had a low opinion of women. | 27:47
He had his problems with them. | 27:52
In the letter to the church, | 27:56
he loved the most, the one at Philippi. | 27:57
He writes, | 27:59 | |
"I entreat Euodia | 28:01
and I entreat Syntyche, | 28:04
to agree in the Lord. | 28:06
And you, my true comrade", not named | 28:10
"lend a hand to these women, | 28:14
I beg of you". | 28:17 | |
But note what Paul writes next. | 28:19
"They have fought". | 28:22
No, not with each other. | 28:25
"They have fought at my side | 28:28
in the active service of the gospel". | 28:31
Paul was not always consistent in his estimate of women. | 28:36
So what? | 28:41 | |
It merely proves that he was a man, that's all. | 28:43
He knew, | 28:48 | |
and we know, | 28:50 | |
that without women like them, | 28:52
there would have been no early church | 28:55
and therefore, no church. | 28:59
The second primer from this chapter in Romans | 29:03
is the addition to his praise of Aquila and Priscilla, | 29:07
who I quote, "risked their lives for me". | 29:11
Now where? | 29:16 | |
When? | 29:17 | |
How? | 29:18 | |
We don't know. | 29:20 | |
After thanking them, he adds further. | 29:22
"Give my love to the little church, | 29:25
that meets in their house". | 29:30
And in the opening words of the little letter to Philemon | 29:34
Paul dictates, "Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus | 29:38
and brother Timothy. | 29:43
To our beloved fellow worker Philemon, | 29:46
to our sister Afia", another woman. | 29:49
"To our fellow soldier, Archippus | 29:53
and to the church that meets in your house, | 29:56
grace and peace". | 30:01
And in Colossaens he writes, | 30:06
"salute the brothers at Laodicea, | 30:08
also Nympha" another woman | 30:13
"and the church which meets at her house". | 30:17
The church in their house, the church in your house, | 30:22
the church in her house, | 30:26
the early church was a house church. | 30:28
We know that also from archeological discoveries | 30:32
At Dura-Europos on the Euphrates, | 30:37
a Yale University team uncovered a house | 30:40
in which one of the rooms had been prepared for use, | 30:44
as a Christian Church. | 30:48
Wasn't until the third century, | 30:52
that there were separate church buildings. | 30:55
Now let's look at these two facts, | 30:59
women active in the church | 31:01
and the little house churches, | 31:04
both of which meant so much to St. Paul | 31:07
and find how they relate to this service of worship | 31:10
in the university chapel. | 31:14
The person whom we remember today | 31:18
was a woman. | 31:21 | |
More accurately, | 31:24
She was a perjink spunky little lady, | 31:25
who loved you. | 31:31 | |
In its many multifarious activities, | 31:34
football games, how she would've rejoiced yesterday | 31:37
and basketball games, | 31:41
concerts and plays, | 31:43
colleagues and students. | 31:45
She was a founding member of the women's auxiliary, | 31:47
in the hospital. | 31:51 | |
Her name is Mary Poston. | 31:54
She died almost 10 years ago on December 18th, 1961 | 31:57
and the funeral service was celebrated two days later, | 32:04
in this place. | 32:08 | |
Let me sketch something of her curriculum vitae. | 32:10
In 1922, she made application to John's Hopkins Hospital | 32:15
for a position as a secretary | 32:21
and was given a standard intelligence and aptitude test. | 32:24
Her performance exceeded the other candidates, | 32:31
by so great a margin, that it became subject of discussion | 32:35
in the doctor's dining room. | 32:42
Dr. Harold L Amos, then Associate Professor of Medicine | 32:45
at John's Hopkins. | 32:51
And later the first Professor of Medicine at Duke, | 32:53
decided to hire her as a bacteriologist, | 32:58
although she never had had a course in the subject. | 33:04
Three years later, when Dr. Amos came to duke in 1930, | 33:09
eight years later, | 33:16
he brought Mary Poston with him. | 33:17
Together they had already published three papers | 33:21
on Bruce and Lois. | 33:25
So Mary Poston was one of the original staff members | 33:28
