Priest | On this holy Maundy Thursday, | 6:30 |
when Christians throughout the world | 6:35
will gather to commemorate and to celebrate | 6:40
the Last Supper of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, | 6:45
it is fitting that we share in a service | 6:50
that Christians around the world have used. | 6:52
And for that reason, we have chosen tonight | 6:56
to have the service which was used | 6:59
at the recent meeting | 7:02
of the Fifth Assembly of the World Council of Churches. | 7:04
There are some changes, | 7:08
but I invite you to join | 7:11
with whole spirit and heart and mind | 7:13
as we share together | 7:17
in this most meaningful | 7:19
and rich liturgy. | 7:21 | |
The old order is passing away. | 7:25
Your new order, God, has already begun, | 7:28
and we are numbered among its signs. | 7:32
Through Your Spirit, in our hearts, | 7:36
You set us free and taught us to call You parent. | 7:38
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 7:43
You have opened our eyes, | 7:48
given us hope that we shall live | 7:51
in the glorious liberty of the children of God, | 7:53
but not alone. | 7:56 | |
Not while others remain poor, broken-hearted, imprisoned, | 7:58
blind, and bruised yet. | 8:04
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 8:09
So, God, | 8:14 | |
we pray for our brothers and sisters, | 8:17
Your family, oppressed by ignorance and poverty | 8:20
caught in a web of injustice and apathy, | 8:24
cut off from one another by language, culture, color, | 8:28
class, creed, and sex. | 8:33
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 8:36
Through education, | 8:42
may the powerless be led to self-discovery, | 8:43
the despised find new dignity, | 8:47
the dispossessed be enabled to claim their place | 8:50
in the community of free people. | 8:53
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 8:57
Give to your church, | 9:02
a vision of a total liberation of humanity, | 9:03
grant us the wisdom to hear the voice of the foolish | 9:07
of the world. The strength of the weak, | 9:10
that through those who are nothing, | 9:14
we may understand the word of Christ. | 9:16
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 9:20
But we tend to love darkness, rather than light. | 9:25
We shrink from the responsibility of freedom, | 9:29
the uncertainty of the desert, the conflict of the cross. | 9:33
We keep turning back, preferring the security of slavery | 9:38
to the adventure of The Promised Land. | 9:42
(congregation murmurs indistinctly) | 9:47
Call us, Lord Jesus Christ, that we may follow. | 9:50
May we follow you, not only as one who goes ahead, | 9:55
but as one who journeys with us. | 9:58
Lord Jesus Christ, freeing us, uniting us. | 10:01
Let us be content to learn the meaning of your way | 10:06
as we walk in it. | 10:11 | |
Amen. | 10:13 | |
God is faithful and just. | 10:34
And as many as confessed their sins, | 10:39
His faithfulness and justice | 10:43
will forgive, cleanse and make new. | 10:46
And so sisters and brothers in the name of Christ, | 10:52
I declare our sins are forgiven | 10:58
for Christ's sake. | 11:03

of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, | 13:56

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things | 14:04
