through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 12:03
Render your heart and not your garments, | 12:08

For God is gracious and merciful, | 12:14
slow to anger and of great kindness. | 12:18

- | May we listen for word from God | 24:00 |
through the reading of this morning scripture lesson. | 24:03
The first lesson this morning comes from the book of Isaiah, | 24:07
the 32nd chapter, the first through the third verses: | 24:11
behold, a king will reign in righteousness | 24:16
and princes will rule in justice. | 24:18
Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, | 24:21
a covered from the tempest, | 24:25
like streams of water in dry place, | 24:27
like the shade of a great rock in a weary land. | 24:30
Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed | 24:35
and the ears of those who hear will hearken. | 24:38
May all stand for the reading of the gospel. | 24:43
The gospel lesson this morning comes from the gospel | 24:55
according to Matthew, the 35th through the 40th verses: | 24:58
and one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question to test Him. | 25:02
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" | 25:06
And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, | 25:09
"with all your heart and with all your soul, | 25:13
"and with all your mind. | 25:16
"This is the great and first commandment. | 25:18
"And a second is like it. | 25:21
"You shall love your neighbor as yourself. | 25:23
"On these two commandments depend all the law | 25:26
"and the prophets." | 25:29

in this place, this week, tonight at 6:30, | 32:55
and Thursday evening at 5:15. | 32:59
This week, I was talking with an alumnus of Duke, | 33:04
who asked about Dr. Clellan, | 33:09
and said, "You know, I'm sure that that man has more friends | 33:15
"who have had some connection with Duke University | 33:23
"than anyone else who has ever been there." | 33:27
In the 30 years of ministry, which Jim Clellan, | 33:32
Dr. Clellan, Dean Clellan, | 33:36
your friend, my friend, | 33:39
a friend probably also to more people | 33:42
than anyone else this university has ever known, | 33:47
we welcome him as he celebrates | 33:52
and as we celebrate with him today, | 33:56
the 30th anniversary of the preaching | 33:59
of his first sermon in this chapel. | 34:02
It was September 16th, 1945. | 34:06
It's been a joyous ministry which he has shared; | 34:11
a ministry of love and compassion, | 34:17
a ministry of support and caring, and understanding. | 34:21
I don't need to say that though, | 34:27
because all of you both in this congregation | 34:28
and in many, many, many other places know it. | 34:32
I've wondered how might be an appropriate way | 34:35
to express some of our appreciation to Dr. Clellan; | 34:38
what that way might be. | 34:42
And I have thought and I guess I will do just as I often do; | 34:45
namely do as the spirit moves me. | 34:48
And so as he comes to preach with us, | 34:52
will you stand with me and give him a warm welcome | 34:54
to this service as he breaks God's word, | 34:57
the bread of life to us? | 35:00
Jim. | 35:02 | |
(congregation applauds)
- | Thank you, Bob, and thank you all. | 35:36 |
Saint Augustine said that when you hear a great sermon, | 35:42
you ought to applaud. | 35:46
But he never said anything about cheering before the sermon. | 35:48
(congregation chuckles) | 35:51
I'm grateful to all of you. | 35:54
They've been good years. | 35:58
I came to Duke for three years and stayed 30, | 36:02
discovering for myself that the difference | 36:09
between a groove and a grave is only a matter of death. | 36:12
(congregation chatter) | 36:18
And I mean it. | 36:20 | |
But thank you, and the grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ, | 36:24
be with you all. | 36:29 | |
Now, the first thing, of course, | 36:33
after Bob asked me to preach today, | 36:35
was to ask myself, "What should be my theme, my topic?" | 36:38
Then I decided, "Well, why not preach the same sermon | 36:43
"as 30 years ago?" | 36:47
So I checked the manuscript | 36:51
and found that I had already preached it again. | 36:54
(congregation laughs) | 36:58
On September 3, 1972, to the freshman class of 1976, | 36:59
some of whom may be here. | 37:06
So that was up. | 37:09 | |
Then I thought I might analyze the sermon | 37:11
to show how my theology, my faith has changed in 30 years, | 37:15
but it hasn't, not radically. | 37:22
I'm still a Presbyterian, which in practice means | 37:27
that I'm either an Old Testament Christian | 37:31
or a New Testament Jew. | 37:35
(congregation laughs) | 37:38
Perhaps I'm a hybrid, why not? | 37:40
Judaism and Christianity have much in common, | 37:45
more than many of us are willing to grant. | 37:50
I'm grateful, Bob, and I should say it | 37:57
that you did mention Mrs. Clellan | 37:58
in that wonderful paragraph; | 38:01
untrue, but wonderful, in the bulletin. | 38:05
She's the one who with patience and encouragement | 38:09
has kept me going at Duke for 30 years | 38:14
and for 13 years before that | 38:17
at Amherst College in New England. | 38:20
She is my Alice, and I'm grateful. | 38:24
