Have you forgotten that when we were baptized | 12:03
onto union with Christ Jesus, | 12:04
we were baptized into his death? | 12:06
By baptism we were buried with him and lay dead | 12:08
in order that as Christ was raised | 12:10
from the dead and the splendor of the father | 12:12
so also we might set our feet up on the new path of life. | 12:14
For as we become incorporate with him in a death like his, | 12:17
we shall also be one with him in a resurrection like his. | 12:20
We know that the man we once were, | 12:24
has been crucified with Christ for the destruction | 12:26
of the sinful self, so that we may no longer | 12:28
be the slaves of sin | 12:30
since a dead man is no longer answerable for sin. | 12:32
But if we died with Christ, | 12:36
we believe that we shall also come to life with him. | 12:37
We know that Christ once raised from the dead, | 12:40
is never to die again. | 12:41
He is no longer under the dominion of death, for in dying | 12:43
as he died, he died to sin once for all, | 12:46
and then living as he lives, he lives to God. | 12:49

"I am lost out here in this world, | 18:32
"and I want you to get me back to Kansas, | 18:35
"where I will be safe and comfortable." | 18:38
This bit of dialogue is of course from that great | 18:43
and enduring classic written by L. Frank Baum, | 18:46
right after the turn of the century, | 18:51
the wonderful "Wizard of Oz." | 18:53
Early in the story, Dorothy is separated | 18:57
from her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry by a cyclone. | 19:00
She is also separated from the world of familiarity | 19:06
and unhappy surroundings, for her life in Kansas | 19:10
was dark and dull and utterly lacking in joy. | 19:14
The only bright spot in her life is her little dog, Toto. | 19:20
The storm whisks Dorothy and Toto together with the house | 19:26
away from the plains of Kansas | 19:30
to the bewildering land of Oz. | 19:33
Dorothy, flooded with fantasy and no longer | 19:38
in touch with the familiar misery of home, | 19:41
is led to seek the help of the Wizard of Oz | 19:45
in his great palace in Emerald City. | 19:48
All Dorothy wants is to go home to the known safety | 19:53
of her unsatisfactory life, | 19:57
rather than tolerate the promises | 20:00
of a new and unfamiliar world. | 20:02
Along the way she meets other distressed creatures, | 20:06
the Scarecrow, the tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. | 20:11
The scarecrow's problem is that he has no brains. | 20:17
He acts foolishly and is certain that his foolishness | 20:22
is no fault of his own. | 20:26
He simply lacks what he needs to behave | 20:29
competently and wisely. | 20:32
So he is happy to join Dorothy, | 20:35
in order to seek the great wizard to ask him | 20:38
to give him some brains. | 20:41
Next is the tin Woodman who is rusted so badly | 20:45
that he cannot move. | 20:49
His problem is that though, he seems very polite, | 20:52
he has no heart. | 20:56 | |
He once was a man of flesh and blood, | 20:58
but was hurt so often that he gradually | 21:01
had all the parts of his body replaced with tin and alas, | 21:05
the heart was left out. | 21:10
He too is not responsible | 21:13
for this unfortunate state of affairs. | 21:15
If only someone would do something for him, | 21:18
he might be able really to care about people | 21:21
instead of merely appearing to be polite. | 21:25
And the fact that he rusts requires other people | 21:29
to be around to oil him up, | 21:32
or he just won't be able to function. | 21:35
The third companion startles them in the woods. | 21:39
It is the Cowardly Lion who menaces them | 21:43
with unwarranted mock ferocity, | 21:46
but all too quickly reveals | 21:49
that he is nothing but a big coward. | 21:51
Although he has brains and heart and home, he lacks courage. | 21:55
Therefore he cannot be expected to follow through | 22:02
with boldness, to risk himself, | 22:05
to act like a man or rather like a lion. | 22:09
He roars to scare others off, but if they stay to challenge, | 22:13
he shows his cowardice. | 22:18
"But how can I help it?" he pleads | 22:21
and then tells Dorothy that now that she knows this, | 22:24
she must be careful not to frighten him. | 22:28
So they all set out to see the wizard, | 22:33
to ask him to give something | 22:35
that they did not have themselves. | 22:37
Well, the similarities between this story | 22:42
and the request of James and John of our Lord | 22:44
in today's gospel are striking. | 22:48
"Master, we should like you to do us a favor." | 22:51
"What is it you want me to do?" he asks. | 22:56
They answered, "Grant us the right to sit in state | 23:00
"with you, one at your right and the other at your left." | 23:03
In other words, take care of us. | 23:07
When you have come into your kingdom, | 23:11
give us the choicest seats at your right and at your left. | 23:13
Nevermind all the others, just take care of us. | 23:18
Well, when you think about it, | 23:24
neither of the requests of James and John, | 23:25
nor those of the characters in Oz are all that unusual. | 23:29