of the Duke Medical Center. | 33:33
She taught generations of medical students, | 33:35
the fundamentals of bacteriology. | 33:39
Although she had neither a BS nor a BA Degree, | 33:43
she earned an MA Degree from Duke University in 1937. | 33:48
On the basis of a thesis on the Brucella group of organisms | 33:56
and a four hour oral examination | 34:02
in all phases of bacteriology and immunology. | 34:07
So independent study is no new thing at Duke, | 34:13
but I wonder if four hour oral examination for an MA, | 34:19
are still in order. | 34:25
She was held in such esteem and affection | 34:28
by the medical students that their yearbook in 1960, | 34:30
was dedicated to her. | 34:36
They still remember the generous heart, | 34:39
concealed behind a shy gruffness | 34:42
and the crusty facade which could not quite hide | 34:47
her love for her fellas. | 34:51
The chapel was her church. | 34:55
She was a member of the church group within the chapel | 34:58
and for years, was the communion stewardess, | 35:03
She loved this place. | 35:07
When she was sick and she was sick often, in her last years | 35:10
her primary desire was to get back to the university service | 35:16
of worship | 35:20 | |
and sit in the seat near the first pillar | 35:22
in front of the lactern. | 35:26
She openly and without embarrassment confessed her faith | 35:28
in a God who was truth and love. | 35:33
She gave us an example of conscience in action. | 35:36
Her eyes remain quiet, | 35:41
in her last days on earth. | 35:45
If she had been a member of the early church, | 35:50
Paul would have saluted her. | 35:54
Her sister, Miss Nany Poston of Baton Rouge | 35:59
has long wanted to honor her sister's memory. | 36:02
Today she worships with us | 36:07
and these candelebra, her generous gift, | 36:10
have been dedicated to the glory of God | 36:14
to the service of the chapel | 36:18
and in memory of her sister Mary, | 36:21
who liked the Mary in Romans, has worked hard for you. | 36:24
Now, this turn to the other primer, | 36:32
the church in your house. | 36:35
When I came here year in 1945. | 36:39
This was known, | 36:43 | |
as the Duke University Church Interdenominational. | 36:44
In time for reasons that are too long to go into, | 36:51
it became what it is today, | 36:55
the Duke University Chapel Interdenominational. | 36:58
But there was a group of faculty, | 37:03
administrative and staff members | 37:06
who wanted to continue their church membership here. | 37:10
And that was granted, | 37:15
In fact, the name Duke University Church Interdenominational | 37:17
is continued in and through them. | 37:22
Their two primary interests, | 37:27
so far as the chapel is concerned, | 37:28
have been the services of holy communion, | 37:32
which they take under their charge | 37:36
and the Edgemont Community Center, | 37:39
in which almost half their membership has served. | 37:44
But their main focus is the house church. | 37:50
Meeting once a month for Bible study, | 37:56
in one another's homes. | 38:00
There are 35 members, old medical school, library, | 38:03
dining hall, graduate school, all over. | 38:08
35 members and do you know what the average attendance is | 38:12
once a month for Bible study? | 38:15
27 | 38:17 | |
They too set aside a sum of money, | 38:21
to honor Mary Poston | 38:24
and it is their gift, which has given us the alter lactern | 38:27
upon which the great Bible will always rest open, | 38:32
except when it is being read in a service of worship. | 38:39
The table of the Lord, the altar, | 38:44
is a proper place for the open Bible. | 38:48
For it is the vehicle of the word of God, | 38:53
The record of his revelation in law, | 38:57
sacrifice | 39:02 | |
and sacrament. | 39:04 | |
This is not the first gift | 39:06
of the church group to this chapel, | 39:09
nor will it be the last | 39:12
and it is given to hold in remembrance | 39:16
their friend and fellow member | 39:19
and to furnish a proper appointment for the sanctuary | 39:22
and to further the ongoing proclamation | 39:28
of the good news, from this place. | 39:31
