- | Grace and peace to you from God our Father | 2:21 |
and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 2:24
- | Amen. | 2:26 |
- | The risen Christ is with us. | 2:28 |
- | Praise the Lord. | 2:30 |
- | When we gather to praise God, we remember that | 2:33 |
we are his people who have preferred our wills to his, | 2:36
accepting his power to become new persons in Christ. | 2:40
Let us confess our sin before God and one another. | 2:44
Eternal Father, we confess that often | 2:48
we have failed to be an obedient church. | 2:52
We have not done your will. | 2:55
We have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love. | 2:57
We have not loved our neighbors. | 3:02
We have not heard the cry of the needy. | 3:05
Forgive us we pray, free us for joyful obedience | 3:08
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 3:13
Amen. | 3:16 | |
Hear the good news, Christ died for us | 3:28
while we were yet sinners. | 3:31
That is God's own proof of his love toward us. | 3:33
In the name of Jesus Christ you are forgiven. | 3:37
- | In the name of Jesus Christ, glory to God, amen. | 3:41 |
- | Let us remain standing through the reading of the gospel. | 3:50 |
(muffled hymnal singing) | 3:56
Let us pray. | 4:43 | |
Lord, open our hearts and our minds through | 4:49
your Holy Spirit so that this scripture | 4:56
that we were about to hear and this word | 5:04
which is about to be proclaimed will be met | 5:09
with joy receptance of your word to us on this day. | 5:15
Amen. | 5:24 | |
Reading from the Gospel of Matthew 20:29-34. | 5:29
And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him | 5:42
and behold two blind men sitting by the roadside, | 5:50
when they heard that Jesus was passing by | 5:55
cried out, "Have mercy on us, oh, son of David." | 6:00
The crowd rebuked them telling them to be silent, | 6:07
but they cried out the more, | 6:13
"Lord, have mercy on us son of David." | 6:16
And Jesus stopped and call them saying, | 6:22
"What do you want me to do for you?" | 6:26
They said to him, "Lord, let our eyes be opened." | 6:33
And Jesus in pity touched their eyes and immediately | 6:40
they received their sight and followed him. | 6:46
Here ends the reading you may be seated. | 6:51
- | The gospel that you have heard is the story of two men | 7:08 |
who found their way to a miracle and the people | 7:14
who tried to stand in their way to prevent them | 7:18
from being encountered by the Lord of life. | 7:27
You are standing now on the threshold of a moment | 7:32
in your personal history, which is pregnant | 7:35
with possibilities, a miracle is waiting for you | 7:39
and they're all those many of whom are well-intentioned | 7:46
who will stand in your way. | 7:50
You may be waiting as those two men were, | 7:54
but miss the chance when it comes | 7:57
or you may be waiting and become discouraged and give up. | 8:00
Or you may think that you do not have enough faith | 8:06
to offer to God or you may be afraid | 8:08
to go to God with a great request, | 8:12
but the miracle is waiting. | 8:16
These two men were waiting, | 8:20
they had heard of the power of Jesus | 8:22
and they wondered if that power might | 8:26
not be exercised for them. | 8:28
Jesus was passing by, if they let him pass | 8:31
their chance might be gone forever. | 8:36
To let Jesus pass when he promises light | 8:41
is to accept the life of blindness. | 8:45
There are some things which have to be done | 8:48
at the moment or they will not get done at all. | 8:50
When the men heard Jesus approaching, | 8:55
they cried out, have mercy on us, O Lord thou, son of David, | 8:57
the people in the crowd nearest to them, | 9:04
angrily admonished them, "Keep quiet, he does not | 9:07
have time for the likes of you." | 9:13
But they cried out all the more, | 9:16
"Have mercy on us, oh Lord, thou son of David." | 9:19
There were once two men who lived on the King's highway. | 9:26
One was poor and the other was rich. | 9:31
The poor man lived by the work on his own hands, | 9:34
while the rich man lived by the work of other men's hands. | 9:38
One day a messenger came bidding each man | 9:43
to prepare to receive the king who was coming that way. | 9:46
And on his journey he wanted a chapel or a temple | 9:53
in which to worship. | 9:57
The rich man looked out the window of his house, | 9:59
he could see the great road winding away on the distance | 10:03
for he lived at the top of the hill overlooking the valley | 10:07
above the polluted air. | 10:11
He saw the poor man at the foot of the hill | 10:14
in his wretched cottage. | 10:20
I wonder, he said to himself, what a poor creature | 10:23
such as he can do to receive a king. | 10:27
With all my wealth and slaves I can build a temple | 10:31
such as men have never seen, what can that fellow do? | 10:35
Whatever he does will be worse than useless. | 10:41
So the rich man began to build, his slaves toiled | 10:46
all day long and far into the nights | 10:50
til the vast temple arose on the top of the hill. | 10:53