My mother's only objection to my marrying her | 38:31
was when she said it frankly, | 38:34
"The girl is too good for you." | 38:37
(congregation laughs) | 38:41
I said, "That is what a mother-in-law says. | 38:43
"There's no use of you both being against me." | 38:47
Well, let me talk with you about the Christian faith | 38:52
as I understand it, | 38:55
under three headings and with a conclusion of application. | 38:56
First, the spirit of the Christian faith is love. | 39:02
The spirit of the Christian faith is love. | 39:08
Now, what do we mean by spirit? | 39:12
The life principle, the guiding principle, | 39:14
the key element. | 39:19 | |
And that life principle is loved | 39:22
because God is assumed and affirmed to be loved. | 39:25
Now, that is true for the Old Testament | 39:32
as well as for the New. | 39:36
Now, what kind of love is this love? | 39:40
It is benevolence rather than affection. | 39:44
Jesus commanded his followers to love their enemies. | 39:50
He never suggested that they like their enemies. | 39:55
Now, such love shows itself in our respect for God, | 40:02
in a tolerance for the views of other Christians | 40:09
and for our Jewish kin, | 40:13
and for yet others in ever widening circles. | 40:15
You see, God loves us, though we're unworthy. | 40:23
His favor is not something we deserve. | 40:29
His favor is an act of grace, a gracious act. | 40:35
That is how in gratitude to Him, | 40:42
we should behave to others, all others. | 40:45
But particularly and inevitably to those | 40:51
of the household of faith. | 40:55
It is a matter of fact that many of us | 40:58
who do worship regularly here, do behave in love. | 41:01
I know it, I've watched it, | 41:07
I'm grateful for it. | 41:10
We are grateful to God (indistinct). | 41:13
And they live as His sons and His daughters | 41:16
who seek to reveal to others that love. | 41:19
Second, the heart of the Christian faith is peace. | 41:25
The heart of the Christian faith is peace. | 41:33
What is peace? | 41:37 | |
Harmony within ourselves, | 41:39
harmony in our relation with our fellows. | 41:44
Peace is poise, poise. | 41:48
Like the behavior of a good quarterback | 41:53
when chaos seems to surround and engulf him. | 41:56
John Buchan in his autobiography says | 42:03
that peace is that state | 42:06
in which fear of any kind is unknown. | 42:10
Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown. | 42:16
Peace is not so much the absence of something, | 42:21
but the presence of something or someone, | 42:24
and that should result in inner (indistinct). | 42:29
Let me give you a for instance. | 42:33
From the First World War in the grim days of trench warfare, | 42:35
a chaplain is talking to some of his men | 42:42
whom is going to accompany across no man's land. | 42:45
He speaks quietly. | 42:51
Remember three things: if we live, it's victory. | 42:54
If we are wounded, it's blighty; the Cockney name for home. | 43:03
If we are killed, it's the resurrection. | 43:12
That's quiet, pepped up, | 43:18
with a British flare for underemphasis. | 43:21
But for some of his heroes, | 43:25
it meant peace at the heart. | 43:28
Let me give you a for instance on the New Testament | 43:32
where Paul is writing to his favorite church at Philippi: | 43:34
"I have learned in whatsoever state I am, | 43:39
"therewith to be content. | 43:44
"The God revealed in Jesus," stated Paul, | 43:51
"He was not unacquainted with peace at the heart, | 43:55
"a continuing contentment." | 43:58
The heart of our faith then is peace, poise. | 44:02
Third, the blessing of the Christian faith is joy. | 44:09
The blessing of the Christian faith is joy. | 44:15
Here are some synonyms: beatitude, bliss, delight, | 44:17
exultation, happiness, satisfaction. | 44:22
That is what Jesus promised His disciples, His pupils. | 44:26
But it is the promise of all great religion. | 44:32
Here is a Hindu swami speaking: | 44:39
"The first sign of your becoming religious | 44:42
"is that you are becoming (indistinct)." | 44:47
The noun, joy, is found 164 times in the Bible. | 44:52
The verb, rejoice, is found 191 times. | 44:58
And Billy Graham... | 45:02
No stop, and Billy Sunday, | 45:04
the evangelist who I think was a baseball player, | 45:09
back in 1914, said in a sermon, | 45:13
"The trouble with many folk is that they've got | 45:16
"just enough religion to make them miserable. | 45:21
"If there is not joy in your religion, | 45:27
"you've got a leak in your religion." | 45:31
Really Sunday. | 45:34 | |
Here is a Scottish, for instance. | 45:37
In Trinity College, one of the two divinity halls | 45:40
at Glasgow University, there was a professor, an able one, | 45:45
who always made me think of Cassius | 45:51
in Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." | 45:54
Cassius, who had a lean and hungry look. | 45:57
At times though, it was worse than that. | 46:04
Then the professor's face looked like the edge of a hatchet, | 46:08
dipped in vinegar. | 46:12
He was literally a sour puss. | 46:17
One day he stopped by an open air Salvation Army meeting | 46:23
in an act of ecumenicity. | 46:28
