The first lesson is taken from the book | 11:35
of the prophet Haggai. | 11:38
In the second year of Darius, the king, | 11:42
in the seventh month, on the 21st day of the month, | 11:46
the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet. | 11:50
Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, | 11:55
governor of Judah | 11:59
and to Joshua, the son of Jozadak, the high priest. | 12:01
And to all the remnant of the people. | 12:06
And say who is left among you | 12:10
that saw this house in its former glory? | 12:14
How do you see it now? | 12:19
Is it not in your sight as nothing? | 12:22
Yet now take courage, oh Zerubbabel says the Lord. | 12:26
Take courage, oh Joshua, son of Jozadak, the high priest. | 12:33
Take courage all you people of the land, says the Lord. | 12:39
Work for I am with you says the Lord of hosts | 12:44
according to the promise that I made with you | 12:50
when you came out of the land of Egypt. | 12:53
My spirit abides among you. | 12:57
Fear not for thus says the Lord of hosts, | 13:01
once again in a little while, | 13:06
I will shake the heavens and the Earth | 13:10
and the sea and the dry land | 13:13
and I will shake all nations | 13:16
so that the treasures of all nations shall come in | 13:20
and I will fill this house with splendor | 13:24
says the Lord of hosts. | 13:29
The silver is mine, | 13:31
and the gold is mine says the Lord of hosts. | 13:35
The latter splendor of this house shall be greater | 13:41
than the former, | 13:45 | |
says the Lord of hosts | 13:46
and in this place, I will give prosperity | 13:49
says the Lord of hosts. | 13:54

- | The gospel is taken from St. Luke. | 15:44 |
And Jesus lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said | 15:51
blessed are you poor | 15:56
for yours is the kingdom of God. | 15:59
Blessed are you that hunger now | 16:03
for you shall be satisfied. | 16:05
Blessed are you that weep now | 16:09
for you shall laugh. | 16:12
Blessed are you when people hate you | 16:15
and when they exclude you and revile you | 16:18
and cast out your name as evil | 16:21
on account of the Son of Man. | 16:24
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy | 16:28
for behold your reward is great in heaven | 16:32
for so their mothers and fathers did | 16:36
to the prophets. | 16:39 | |
But woe to you that are rich | 16:42
for you have received your consolation. | 16:46
Woe to you that are full now | 16:50
for you shall hunger. | 16:53
Woe to you that laugh now | 16:56
for you shall mourn and weep. | 16:58
Woe to you when all people speak well of you | 17:03
for so their ancestors did to the false prophets. | 17:07
But I say to you that here, | 17:14
love your enemies and do good to those who hate you. | 17:17
Bless those who curse you, | 17:22
pray for those who abuse you. | 17:25
To a person who strikes you on the cheek, | 17:29
offer the other also | 17:34
and from one who takes away your coat, | 17:37
do not withhold even your shirt. | 17:39
Give to everyone who begs from you | 17:44
and of all those who take away your goods, | 17:46
do not ask them again. | 17:50
And as you wish that people would do to you, | 17:53
do so to them. | 17:58 | |
If you love those who love you, | 18:01
what credit is that to you | 18:03
for even sinners love those who love them | 18:06
and if you do good to those who do good to you, | 18:11
what credit is that to you? | 18:14
Even sinners do the same | 18:16
and if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive | 18:20
what credit is that to you? | 18:24
Even sinners lend to sinners | 18:27
to receive as much again | 18:30
but love your enemies and do good | 18:33
and lend expecting nothing in return | 18:39
and your reward will be great | 18:43
and you will be children of the most high | 18:46
for God is kind to the ungrateful | 18:50
and to the selfish. | 18:54
Be merciful even as your father is merciful. | 18:57
This ends the reading of the gospel. | 19:03
- | Imagine a sermon in which the preacher begins: | 19:15 |
Blessed are you poor. | 19:22
Oh how fortunate are those of you | 19:28
who are hungry. | 19:30 | |
How lucky are those of you | 19:33
who have a terminal illness. | 19:36
Blessed are you who are going through marital crises. | 19:40
Oh how lucky are you who are unemployed. | 19:44
The congregation does a double take. | 19:49
What is this? | 19:50 | |
Blessed, lucky, fortunate | 19:52
those who are hungry, those who are unemployed, | 19:55
those who are sick, | 19:57
those who are struck down, what is this? | 19:58
This is Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, his Beatitudes. | 20:04
Generations have found comfort | 20:12
in the words of this sermon and well they should | 20:14
for these are words of blessing | 20:19
to those whom life has only cursed. | 20:25
Victims. | 20:30 | |
The hungry. | 20:33 | |
The sick. | 20:35 | |
The poor. | 20:37 | |
The oppressed. | 20:39 | |
Victims. | 20:41 | |
You know, when you think about it, | 20:44
so much of scripture is addressed to victims. | 20:45