All of us would like to have a fairy godmother to wave her | 23:35
magic wand and do for us | 23:38
what we have such difficulty doing for ourselves. | 23:41
Life is often tough. | 23:46
Why is it that some young people | 23:49
are more popular than others? | 23:51
Oh Lord, why can't you make me | 23:55
as popular as other people are? | 23:57
Why do I have to have a complexion that is unsightly | 24:01
and makes me an outcast? | 24:04
Lord, make me prettier or more handsome. | 24:07
Why is it that I don't have the brains | 24:12
that other people have? | 24:14
Lord make me smarter, | 24:16
make me taller or shorter or thinner or fatter. | 24:19
Help me to do well on the test, help our football team | 24:24
win its next game, | 24:29
say the magic words and make me the center of attention | 24:32
so that people will want to be around me | 24:36
and be attracted to me | 24:39
and I can bask in their adoration. | 24:41
Whenever we are afraid or confused or misunderstand | 24:45
or are cowardly, | 24:50 | |
we always want someone to take us off the hotspot, | 24:52
to do something for us, to give us courage, | 24:56
to help us to understand and to dispel our confusion. | 25:01
Notice that Saint Mark portrays the disciples as afraid, | 25:06
confused, misunderstanding, and cowardly, | 25:11
the very traits of the four in "The Wizard of Oz." | 25:15
And that's the way it is of course, with wizards, | 25:20
until we realize that like the one in the story, | 25:23
there are no such things as wizards, | 25:27
but simply other confused, frightened individuals. | 25:30
As a matter of fact, Dorothy says to him, | 25:35
"You are a very bad man.: | 25:37
And he says, "No, I'm a very good man. | 25:40
"I'm just a very bad wizard." | 25:43
But Dorothy is reluctant when she is confronted | 25:47
with the task of killing the Wicked Witch of the West | 25:52
to take this task on because she cannot | 25:58
be forceful on purpose. | 26:01
The Scarecrow says he will not be able to help | 26:05
because he is a fool, the tin Woodman, | 26:08
because he doesn't have the heart for it, | 26:11
and the Cowardly Lion, because he is too fearful, | 26:15
but the wizard won't let them off the hook. | 26:19
So reluctantly, they set out to slay | 26:22
the Wicked Witch of the West. | 26:25
In the course of the adventure and in spite of themselves, | 26:28
they become caught up with being a part of it | 26:32
and with genuine concern for one another. | 26:37
So much so that the Scarecrow makes wise decisions, | 26:41
The tin Woodman acts out of loyalty, | 26:45
and the Cowardly Lion performs bravely. | 26:49
Eventually even Dorothy is able to be happy | 26:54
for her friends and their achievements | 26:57
even when she fears she may never achieve her own desires. | 27:00
At the end, when they ask the wizard for their rewards, | 27:06
he tries to help them understand what took place. | 27:10
For the Scarecrow, it was not a problem of lacking brains, | 27:15
but of avoiding the experiences that yield knowledge. | 27:19
Now that he could risk being wrong, | 27:25
he could sometimes act wisely. | 27:28
So too with the tin Woodman. | 27:32
It was not a hear he lacked, | 27:35
but rather the willingness to bear unhappiness. | 27:37
And of course the Cowardly Lion needed not courage, | 27:42
but the confidence to know that he could face danger, | 27:47
even when he was terribly frightened. | 27:51
And as far as Dorothy herself was concerned, | 27:54
she had the power all the time to use | 27:58
the silver shoes she had on. | 28:00
So she has learned that she also has the power to go | 28:03
wherever she wants to go and to make changes in her life | 28:07
if only she is willing to take the responsibility | 28:11
of recognizing and using that power. | 28:14
Jesus put it another way. | 28:19
"You do not understand what you are asking. | 28:22
"Can you drink the cup that I drink, be baptized | 28:26
"with the baptism I am baptized with?" | 28:30
"We can," they answered. | 28:34
Jesus said, "The cup that I drink, you shall drink. | 28:37
"And the baptism I am baptized with shall be your baptism. | 28:41
"But to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. | 28:45
"It is for those to whom it has already been assigned." | 28:50
In other words, we all must face | 28:55
whatever is in store for us every day. | 28:57
We must be baptized daily with dying to old situations | 29:02
and experience new beginnings. | 29:08
The person who is lonely or unhappy needs to ask himself | 29:12
or herself what his involvement is with other people. | 29:17
Is he being selfish and wanting something just for himself, | 29:23
or is he willing to work with others | 29:27
not to isolate himself, | 29:30
but to be involved deeply and often painfully in the lives | 29:33
of other people? | 29:37 | |
The person who is not handsome or beautiful must ask himself | 29:39
or herself whether it is true | 29:44
that beauty is only skin deep | 29:47
and whether there is not a beauty of character that comes | 29:49
from facing whatever reality there is in one's life | 29:53
and in rejoicing in the possibility of new beginnings. | 29:58
