chapel worship service for Good Friday, | 0:07
April 8th, 1977. | 0:09 | |
- | Live among us. | 1:37 |
Little we know, finally, | 1:41
about that life, | 1:44 | |
only of the light it shed on the world. | 1:47
Yet this, we remember: | 1:54
Jesus the Christ | 1:57 | |
was crucified this day. | 2:01
(organ music) | 2:13 | |
(choir faintly singing to loud organ music) | 3:05
- | It is Passover. | 4:38 |
And when it's supper, the child shall ask, | 4:41
"Why is this night different from all others?" | 4:43
Jesus' disciples responded. | 4:47
A wandering Aramean was my father, | 4:50
and he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, | 4:53
few in number. | 4:57 | |
And there he became a nation, | 4:59
great, mighty, and populous. | 5:02
And the Egyptians treated us harshly | 5:05
and afflicted us and laid upon us hard bondage. | 5:07
Then we cried to the Lord, | 5:12
the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice | 5:14
and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. | 5:18
And the Lord brought us out of Egypt | 5:23
with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, | 5:25
with great terror, with signs and wonders. | 5:29
And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, | 5:34
a land flowing with milk and honey. | 5:38
Thus observe the month of abib. | 5:42
The Lord your God brought you out of Egypt by night, | 5:45
and you shall offer the Passover sacrifice | 5:49
to the Lord your God, from from the flock or the herd | 5:51
at the place which the Lord shall choose | 5:56
to make his name dwell there. | 5:59
You shall eat no leavened bread with it. | 6:03
Seven days you shall eat it with unleavened bread. | 6:06
The bread of affliction. | 6:10
For you came out of the land of Egypt in hurried flight, | 6:12
that all the days of your life, you may remember the day | 6:17
when you came out of the land of Egypt. | 6:21
And when the child shall ask, | 6:25
"Why is this night different from all others?" | 6:28
we shall respond. | 6:32 | |
And they prepared Passover, and when it was evening, | 6:35
Jesus sat at the table with the 12 disciples. | 6:40
And as they were eating, he said, | 6:45
"Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me." | 6:48
And they were very sorrowful. | 6:55
And when they had shared bread and wine and sung a hymn, | 6:58
they went out to the Mount of Olives. | 7:03
Then Jesus said to them, | 7:06
"You will all fall away because of me, this night. | 7:10
For it is written, I will strike the shepherd, | 7:15
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered." | 7:20
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane. | 7:26
And he said to his disciples, | 7:32
"Sit here while I go yonder and pray," | 7:35
and taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, | 7:40
he began to be sorrowful and troubled. | 7:47
Then he said to them, | 7:51
"My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. | 7:53
Remain here and watch with me." | 7:59
And going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed: | 8:03
My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me. | 8:09
Nevertheless, not as I will, | 8:17
but as thou wilt. | 8:21 | |
And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. | 8:24
And he said to Peter, "So could you not watch | 8:30
with me one hour? | 8:35 | |
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. | 8:39
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." | 8:45
Again, for the second time he went away and prayed: | 8:52
My Father, if this cannot pass, unless I drink it, | 8:58
thy will be done. | 9:04 | |
And again, he came and found them sleeping, | 9:07
for their eyes were heavy. | 9:11
So leaving them again, he went away | 9:14
and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. | 9:18
Then he came to the disciples and said to them, | 9:24
"Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? | 9:30
Behold, the hour is at hand, and the son of man is betrayed | 9:35
into the hands of sinners. | 9:42
Rise. Let us be going. | 9:46
See, my betrayer is at hand." | 9:49
While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the 12, | 9:54
and with him, a great crowd with swords and clubs, | 10:00
from the chief priests and the elders of the people. | 10:05
Now, the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, | 10:10
"The one I shall kiss is the man. Seize him." | 10:15
Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas, | 10:21
the high priest, | 10:26 | |
for the scribes and the elders had gathered. | 10:29
(organ music) | 10:37 | |
(faint choir singing along to loud organ) | 11:09
- | Be seated. | 12:53 |
Let us join in our litany of confession. | 13:01
Then those who seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas, | 13:06
the high priest, | 13:10 | |
where the scribes and the elders had gathered. | 13:12
But Peter followed at a distance, | 13:16
as far as the courtyard of the high priest, | 13:18
and going inside, he sat with the guards to see the end. | 13:22
And a maid came to him and said, | 13:27
"You also were with Jesus, the Galilean," | 13:30
but he denied it before them all. | 13:34
Congregation | I do not know what you mean. | 13:37 |
- | And when he went out to the porch, | 13:41 |
another maid saw him and said to the bystanders, | 13:43
"This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." | 13:47
And again, he denied it with an oath. | 13:51
Congregation | I do not know the man. | 13:54 |
- | After a while, the bystanders came up and said to Peter, | 13:58 |
"Certainly, you were also one of them. | 14:02
For your accent betrays you." | 14:05
Then he began to invoke a curse on himself. | 14:07