When I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, | 20:52
if someone strikes you on the cheek, | 20:57
I suppose that so much of scripture | 21:00
is addressed to victims because in this world | 21:02
there are always so many of the victimized, | 21:05
the majority of human beings are born and live | 21:09
and die in conditions of unremitting suffering, | 21:12
poverty, toil and early death. | 21:16
Thus it is and ever has been. | 21:21
Even today most of the world's peoples live in situations | 21:27
where they are more than likely to be the victims | 21:32
of government rather than its beneficiaries. | 21:34
Just like the people that Jesus addressed | 21:40
in the Sermon on the Mount. | 21:42
And of course we know that Jesus knew | 21:45
what he was talking about | 21:47
because Jesus knew first hand | 21:50
what it's like to have your friends desert you, | 21:53
he knew what it's like to have someone else's spittle | 21:57
run down your cheek, | 22:00
to be whipped, to be dressed up by the police | 22:03
in a royal robe and mocked. | 22:07
He knew what it was like just to hang there | 22:10
while everybody else laughed. | 22:13
When someone strikes you on the cheek, | 22:19
offer him your other cheek as well. | 22:22
If someone asks for your coat, | 22:25
give him your shirt. | 22:28
If you're getting ready to offer your gift | 22:31
up at the altar | 22:33 | |
and someone has something against you, | 22:34
leave your gift at the altar | 22:38
and go set things right with your neighbor. | 22:40
If you will note, the Bible doesn't tell us much | 22:43
to do if we have something against our neighbor. | 22:45
There are no lessons here in assertiveness training | 22:50
and looking out for number one. | 22:52
These are words addressed to victims, | 22:55
those who are persecuted, oppressed, struck down, | 22:58
hungry, sick, if a Roman soldier says to you, | 23:02
Jew, carry my pack a mile, | 23:06
offer to carry it all the way to town. | 23:11
If a Gestapo man shivering in the cold says, | 23:15
give me that coat, | 23:19
offer him your shirt as well. | 23:22
Fred Craddock notes that these Beatitudes | 23:26
belong not only to the poor and the hungry | 23:32
and the persecuted but they belong to us all as well | 23:34
because if you think about it, | 23:38
all of us at some point or another are victims. | 23:42
I'm a victim, | 23:48 | |
I was invited to preach this Sunday at Disney World | 23:50
but here I am in Durham raining. | 23:52
I'm a victim here. | 23:55
I think I've taught this to my own children. | 24:00
Craddock notes that every parent | 24:04
has this sort of game you go through. | 24:05
The little toddler just learning to walk, | 24:08
stepping, taking first faltering steps, | 24:09
stepping, stepping, right off the porch, | 24:12
falling into the shrubbery. | 24:15
I come running, hold the child in my arms | 24:18
and what do you do? | 24:21
Mean old ground hurt this precious one. | 24:24
And I think the child likes it. | 24:30
I've noticed a child gather some comfort from this. | 24:31
Yes, I didn't hit the ground, the ground hit me. | 24:35
I didn't walk off that porch, I was pushed. | 24:41
I'm a victim. | 24:44 | |
And of course, if you in later years | 24:48
with practice you get adept at being a victim. | 24:51
I didn't do poorly in school, I was a victim | 24:56
of an inferior educational system. | 24:58
My parents didn't affirm me enough intellectually | 25:03
or my parents were overindulgent, | 25:07
they gave me everything I wanted, | 25:10
I'm a victim. | 25:12 | |
My parents, my gender, | 25:19
the color of my skin, | 25:23
my economic situation, | 25:24
I'm a victim. | 25:26 | |
When I was in graduate school, | 25:30
I was in this course where they assigned you | 25:32
to read Heidegger's Sein und Zeit, | 25:34
Being and Time. | 25:38 | |
Wretched book. | 25:40 | |
I spent the whole weekend struggling with those concepts, | 25:41
struggling with the hard German | 25:45
and on Monday in class, I confessed to the professor | 25:47
what I understood and the much that I didn't understand, | 25:51
I told him of my struggles. | 25:55
And the professor asked, | 26:00
wait a minute, where are you from, | 26:02
where were you educated? | 26:04
And I said South Carolina, | 26:07
and he said well, there, that explains it. | 26:09
(congregation laughing) | 26:11
You don't have an adequate philosophical background | 26:14
for reading German existentialism. | 26:16
It's not your fault. | 26:20
Yeah, I said, it's not my fault. | 26:26
I'm a victim. | 26:31 | |
They should have put on the dust jacket, | 26:33
not to be read or even attempted by people | 26:34
from South Carolina. | 26:36
I've wasted a whole weekend with this thing. | 26:39
A month ago, listened on the radio | 26:45
to an excruciating account | 26:49
of a young couple in West Virginia | 26:51
who had just been released from prison after a year | 26:55
for the death of their two-year-old son. | 26:59
The little boy died | 27:03
after a three-hour spanking session | 27:04
as the couple was attempting to get him to say he was sorry | 27:10