The person who wants his football team to win every game | 30:03
needs to ask, what can I learn if my team loses | 30:07
and how can I benefit from this as a person | 30:12
in concert with other persons? | 30:15
As Father Joseph of the order of St. Francis has put it, | 30:18
"Growing up is getting out of ourselves | 30:22
"into right relationships with others." | 30:26
This is what happened to the four of "The wizard of Oz." | 30:30
They ceased to be concerned only with themselves and began | 30:34
to work together, to share a common task, | 30:38
to admit their fears and their misunderstandings | 30:43
and their confusion, but to keep at it. | 30:46
James and John, after our Lord's death, | 30:51
of course it meant not only experiencing many small baptisms | 30:53
of death and new life as they labored alongside others | 30:58
in the early church, | 31:02
but also a very painful death themselves. | 31:04
We all have brains, | 31:11
but we can still avoid the experiences | 31:13
that sometimes yield knowledge. | 31:16
Those who are wise can still refuse | 31:20
to run the risk of being wrong. | 31:23
Those who have hearts can still be unwilling | 31:26
to bear unhappiness. | 31:29
And those who do have courage can still lack the confidence | 31:31
to know that they can face danger even when afraid. | 31:35
But all of these are human traits. | 31:40
It's human for us to be frightened. | 31:43
It's human for us to be reluctant to bear unhappiness. | 31:47
It's human of us to want to avoid experiences | 31:51
that give us knowledge. | 31:55
And if there's one thing Jesus always had compassion about, | 31:56
it was for human weakness. | 32:00
But human weaknesses always bolstered when it comes together | 32:04
with others, even in their weakness. | 32:08
The spirit of God moves among people who are all too human | 32:11
and all too frail, yet who searched for solutions | 32:16
to life's problems | 32:20
not in isolation from one another and not in appealing | 32:21
for miracles, but in linking arms and marching resolutely | 32:25
together in search of solutions to one another's problems. | 32:30
And finally, we need not worry about our acceptability | 32:36
to Jesus himself. | 32:40
He always loves those who are downtrodden | 32:43
and poor in spirit. | 32:46
Those not blessed with outstanding looks or personalities. | 32:49
Those not having the greatest brains. | 32:54
Those crippled in mind, or body or spirit. | 32:57
All of these are accepted and acceptable to him | 33:02
and we can take comfort in knowing that in spite of our | 33:07
weakness and our foibles, | 33:10
he loves us and accepts us exactly as we are. | 33:13
He will not wave his magic wand to take away from us | 33:17
the problems we need to work on ourselves. | 33:21
But he has promised that when two or three are gathered | 33:24
together in his name, he is there in their midst. | 33:28
Amen. | 33:33 | |

Strengthen you in all goodness | 38:05
and by the power of the holy spirit, | 38:08
keep you in eternal life. | 38:11
- | Amen. | 38:14 |
- | The peace of the Lord be always with you. | 38:20 |
- | And also with you. | 38:24 |
(congregation murmuring) | 38:26
- | A very happy day to all of you. | 39:36 |
We are happy to have you here. | 39:39
We welcome you. | 39:41 | |
We appreciate what you do as acolytes and servers. | 39:42
We know your parishes appreciate you | 39:49
and we want you to know | 39:50
that your Bishop and your diocese appreciate you. | 39:51
It is a beautiful day and we should have a good game | 39:58
And I wish all of you a very, | 40:02
and caution you to have a very safe trip home. | 40:06
There are many people to whom I would like to express our | 40:12
gratitude for this service. | 40:16
You know those in your own parish | 40:20
who helped to make it possible for you to be here. | 40:23
Back where I sit in this service, | 40:26
you can't hear the preacher, | 40:28
but we want to express our appreciation to the archdeacon | 40:29
for his sermon. | 40:32 | |
I don't mean that we appreciate that | 40:38
we can't hear the sermon, but we just can't hear the sermon. | 40:39
(congregation chuckling) | 40:42
Then there is one person whom we can never thank enough | 40:47
who works on this practically from one year to the other | 40:50
And that is the chaplain here at Duke University, | 40:54
the Reverend Bruce Shepherd. | 40:57
It's a great deal of planning both here and with others | 41:00
to make this a whole occasion of possibility for us. | 41:05
And then we want to thank | 41:11
and express our appreciation to the Reverend Jack Jessup, | 41:13
who works with the youth commission and all the members | 41:17
of the youth commission | 41:19
who are serving as acolytes and servers | 41:20
and ushers at this service. | 41:24
And then the service leaf leaflet, | 41:27
which you have in your hand, | 41:29
take it home with you as part of a souvenir of today. | 41:31
You do not come by this easily. | 41:36
This has all been put together by the Reverend Uly Gooch | 41:40
who is rector of Luke's church in Salisbury | 41:44
who spends a great deal of time | 41:48