A Cockney girl, Salvationist, said to him, | 46:31
"Are you a Christian?" | 46:35
He answered, "Lassie, of course, I'm a Christian." | 46:37
And she responded, "Gorblimey," | 46:43
which is God blind me. | 46:47
"Gorblimey, what a face for a Christian!" | 46:49
Gorblimey, Webster says, is an exclamation expressing | 46:57
surprise and perplexity. | 47:01
She couldn't understand | 47:05
how any Christian could look like that. | 47:06
Well, the professor told the story against himself | 47:10
with a twinkle. | 47:13 | |
But it makes one appreciate the little (indistinct) prayer: | 47:16
Oh, God, make all the bad people good, | 47:19
and all the good people, nice. | 47:22
For the blessing of our faith is supposed to be joy. | 47:26
Love, peace, and joy; three keywords in the Christian faith. | 47:31
Now, one aim of a sermon based upon the Bible should be | 47:38
to keep in constant juxtaposition, two complementary facts. | 47:42
First, the word of God as it had revealed in scripture, | 47:47
in the hymns and anthems of the church, | 47:53
in the lives of the saints, on the one hand. | 47:56
And second, the contemporary world, | 48:00
the real world to quote the chronicle, on the other hand. | 48:04
Is Jesus in agreement with these three words chosen | 48:10
as basic in the faith? | 48:15
What does He say about love? | 48:17
Well, listen, he's answering a Pharisaic lawyer | 48:19
who's asked him, "Which is the greatest commandment | 48:23
"in the law?" | 48:26 | |
Jesus said to him, "Thou shall love the Lord, thy God, | 48:29
"with all thy heart, with all thy mind, | 48:31
"with all thy soul, and with all thy strength. | 48:34
"This is the first and great commandment." | 48:37
But Jesus is a great believer in the one-two punch, | 48:41
especially the two, so He adds, | 48:44
"And the second is like unto it; | 48:46
"thou shall love thy neighbor as thy self." | 48:50
He never tells us to love ourselves. | 48:54
He assumes it, just assumes it. | 48:57
Part of being a human being; you love yourself. | 49:00
And then Jesus would tie that great statement | 49:05
with a parable like "The Good Samaritan," | 49:10
which must have made his Jewish haters mad. | 49:14
What'd he say about peace? | 49:20
He's trying to study the inner group of disciples. | 49:22
He says, "Peace, I leave with you, | 49:24
"my peace, I give unto you; | 49:29
"not as the world giveth, give I unto you. | 49:31
"Let not your heart be troubled, | 49:35
"neither let it be afraid." | 49:38
And he acted out what He taught. | 49:42
What did he say about joy? | 49:47
"These things I've spoken unto you | 49:50
"that my joy might remain in you | 49:53
"and that your joy might be full." | 49:57
And so His enemies accused Him of being a glutton | 50:03
and a drunkard, a winebibber. | 50:09
And if ever He denied it, | 50:15
the word now ever came down through the evangelists. | 50:17
Now, there is a word from God made up of three words. | 50:23
They're central in the good news, the gospel, | 50:28
but what about the contemporary situation? | 50:31
Well, when I was at Amherst, | 50:34
there was a fraternity which elected as its president, | 50:38
the mildest, gentlest, quietest member | 50:43
of the rising senior class. | 50:49
It seemed to me a strange choice for a fraternity | 50:52
which was not known for its decorum. | 50:57
I asked a member the why of their choice. | 51:03
He admitted that this unusual selection did not smoke | 51:07
or drink or raise even the mildest hell, but... | 51:11
And it was the but which elected him unanimously. | 51:18
But he said to me, "He puts the drunks to bed." | 51:22
(congregation chatter) | 51:29
Now, that is goodwill, love in action. | 51:33
(congregation laughs) | 51:37
Which resulted in a measure of peace | 51:40
and some joy in the fraternity. | 51:42
Let me come nearer home. | 51:47
Some years ago, I entered the Duke Hospital, | 51:50
bleeding profusely from a long cherished ulcer | 51:54
which decided to let rip. | 51:58
A call went out to the Divinity School | 52:02
for seven pints of blood. | 52:05
Seven students came to the blood bank. | 52:08
I discovered their names and found to my embarrassment | 52:12
that I didn't particularly like two of them. | 52:18
Then it dawned in me | 52:24
that they probably didn't like me either. | 52:25
But liking was not involved in the transaction. | 52:30
A member of the beloved community was in need | 52:35
and seven responded in love, goodwill, and I benefited. | 52:40
The gospel is not really grasped | 52:49
until it is experienced in a contemporary situation. | 52:52
What a revolution that'd be on this campus | 52:58
if we who worship in the chapel learned | 53:02
from all the different parts of the service | 53:06
what our faith really is; | 53:09
widening and deepening from one Lord's day to another, | 53:13
and then expressing itself on the other days of the week | 53:18
in love, peace, and joy. | 53:22
For as G.K. Chesterton, the great Roman Catholic layman said | 53:26
way back in 1910: | 53:30 | |
"The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting, | 53:33
"it has been found difficult and not tried. | 53:42