to another child that he had hit. | 27:13
Bob Edwards interviewing the mother asked, | 27:17
do you feel guilt over what has happened? | 27:22
And she said, yes, of course I feel guilt, anybody would. | 27:26
But anybody would know | 27:31
that I didn't intend this to happen. | 27:32
No, I didn't want this to happen, | 27:36
I consider myself a victim | 27:39
of this fundamentalist Christian commune and its teaching. | 27:42
There's no way in the world | 27:47
I would have done this on my own, I'm a victim. | 27:48
There is great comfort to be had from the reassurance | 27:54
that we are victims. | 27:57
And there's always enough injustice | 28:00
and unfairness and hurt in this world | 28:02
to ensure a steady supply of the victimized. | 28:05
And so, as a preacher, I can rejoice | 28:10
that Jesus had so much to say to the victims | 28:12
because there's always so many of them here | 28:16
on a Sunday morning. | 28:18
And what a wonderful Sunday to have a text like this | 28:22
on this first Sunday that we're broadcasting the service | 28:25
into the rooms of Duke Hospital. | 28:28
But what did Jesus say to the victims? | 28:35
Blessed are you poor. | 28:41
Oh how fortunate are those of you | 28:45
who are hungry. | 28:47 | |
Oh how lucky are you who are oppressed. | 28:49
Love those who hate you, pray for those who abuse you. | 28:55
Did he say, did Jesus say | 29:00
when your belly is bloated with hunger, | 29:04
cower in the corner and contemplate the void in you? | 29:08
Did he say when somebody slaps you on the cheek, | 29:14
go sit somewhere and say now I'm a member | 29:18
of the Sorority of the Slapped? | 29:21
When someone says to you, | 29:26
hey Jew, carry this pack, | 29:29
do you go sit somewhere | 29:36
and feel resentment at your victimization, | 29:37
when the doctor walks in the room looking grim | 29:41
and speaks the terrible words, | 29:44
I have some bad news for you, | 29:45
then pull the sheets up over your head | 29:49
and turn your face to the wall and weep. | 29:51
Victim. | 29:56 | |
When they call you those dirty, demeaning names | 29:59
by which they call people of different colors | 30:01
and beliefs and attitudes, | 30:03
clench your fist and wait for the day | 30:08
when you can call them something? | 30:11
No, no, Jesus said, rejoice. | 30:15
When they try to put you down, | 30:23
leap for joy, | 30:26 | |
when they want you to weep, laugh, | 30:28
when they want ya hungry and empty, | 30:33
you show them how full you are. | 30:35
Blessed as you are, | 30:39
don't you let them make a victim of you. | 30:40
Every time you clench your fist, | 30:45
you're just like them. | 30:51
They've won. | 30:53 | |
No, as for you, you turn the other cheek, | 30:55
you turn this thing around. | 30:58
Not everybody has the opportunity | 31:00
to turn it around, turn it around. | 31:02
The question is not if we shall be a victim, | 31:06
no, today's question is how. | 31:11
There's a way to do it. | 31:17
I had no word of comfort for her | 31:22
when we got the news the cancer | 31:25
had already spread too far in her beloved husband. | 31:29
Treatment was pointless. | 31:34
There was nothing to be done but to wait | 31:37
for the inevitable, powerless, | 31:40
impotent, speechless. | 31:45
Loquacious preacher that I am, | 31:50
I had no word of comfort for her. | 31:52
Tragedy does that to people. | 31:56
Even preachers. | 31:59 | |
And with predicted speed, | 32:02
the enemy ravaged his body | 32:04
and defeat was acknowledged at 2:45 p.m. on a Tuesday. | 32:08
We ran up the white flag, | 32:13
and we gathered together the cards | 32:16
that friends had sent and the wilted flowers | 32:18
and I took her back home | 32:20
widowed, bereft, unskilled, under funded, | 32:24
alone, victimized, I thought. | 32:29
Well on Thursday the church gathered for the funeral. | 32:37
One more defeat for the church. | 32:41
No, no, we won't have a winning season | 32:43
this year either it seems. | 32:45
But when the grim dark limousine pulled up | 32:50
to the front door of the church | 32:52
and I stood there and the officious little mortician | 32:54
helped her out of the car, | 32:57
she emerged wearing a red hat | 32:58
and matching red shoes. | 33:05
And as she came up the steps, | 33:09
she said, don't sing anything today but Easter songs. | 33:10
A red hat. | 33:18 | |
And as we sang, I saw old death get up | 33:23
and slink out the back door disgusted. | 33:27
His great defeat just ruined by a red hat. | 33:34
You see, Jesus' word of blessing is this: | 33:41
You saints can turn this thing around. | 33:45
Don't you let them make you a victim. | 33:49
Turn the other cheek, go the second mile, | 33:52
when they want you to weep, laugh | 33:56
and when they ask for your coat, | 33:58
give them your Van Heusen as well. | 33:59
Turn this thing around. | 34:01
We're getting ready to come to the Lord's table. | 34:05
The table of the chief victim, Jesus | 34:09
and it makes all the difference in the world | 34:15
how you come. | 34:17 | |
You know how you're supposed to come. | 34:19