seeing that this is all printed and that it is accurate | 41:50
and according to the latest revisions | 41:55
of the Book of Common Prayer. | 41:59
Now, if you're gonna make somebody mad | 42:02
about revisions to the Book of Common Prayer, | 42:03
bring the leaflet back to us, | 42:05
but if you can live with it and you want to know what it is, | 42:08
this is put together on the basis of the most recent | 42:12
decisions made by the general convention. | 42:19
And it is right, too. | 42:22
Isn't the whole prayer book, it's right to, | 42:25
but we want to thank the Reverend Uly Gooch. | 42:28
And then I want to thank the junior choir | 42:30
from the Chapel of the Cross who are with us this morning | 42:32
and the organist from the Chapel of the cross, | 42:37
Mr. Wiley Quinn. | 42:39 | |
I think I've expressed our appreciation to everyone. | 42:40
Have a good day. | 42:43 | |
Root for Duke, root for Wake Forest, | 42:44
pick a winner one way or the other. | 42:46
Ascribe to the law, the honor due his name, | 42:49
bring offerings and come into his courts. | 42:52

The Lord be with you. | 50:02
- | And also with you. | 50:04 |
- | Lift up your hearts. | 50:05 |
- | We lift them up. | 50:08 |
- | Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. | 50:09 |
- | It is right to give thanks and praise. | 50:14 |
- | It is right and a good and joyful thing, | 50:16 |
always and everywhere to give thanks to you, | 50:19
Father, almighty creator of Heaven and Earth | 50:22
because in Jesus Christ, our Lord, | 50:27
you have received us as your sons and daughters, | 50:30
made us citizens of your kingdom | 50:34
and given us the holy spirit to guide us into all truth. | 50:37
Therefore, we praise you joining our voices | 50:43
with angels and archangels | 50:46
and with all the company of heaven who forever sing this | 50:48
hymn to proclaim the glory of your name. | 50:53
(bright organ music) | 50:59
(indistinct) | ||
I can't see. | 51:01 | |
(voices and singing overlapping) | 51:06
(organ drowning out singers) | 51:10
Holy and gracious father, in your infinite love | 51:42
you made us for yourself. | 51:46
And when we had fallen into sin and become subject | 51:49
to evil and death, you and your mercy sent Jesus Christ, | 51:52
your only and eternal son to share our human nature, | 51:57
to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, | 52:02
the God and father of all. | 52:07
He stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself | 52:10
in obedience to your will, | 52:14
a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. | 52:17
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, | 52:22
our Lord Jesus Christ took bread. | 52:26
And when he had given thanks to you, | 52:30
he broke it and gave it to his disciples and said, | 52:32
"Take, eat, this is my body, which is given for you. | 52:37
"Do this for the remembrance of me." | 52:43
After supper, he took the cup of wine. | 52:48
And when he had given thanks, he gave it to them and said, | 52:52
"Drink this, all of you. | 52:56
"This is my blood of the new covenant, | 52:59
"which is shed for you | 53:02
"and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. | 53:07
"Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." | 53:12
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith. | 53:19
- | Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. | 53:24 |
- | We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, oh, father | 53:31 |
in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. | 53:34
Recalling his death, resurrection and ascension, | 53:39
we offer you these gifts. | 53:42
Sanctify them by your holy spirit to be for your people, | 53:46
the body and blood of your son, | 53:50
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. | 53:53
Sanctify us all so that we may faithfully receive | 53:58
this holy sacrament and serve you | 54:02
in unity, constancy, and peace. | 54:05
And at the last day, | 54:09
bring us with all your saints into the joy | 54:10
of your eternal kingdom. | 54:13
All this we ask through your son, Jesus Christ, | 54:16
by him and with him and in him, | 54:21
in the unity of the holy spirit, all honor, | 54:23
and glory is yours, almighty father now and forever. | 54:26
- | Amen. | 54:32 |
- | And now as our savior, Christ has taught us | 54:35 |
we are bold to say... | 54:38
- | Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, | 54:41 |
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, | 54:46
on Earth as it is in Heaven. | 54:49
Give us this day our daily bread | 54:51
and forgive us, our trespasses | 54:54
as we forgive those who trespass against us. | 54:57
And lead us, not into temptation, | 55:01
but deliver us from evil, | 55:03
for thine is the kingdom and the power | 55:05
and the glory forever and ever, amen. | 55:08
- | Hallelujah, Christ our passover is sacrificed for us. | 55:14 |
- | Therefore, let us keep the feast. | 55:20 |
Hallelujah. | 55:22 | |
- | The gifts of God for the people of God. | 55:27 |

You have graciously accepted us, | 1:22:37
a living member of your son, our savior Jesus Christ | 1:22:40