The gates were of gold and a great dome was starred | 10:57
with costly gems while the massive pillars | 11:00
were cased in silver. | 11:03
Floor and walls were white marble | 11:05
In the center of the temple stood a throne | 11:08
cushioned with soft pricey velvet | 11:10
and studded with diamond. | 11:14
Beneath the arched roof and between the pillows, | 11:16
golden censors were hanging in which costly incense burned. | 11:20
When it was finished | 11:25
the rich man rubbed his hands with glee. | 11:26
He said to himself nothing can compare with this | 11:29
in the whole wide world. | 11:33
Meanwhile, the poor man had purchased bricks and timber | 11:35
with his hard earned savings. | 11:38
He went without food in order to have money | 11:41
to spend on his simple chapel. | 11:43
All day he was out toiling for his living, | 11:46
then half the night sometimes the whole night | 11:50
he worked at his little chapel. | 11:53
At last it was finished, it was quite unadorned | 11:56
and lowly within the walls were whitewash | 11:59
and the wooden floor simple, but spotlessly clean. | 12:03
There was a small table covered with a plain | 12:07
crimson cloth for an altar, a chair the best one he had | 12:09
out of his house, a wood though careful curved cross | 12:15
up on the table, two metal candle sticks | 12:20
holding wax candles. | 12:22
It was simple, but it was all he had. | 12:24
When the rich man saw the small chapel | 12:28
with a poor man he laughed aloud. | 12:30
Poor fool, he cried, does he think a king | 12:32
would enter there? | 12:35
When the poor man saw the marble temple on the hilltop | 12:37
his heart sank and he said to himself, | 12:40
the king will never enter here. | 12:43
At last the day came, the rich man richly dressed | 12:46
stood on the steps of the temple waiting. | 12:52
With him a choir of singers waited | 12:55
to chant the welcome to the king. | 12:58
As the rich man stood waiting impatiently, | 13:01
he uttered uneasily to himself, he would never pass me by | 13:06
it would be an insult to my generosity to go elsewhere. | 13:10
But then he comforted himself by saying, | 13:14
there is nowhere else and he laughed again | 13:17
as he thought of the poor man's chapel. | 13:20
All day he waited, but the king did not come. | 13:23
As the day was ending a great storm | 13:26
burst upon the hillside lightning flashed | 13:28
and thunder rolled, suddenly the temper was struck. | 13:31
The walls tottered on the earth shook | 13:35
and the temple fell in ruins. | 13:38
But the poor man's chapel was unharmed. | 13:41
Early that morning he had entered that chapel | 13:44
and knelt before the altar, | 13:46
I dare not hope for thy coming, he prayed. | 13:48
This house is too simple and lowly, | 13:52
it is unfit for thy glory, | 13:55
the heart that planned it is sinful. | 13:56
The hands that made it are stained and soiled | 13:59
yet it is all that I have. | 14:02
Take it, enter it or leave it, it is thine. | 14:05
Then as the storm broke up on the hill on the side | 14:11
a sudden light filled the shrine, | 14:13
the poor man dared not look up, | 14:15
but he felt the royal presence there, | 14:17
a voice then spoke to him. | 14:19
I have seen all thy love and sacrifice. | 14:22
I have seen all thy tears and heard thy prayer, | 14:25
lo, I am with you always, the voice ceased, | 14:29
the light faded, but the poor man's heart was glad | 14:33
with the presence of the king. | 14:37
A miracle is waiting for you. | 14:40
He shows strength with his arms, | 14:44
he scatters the proud in the imagination of their hearts | 14:47
and exalts those of low degree. | 14:50
He feels the hungry with good things | 14:53
and the rich he sends empty away. | 14:55
My soul magnifies the Lord for he who is mighty | 14:58
hath done great things. | 15:01
Holy is his name. | 15:06 | |
Have mercy on us. | 15:10 | |
Oh Lord thou son of David. | 15:12
The people told the two man that they were making | 15:15
a nuisance of themselves, then perhaps some began | 15:17
to threaten them. | 15:21
"If you don't keep quiet, we will give you no more alms | 15:23
if you don't stop interrupting things, | 15:28
we will not lead you by their hand anymore | 15:30
to where you want to go if you don't shut up, | 15:33
we will not help you anymore." | 15:36
Listen well to those voices for you will | 15:38
hear them again. | 15:40 | |
Maybe this year, next year or the following year. | 15:42
Some well intentioned district superintendent, | 15:46
some well-intentioned Bishop, | 15:48
some well intentioned chairman of a committee | 15:50
will tell you to be quiet. | 15:54
Maybe from a moments when these threats struck home, | 15:56
the two men turned to each other to debate among themselves | 16:00
trying to decide upon the best course of action to take. | 16:04
One might've said to the other if we don't keep quiet, | 16:09
maybe they won't help us anymore, | 16:11
maybe we just do what they suggest. | 16:14
The other might've answered, but if we're quiet | 16:18
