Hear the reading from the eighth chapter of Acts: | 8:03
But an angel of the Lord said to Philip, | 8:07
"Rise and go toward the south | 8:11
to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." | 8:13
This is a desert place. | 8:17
And he rose and went. | 8:19
And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, | 8:21
a minister of Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, | 8:24
in charge of all her treasure, | 8:28
had come to Jerusalem to worship | 8:31
and was returning, seated in his chariot, | 8:34
he was reading the prophet Isaiah. | 8:38
And the Spirit said to Philip, | 8:41
"Go over and join this chariot." | 8:43
So Philip ran to him | 8:46
and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, | 8:48
"Do you understand what you are reading?" | 8:53
And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" | 8:56
And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. | 9:01
Now the passage of the Scripture | 9:05
which he was reading was this: | 9:07
"As a sheep led to the slaughter | 9:10
or a lamb before its shearer is dumb, | 9:12
so he opens not his mouth. | 9:16
In his humiliation justice was denied him. | 9:19
Who can describe his generation? | 9:24
For his life is taken up from the earth." | 9:26
And the eunuch said to Philip, | 9:30
"About whom, pray, does the prophet say this, | 9:33
about himself or about some one else?" | 9:36
Then Philip opened his mouth, | 9:40
and beginning with this scripture | 9:42
he told him the good news of Jesus. | 9:44
And as they went along the road they came to some water, | 9:48
and the eunuch said, "See, here is water! | 9:51
What is to prevent my being baptized?" | 9:54
And he commanded the chariot to stop, | 9:57
and they both went down into the water, | 10:00
Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. | 10:02
Let us stand for the gospel reading. | 10:08
Gospel reading from the 24th chapter, | 10:13
the gospel according to of St. Luke. | 10:15
And he said to them, "O foolish men, | 10:24
and slow of heart to believe | 10:27
all that the prophets have spoken! | 10:29
Was it not necessary | 10:31
that the Christ should suffer these things | 10:33
and enter into his glory?" | 10:36
And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, | 10:38
he interpreted to them in all the scriptures | 10:42
the things concerning himself. | 10:44
So they drew near to the village to which they were going. | 10:47
He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, | 10:51
saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening | 10:55
and the day is now far spent." | 10:59
So he went in to stay with them. | 11:02
When he was at table with them, | 11:06
he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, | 11:08
and gave it to them. | 11:13
And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; | 11:15
and he vanished out of their sight. | 11:20
They said to each other, | 11:23
"Did not our hearts burn within us | 11:25
while he talked to us on the road, | 11:27
while he opened to us the scriptures?" | 11:30
And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; | 11:33
and they found the eleven gathered there | 11:38
and those who were with them, who said, | 11:40
"The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" | 11:43
Then they told what had happened on the road, | 11:48

Words taken from the gospel of St. Luke 24:35. | 12:59
In the name of the Father and of the Son | 13:07
and of the Holy Spirit. | 13:08
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, | 13:12
among the gospel storytellers, | 13:17
it is Luke who is the consummate deft artist. | 13:20
He knows how to develop a story. | 13:27
The evidence is found not only in the concreteness | 13:31
of his gospel narrative, but also in the vignettes | 13:35
scattered in the acts of the apostles, | 13:40
such as the story of the Ethiopian eunuch baptized by Philip | 13:44
which we have just heard, or the scene of Paul's address | 13:49
to the elders at Miletus, or of the shipwreck at Malta. | 13:54
The beauty of the Emmaus story which we have just heard | 14:01
lies in the unexpected. | 14:06
Jesus appears to Cleopas and the unnamed disciple | 14:10
on the road to Emmaus, but they don't recognize him. | 14:13
It is unexpected that a resident in Jerusalem | 14:19
should be ignorant of the events of the last three days. | 14:23
So they detail these for him. | 14:27
"We were hoping," they say, "that he was the one | 14:30
who would set Israel free." | 14:35
It is unexpected that the stranger scolds them. | 14:40
"How slow are you to believe? | 14:45
Did not the Christ have to undergo this?" | 14:49
Perhaps it is not unexpected | 14:55
that they should press Jesus to stay with them | 14:57
once they reached Emmaus. | 15:00
After all, this stranger was an engrossing companion. | 15:03
But the most unexpected of all that follows | 15:08
in the Terce description of the breaking of the bread. | 15:11
When he had seated himself with them to eat, | 15:16
he took bread, pronounced the blessing, | 15:20
then broke the bread and distribute it to them. | 15:25
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, | 15:31
whereupon he vanished from their sight. | 15:35
Students of the Bible remain divided over whether or not | 15:41
this meal was a Eucharistic liturgy or a simple repast. | 15:45
The question cannot be solved | 15:52
if we think of Cleopas as the narrator. | 15:54
Would he have heard of the last supper, | 16:00
that event, which triggered the hectic goings on | 16:04
of the last three days? | 16:09
Hardly. | 16:12 | |
But if Luke is the narrator, and he is, | 16:15
what then, what is Luke trying to say | 16:20
about the breaking of the bread? | 16:25
First, we should note the old liturgical formula | 16:31
that appears not only here but in all the gospel reports | 16:34
of the Last Supper: | 16:37
taking bread and giving thanks he broke it | 16:39
and gave it to them. | 16:42
And there is the telling comment of Luke | 16:44
that precisely then their eyes were opened | 16:48
and they recognized him. | 16:52
And they are described as telling the story later | 16:55
to the apostles, "how they had come to know him | 16:58
in the breaking of the bread." | 17:02
The breaking of the bread. | 17:07
That's the phrase Luke uses in the second chapter of Acts | 17:12
about the early Christians. | 17:15
"They devoted themselves," he writes, | 17:18
"to the apostles' instruction and the communal life, | 17:21
to the breaking of bread and the prayers." | 17:26
The phrase breaking of the bread makes no sense | 17:31
in such a context, | 17:35
unless it refers to the Christian celebration | 17:38
of the Eucharistic mystery. | 17:41
Luke uses the phrase again in the 20th chapter of Acts, | 17:45
where he also tells the story | 17:51
about how Paul talked on and on | 17:53
to a youth named Eutychus perched on a window cell | 17:57
became drowsier and drowsier | 18:02
and finally fell out the window. | 18:06
The story has introduced us: "On the first day of the week | 18:09
when we gathered for the breaking of the bread." | 18:14
Again, the phrase seems to designate the Christian Eucharist | 18:18
which came to mark the Lord's day, | 18:22
the first day of the week. | 18:25
I mentioned at the outset another narrative by Luke, | 18:29
the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch by Philip. | 18:32
There is a certain parallel between this | 18:36
and the Emmaus story. | 18:39
In both cases, the story culminates in a sacrament. | 18:41
Baptism for the Ethiopian, | 18:47
the breaking of bread for the two disciples. | 18:50
In both cases the explaining of the scriptures is an issue. | 18:54
Philip's lesson to the Ethiopian and Jesus' lecture | 19:01
to the two disciples who describe it in that great line, | 19:06
"were not our heart burning inside us as he talked to us | 19:11
on the road and explained the scriptures to us?" | 19:16
Can we not find in these narratives of Luke | 19:22
an important lesson? | 19:26
The scriptures lead to Christ, | 19:30
Word and sacraments belong together. | 19:33
And this is the risen Christ, the Christ who lives, | 19:39
who is present to us in the Eucharist. | 19:43
As we continue with the celebration of the Eucharist today, | 19:49
let us do so in the spirit of Cleopas and his companion. | 19:54