The church in the house, | 39:36
is still thriving | 39:39
in our community. | 39:42
Now, what about you who've come back to chapel | 39:46
on homecoming Sunday? | 39:48
We who stay at home are glad | 39:52
that you who are returning to Duke | 39:54
want to worship with us again. | 39:56
You can see how dependent the chapel is on women. | 40:00
Look at the number in the choir. | 40:06
And I think you'll find there's at least one | 40:11
among the collectors. | 40:14
The lessons are sometimes read in soprano | 40:17
or control to a voice. | 40:22
There are two chapel hostesses | 40:25
and the chapel hostess for so many years. | 40:29
Who in our time looked after 800 of the thousand weddings | 40:33
that took place here, | 40:36
is worshiping with us this morning. | 40:38
A woman will occupy this pulpit on November 7th | 40:41
Parents weekend | 40:46 | |
and names like Mary Duke Biddle | 40:49
and Mary Siemens | 40:51 | |
and Mildred Hendricks, organist for so many years | 40:54
and Virginia Gray, Assist Curator of Manuscripts | 40:59
in the library, whose death this past week | 41:04
has shocked and saddened us. | 41:09
They all come to mind. | 41:12
We want you alumnae and alumni too, | 41:15
to be mindful of the chapel, | 41:19
which you love enough to worship here. | 41:23
And you come back. | 41:26
If Frank with you, it's desperately in need of money | 41:28
for renovation and improvement, | 41:32
even for upkeep. | 41:35 | |
Moreover, the Edgemond Community Center, | 41:38
still looks primarily to the duke community | 41:42
for volunteer aid | 41:45
and to the chapel offerings for financial blood transfusion. | 41:47
Keep us in your memories and in your hearts | 41:55
and in your giving. | 41:59
But do not ignore the house churches on the campus. | 42:02
There is religious vitality in small groups right here | 42:07
over the fellowship of Christian athletes, canvas crusade | 42:12
Episcopal Eucharist, | 42:16
Baptist discussion group. | 42:18
The choir, which is not made up of performers | 42:21
and performeress', | 42:25
but is the ministry of music. | 42:28
I think of one group calling itself, Ichthus, | 42:35
which is the Greek word for a fish. | 42:39
Now why that word? | 42:44
I C H | 42:47 | |
T H | 42:49 | |
U S. | 42:50 | |
The, I stands for Yeezus, the Greek for Jesus, | 42:52
The T H for Theo, of God, | 42:57
C H for Christ, | 43:02 | |
The U for [Indistinct] son, | 43:04
the S for savior. | 43:07 | |
The young artist, | 43:12
who beat 400 pounds of steel into the candelebra. | 43:14
and the alter lectern, knew that. | 43:19
The fish shape, made with one line | 43:23
or sometimes, the fish's eye poked in. | 43:28
That was the early symbolic affirmation | 43:32
of the Christian faith, | 43:36
found in the catacombs to this day. | 43:39
Centuries before the cross, was the symbol. | 43:42
Now the body of the candelebra is fish like, | 43:49
three fish and the word ichthus, | 43:53
is pierce into the alter lactern. | 43:57
The artist who made them worships with us today. | 44:02
This seemingly modern design continues the early affirmation | 44:06
of our faith, | 44:11 | |
Jesus Christ, | 44:13 | |
Son of God, | 44:15 | |
Savior. | 44:17 | |
We're very fortunate at Duke, | 44:20
the great chapel is supplemented and complimented | 44:22
by numerous house churches. | 44:27
I hope this is true where you worship in your hometowns | 44:30
each needs the other | 44:37
and both need women | 44:41
and men. | 44:44 | |
Take some minutes this week to read Romans 16:1-16, | 44:47
leisurely and seriously. | 44:53
Think about people like Mary Poston and Virginia Gray | 44:57
about folk who are well known personally to you, | 45:03
say thank you to God for them. | 45:09
If they're still living, say thank you to them too. | 45:15
The grace of God is in courtesy. | 45:21
And so let's conclude this sermon | 45:26
by singing a hymn about the church, | 45:29
the large churches and the house churches. | 45:33
It is 294, "I love thy kingdom, Lord", | 45:36
the house of Thine Abode, | 45:41
I suppose that's really why we are here. | 45:43