Jesus might not see us. | 16:20
If he doesn't hear us, he might pass us by. | 16:23
But the first one said, "Yes, but what if we risk | 16:27
what we have now?" | 16:29
The favor of the people, the pity of those who give us alms | 16:31
and who lead us by the hand and then Jesus doesn't help us. | 16:35
Can we afford to risk everything we have now | 16:40
in the hope that Jesus can and will help us?" | 16:44
You will hear those voices. | 16:49
They will say, don't rock the boat. | 16:54
Hold on to what you have in order that you may progress | 16:57
that you might go along in order to get along. | 17:02
But his friend answered, "Yes, we must risk everything | 17:06
we have now for if Jesus hears us, if Jesus helps us, | 17:10
if Jesus opens our eyes and gives us our sight, | 17:16
we will no longer be dependent on anyone | 17:21
to give us any alms. | 17:24
We will no longer need anyone to lead us by their hand, | 17:26
we will no longer need to be beggars. | 17:30
This is a moment of sight or blindness, | 17:36
we can't let anything stop us. | 17:39
Have mercy on us Lord, thou son of David." | 17:42
A miracle is waiting for you. | 17:46
You are going out into churches and into a society | 17:50
which no longer believes that miracles can happen. | 17:53
We are like men and women lost, left to perish | 17:57
in the middle of the desert. | 18:00
Rays of the sun burn with pitiless | 18:03
into our throbbing brains. | 18:05
The hot air seems like a blast from the mouth of furnace, | 18:07
the immeasurable waste of sand blows | 18:11
and quivers around us. | 18:13
Is it that the rest and upon an ocean of flame, | 18:15
there is no living thing in sight, no way of escape | 18:18
from that fallacy of desolation. | 18:21
Hope is swallowed up in anguish and despair. | 18:23
Hardened with thirst and pain | 18:27
we are ready to choose death rather than life. | 18:28
We are impatient that death is so slow coming. | 18:32
Suddenly, suddenly a miracle is waiting. | 18:36
Suddenly there appears before us a being of radiant | 18:40
and celestial beauty. | 18:43
He looks upon us with such tenderness and compassion | 18:45
as a mother feels for her dying children. | 18:48
Something about him tells us that a miracle is waiting. | 18:51
He touches the desert of our lives with his finger | 18:56
and the living fountain breaks forth at his feet. | 18:58
With a voice that seems to shake the very foundations | 19:04
of our souls, with unbearable ecstasy | 19:07
he says, come and drink and live. | 19:09
But it seems so like a dream. | 19:14
If it is real, why doesn't he press the cooling cups | 19:17
to our lips without any effort on our parts. | 19:19
But the miracle is waiting. | 19:23
If you want to drink and live, | 19:25
you have to go on the little strength and the little faith | 19:28
that you have for the miracle to happen to you. | 19:30
For a miracle is waiting. | 19:34
Finally, doubting and half believing, | 19:37
we stumble in our blindness, groping in the dark | 19:39
towards the sound of his voice. | 19:42
Crying out with those two men have mercy on us, | 19:44
oh Lord, thou son of David. | 19:47
Doubting and half believing we bow to drink | 19:50
of the fountain, our strength is revived, | 19:52
our win and reason is restored. | 19:55
Our lost hope returns. | 19:57
Again, we hear his voice, now that your sight is restored, | 20:00
follow me to a land that is fairer than day. | 20:05
Again, we hear his voice rise up and follow me | 20:09
and I will give you to drink of the river | 20:13
of the water of life. | 20:15
I will lead you forth from this burning | 20:17
and cheerless waste. | 20:20
I will bring you to a home where you | 20:22
shall neither hunger nor thirsty anymore. | 20:24
Where all pain and sorrow and death shall cease, | 20:27
God shall wipe all tears from your eyes. | 20:31
We look the way the deliverer points | 20:35
through the quivering haze and the elusive mirage | 20:37
of the desert we see faint outlines of a glorious city afar. | 20:40
Have mercy on us oh Lord thou son of David. | 20:45
These two men had an imperfect faith. | 20:50
They saw through a glass darkly. | 20:54
But they were willing to act on the faith they had. | 20:57
They were not afraid to bring a great request. | 21:00
We do not want alms. | 21:04
We do not want to be led by the hand. | 21:06
We do not want to be comfortable. | 21:09
We want to be able to see so that the reality | 21:12
that we perceive we'll bear some resemblance | 21:16
to what actually exists. | 21:19
They would beg us, but not for silver or gold, | 21:22
they wanted their sight and there was | 21:24
a miracle waiting for them. | 21:26
If you can believe that a miracle is waiting for you, | 21:29
no one will be able to threaten you | 21:33
into a silent acceptance of the status quo. | 21:35
If you can believe that a miracle is waiting for you, | 21:38
then your imaginations will not remain dolled | 21:43
by the inertia of the status quo. | 21:46
Miracles still happen. | 21:49