And to swear: | 14:10 | |
Congregation | I do not know the man. | 14:12 |
- | And immediately the cock crowed, | 14:16 |
and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus: | 14:18
"Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." | 14:21
And he went out and wept bitterly. | 14:26
Let us pray. | 14:30 | |
Lord, forgive us for our unwillingness | 14:33
to accept the full cost of discipleship, | 14:36
for preferring our lives, our comfort, | 14:40
our status in the world, to your will. | 14:43
Forgive our pride in believing | 14:47
that we can take up your cross | 14:49
and follow you depending on our own strength alone, | 14:52
rather than admitting our utter helplessness | 14:57
apart from that strength which only you can give. | 15:00
Grant that we be enabled to give of ourselves, | 15:04
even as Christ gave himself for us. | 15:08
Amen. | 15:12 | |
At daybreak, the high priests brought Jesus before Pilate. | 15:17
Then Pilate asked the high priest a question: | 15:24
"What accusation do you bring against this, man?" | 15:29
Group | If he were not a criminal, | 15:33 |
we would certainly not have handed him over to you. | 15:35
- | Why do you not take him and pass judgment on him | 15:40 |
according to your own law? | 15:44
Group | We have no authority to put anyone to death. | 15:46 |
So we want you to do it for us. | 15:50
- | This was to fulfill what Jesus had said, | 15:54 |
indicating the sort of death he had to die. | 15:57
Pilate went back into the Praetorium and summoned Jesus. | 16:00
Pilate asked him, | 16:04
- | Are you the king of the Jews? | 16:06 |
- | Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own? | 16:11 |
Or have others been telling you about me?" | 16:16
Pilate retorted, "I am no Jew. | 16:20
It is your people and the chief priests | 16:25
who have handed you over to me. | 16:28
What have you done?" | 16:31
Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. | 16:34
If my kingdom were of this world, | 16:40
my subjects would be fighting to save me | 16:43
from being handed over to the Jews. | 16:46
But as it is, my kingdom has no such origin." | 16:49
Pilate said to him again, "Then you are a king?" | 16:56
Jesus answered, "As you say, I am a king. | 17:03
It was for this that I was born. | 17:09
And for this that I came to the world | 17:13
to give testimony for the truth. | 17:17
Everyone who is on the side of truth, listens to my voice." | 17:22
And Pilate replied, "Truth. What is truth?" | 17:30
With these words, Pilate went outside again to the Jews | 17:37
and said to them, | 17:40 | |
"I find no crime in him, but you have a custom | 17:42
that I should release for you one man at the Passover. | 17:47
Well, you had me release for you the king of the Jews. | 17:53
Group | Not this is man. Give us Barrabas instead. | 17:57 |
- | Now, Barrabas was a robber. | 18:01 |
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. | 18:04
The soldiers wove a crown of thorns | 18:08
and fixed it on his head, | 18:11
throwing around his shoulders a cloak of royal purple. | 18:13
Repeatedly, they came up to him and said, | 18:18
as they struck him with their hands and spit on him, | 18:21
Group | "All hail, the King of the Jews." | 18:26 |
- | Pilate went out a second time and said to the crowd, | 18:29 |
- | Behold, I'm bringing him out to you | 18:34 |
that you may know I find no crime in him. | 18:37
- | When Jesus came wearing the crown of thorns and the cloak, | 18:43 |
Pilate said to them, | 18:47
- | Look. Look at this man. | 18:50 |
- | But as soon as the chief priests | 18:53 |
and the temple guard saw him, they shouted, | 18:55
Group | Crucify him. Crucify him! | 18:58 |
- | Take him yourselves and crucify him | 19:02 |
for I find no crime in him. | 19:04
Group | We have a law. | 19:09 |
And by that law, he ought to die, | 19:11
because he has made himself out to be a son of God. | 19:14
Therefore we condemn him to death. | 19:18
- | When Jesus heard this kind of talk, | 19:21 |
he was more afraid than ever. | 19:23
Going back into the Praetorium, he said to Jesus, | 19:26
- | Where do you come from? | 19:32 |
But Jesus gave no answer. | 19:35
Therefore Pilate said to him, | 19:38
"Do you refuse to speak to me? | 19:40
Do you not know that I have the power to crucify you?" | 19:45
Jesus answered him saying, | 19:51
"You would have no power over me whatever, | 19:53
unless it were given to you from above. | 19:56
Therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin." | 20:01
From this Pilate sought to release him, | 20:07
but the Jews cried out, | 20:09
Group | If you free this man, | 20:12 |
you are no friend of Caesar's. | 20:14
Anyone who makes himself a king, becomes Caesar's rival. | 20:16
- | Pilate heard what they were saying | 20:22 |
and brought Jesus outside and took a seat on a judge's bench | 20:24
at the place called the Stone Pavement, | 20:29
"Gabbatha" in Hebrew. | 20:32
It was about noon, the sixth hour. | 20:35
He said to the Jews, | 20:39
- | Look at your king. | 20:41 |
- | At this, they shouted, | 20:44 |
Group | Away with him. Away with him. | 20:45 |
Crucify him. | 20:48 | |
- | What? Shall I crucify your king? | 20:49 |
Group | We have no king but Caesar. | 20:55 |
- | In the end, Pilate was to hand Jesus over to be crucified. | 20:58 |
Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, | 21:03
but that a riot was beginning instead. | 21:06
He took some water and washed his hands | 21:09
in the presence of the crowd, saying, | 21:13
- | I am not responsible for this man's death. | 21:17 |
I shall pretend to have nothing more to do with him. | 21:21
You must see to it yourselves. | 21:26
