Worldwide Communion Sunday, which we celebrate | 20:22
and in which we now participate is a recent venture | 20:28
on the part of American Protestantism. | 20:34
It was in 1938, only a generation ago | 20:39
that National Council of Churches of Christ in America, | 20:46
first shared in the Worldwide Celebration | 20:51
of Holy Communion, the Lord's supper, | 20:57
the Eucharist, on the first Sunday in October. | 21:01
The purpose of such a venture was and is very simple, | 21:07
to remember once a year, | 21:13
along with our other Protestant brethren | 21:18
of all denominational varieties | 21:22
that first, Last Supper in an effort to understand | 21:26
and to believe that what we have in common | 21:33
is more important to us and to God than what separates us, | 21:40
often, so miserably and so bitterly. | 21:48
That is why the passage of scripture | 21:54
for the sacrament this Sunday | 21:56
is the high priestly prayer of Jesus. | 21:58
In the story of the Last Supper as recorded in the gospel | 22:04
according to Saint John, part if which has just been read. | 22:07
Now the emphasis of that passage is, | 22:13
first, that it was possible for the elderly disciples | 22:16
to be one, of one mind, even as Jesus and God | 22:22
were of one mind. | 22:30 | |
And second, that those who hear the good news | 22:33
from his disciples me also be one, one with him, | 22:38
and one with one another. | 22:46
Listen to what Jesus said, | 22:50
I do not pray for these only, that is for the 12, | 22:52
but also for those who believe in me through their word. | 22:57
And that includes us, centuries later in a university chapel | 23:03
at an ecumenical service. | 23:11
Jesus prayed for us that we may be one. | 23:15
Now, let me illustrate the sorrow and the joy | 23:24
and the sustaining power of the Lord's Supper | 23:29
with three incidents from my own life. | 23:33
When I first came to the university back in 1945, | 23:38
I was invited to preach in our local downtown church. | 23:42
I did and after the service, | 23:48
I was told that there would follow a celebration | 23:52
of the Lord's Supper, but that I could not receive | 23:56
as I was not a member of that congregation. | 24:01
And I thought to myself, that I, | 24:06
well, Cleland you're in good company. | 24:09
Jesus could not receive since he isn't a member | 24:13
of that congregation either. | 24:16
And I recall that they may be one, | 24:21
didn't that local church believe | 24:28
that 20th century Christians maybe one? | 24:31
Oh yes, they did, but within limits. | 24:35
The second incident was much more recent. | 24:41
I was preaching at the Naval Academy in Annapolis | 24:44
and Catholic chaplain invited me to deliver the sermon | 24:48
at the nine o'clock mass. | 24:52
The same sermon which the Protestants were to hear | 24:54
at 11 o'clock. | 24:57 | |
I consented, then I asked him, | 25:00
do I receive the wafer or do I not? | 25:04
I just want to know for comfort sake | 25:09
where I am and what I do. | 25:12
He answered you receive, but you don't stick out your hand | 25:15
like an Episcopalian, (congregation murmuring) | 25:21
you just open your mouth and I put in. | 25:28
(laughing) | 25:31 | |
So, at the given moment, I opened and he popped. | 25:34
You know what? | 25:41 | |
At the end of the service, the priest drains the chalice, | 25:42
he took one sip, brought the chalice to me | 25:46
and said drink it. | 25:50
I did with some fear and trembling, | 25:52
but it was a gentle wine. | 25:55
And the words of Jesus came to me with new meaning, | 25:59
that they may be one, a Roman Catholic, one senior | 26:02
and a Scott's Presbyterian visiting preacher. | 26:08
The third incident is centered on my mother | 26:13
who has often spoken from this pulpit | 26:17
through her son. | 26:21 | |
In the church of Scotland, the Lord's supper | 26:23
is usually celebrated about four times a year, | 26:25
each occurrence is a series of three different | 26:31
but related services, a preparatory service | 26:34
on Friday evening, the communion popper on Sunday morning | 26:38
repeated on Sunday afternoon. | 26:44
The Thanksgiving service on Sunday evening, | 26:47
often concluded with the hallelujah chorus. | 26:50
At the age of 18, my mother received the bread and the wine | 26:56
for the first time after attending | 27:00
the young communicans class for three years. | 27:03
She then never missed that three fold service, | 27:09
four times a year until she died at the age of 82. | 27:15
I told one of my colleagues in the divinity school | 27:22
about this aspect of my mother's church life. | 27:24
In amazed admiration, he commented, | 27:28
she must have a high view of the sacrament. | 27:31
Few months later, I was in Scotland. | 27:37
So I asked her, mother, do you have a high view | 27:40
of the sacrament of the Lord's Supper? | 27:45
She answered, I don't know what you're talking about. | 27:49
At the Last Supper, Jesus asked his friends | 27:54
not to forget Him. | 27:59
"This do in remembrance of me." | 28:02
I am one of his friends, I do not forget Him. | 28:06
Now, that is as low a Protestant view of the Lord Supper | 28:13
as one could find, | 28:18
but it hit my mother going for nigh on 64 years, | 28:21
age 18 to age 82, in remembrance of Him, | 28:27
who was her Lord and in company with fellow communicants | 28:33
who took the Lord's Supper very serious. | 28:39
So here we are on Worldwide Communion Sunday, | 28:44
members of a variety of denominations, | 28:48
which are sometimes abominations, | 28:52
let us hold in our memories and in our hearts, | 28:56
our brethren throughout the world, | 29:00
bound to us because we are all invited guests | 29:03
at the table whose host is Jesus the Christ | 29:09
and whose constant prayer is | 29:14
that we would all be one, | 29:17
the clergy who are his servants at the table | 29:21
will serve you in His name and for His sake. | 29:24
And then after the Benediction, | 29:29
who may lead this house of God, | 29:31
we may have a renewed sense of solidarity with other, | 29:33
all other Christian. | 29:38
After all Jesus prayed that we would be one. | 29:42