Some of you today by your very presence in this place, | 21:53
are living Testament to the fact that miracles still happen. | 21:57
Have have mercy on us oh Lord thou son of David. | 22:02
My very presence here is a miracle you see. | 22:07
Cause I know that I would not be here | 22:11
were it not for the grace and the mercy of God. | 22:15
This place today would not be what it is, | 22:18
the variety of graduates that we have today | 22:21
would not be what they are had a miracle | 22:24
not been waiting for some of us. | 22:27
And I think about 20, 25 years ago | 22:30
that I was working in the coal mines and in the steel mills. | 22:36
And to think that God in spite of everything, | 22:39
which suggested the contrary could bring me | 22:43
to this place this day, I know that | 22:46
a miracle is waiting for you. | 22:49
Don't be afraid, don't be discouraged | 22:52
because your faith does not seem to the large, | 22:56
but if you have the faith of a mustard seed | 22:59
and believe that God is sovereign and almighty | 23:03
God can take that faith and transform it | 23:07
so that it would not only make your life meaningful | 23:13
and powerful but it will touch the lives of those around you | 23:16
and the river that flows through the banks of time | 23:21
picking up this, that, and the other depositing it into | 23:25
the sea of eternity so your life can touch | 23:28
the lives of others and leave rich deposits of soil | 23:31
that will bear fruit in the Father's name. | 23:36
A miracle is waiting for you. | 23:39
So you're weak, so you are inadequate. | 23:44
So you have misused these three years. | 23:46
You have not done the best that you could | 23:49
in spite of that God has brought you to this place | 23:52
and has somebody out there waiting for a message | 23:56
from him through you so that you can tell | 24:01
the world the good news that God still lives, | 24:05
that God has been satisfied with every form of oppression. | 24:10
That God is opposed to every status quo, | 24:14
do not bend down in the world, do not settle down, | 24:17
because a miracle is waiting. | 24:21
Waiting to take you home to that land that John saw, | 24:23
he looked out and saw that greatness | 24:29
that no man could not. | 24:31
Coming out of every nation, every race, every tribe | 24:33
crying out hallelujah, hallelujah. | 24:38
I want to be there to crown him, Lord of all, | 24:42
A miracle is waiting. | 24:49
- | Let us stand and join in the historic confession | 25:01 |
of the Christian faith. | 25:04
- | I believe in God, the Father almighty, | 25:10 |
maker of heaven and earth | 25:14
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. | 25:16
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, | 25:19
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate | 25:22
was crucified, died and buried. | 25:26
The third day he rose from the dead. | 25:29
He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand | 25:31
of God, the Father almighty. | 25:34
From hence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. | 25:37
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church, | 25:41
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, | 25:45
the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. | 25:49
Amen. | 25:53 | |
(muffled hymnal singing) | 25:55
Would you please be seated. | 26:39
And will you turn in your hymn books to number 746 | 26:43
in the back of the hymnal, number 746. | 26:48
The prayer for the church, land, and world, 746 | 26:52
Remember, oh, Lord thy church on earth. | 27:04
Deepen her influence and extend her power for good. | 27:08
Till the kingdoms of this world | 27:12
become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. | 27:14
We pray for our beloved land, for our leaders and governors | 27:19
and for all who have part in public service. | 27:24
Make them pure in motive, wise in counsel | 27:27
and strong in action, doing right in the fear | 27:32
of thy holy name. | 27:36 | |
Father in heaven, look down in mercy | 27:38
upon our distraught and fevered world. | 27:41
Forgive the mistake and ambitions, | 27:44
the selfish passions and presumptuous claims of men. | 27:46
Remove all suspicion and bitterness | 27:52
from among the nations and bring them to peace and comfort | 27:55
by the redeeming love of Christ. | 27:59
Have mercy Lord, upon those who are passing through | 28:03
soar trial, the poor, the sick, the anxious, the oppressed, | 28:07
those who are in danger from the fury of the elements | 28:13
or from the violence of men. | 28:17
Inspire in us and in our fellow men, | 28:20
the will to help our suffering brethren. | 28:24
Heal, protect and strengthen them according to their needs. | 28:27
Comfort those in sorrow with the comfort | 28:32
which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord. | 28:35
We pray for our own dear ones where soever they are. | 28:39
That's surrounded by thy love, | 28:44
they may be kept in health and joy | 28:46
and abide in safety and peace | 28:49
