Oh God, from whom all good doth come, | 9:00
grant that by Thy inspiration, | 9:05
we may think those things that are right | 9:07
and by Thy merciful guiding | 9:11
may perform the same through Jesus Christ our Lord | 9:13
who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, | 9:18
one God forever and ever, amen. | 9:22
- | Let us pray. | 9:38 |
Open our hearts and minds, oh God, | 9:41
by the power of Your Holy Spirit | 9:45
so that as the word is read and proclaimed | 9:48
we might hear with joy what You say to us this day, amen. | 9:53
The first lesson is taken from the Book of Genesis. | 10:01
Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran | 10:07
and he came to a certain place | 10:12
and stayed there that night because the sun had set. | 10:15
Taking one of the stones of the place, | 10:22
he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep | 10:24
and he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth | 10:30
and the top of it reached to Heaven | 10:35
and behold, the angels of God were ascending | 10:38
and descending on it. | 10:43
And behold, the Lord stood above it | 10:45
and said, "I am the Lord. | 10:49
"The God of Abraham, your father, and the God of Isaac. | 10:53
"The land on which you lie | 10:58
"I will give to you and your descendants | 11:01
"and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth | 11:05
"and you shall spread abroad to the west | 11:10
"and to the east and to the north and to the south | 11:13
"and by you and your descendants shall all | 11:17
"the families of the earth bless themselves. | 11:20
"Behold, I am with you and will keep you | 11:24
"wherever you go and will bring you back to this land | 11:29
"for I will not leave you until I have done that | 11:35
"of which I have spoken to you." | 11:38
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, | 11:42
"Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it." | 11:46
And he was afraid, and said, | 11:52
"How awesome is this place? | 11:55
"This is none other than the house of God | 11:59
"and this is the gate of Heaven." | 12:03
This ends the reading of the first lesson. | 12:07
Woman | He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, | 12:25 |
Congregation | who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, | 12:29 |
Woman | will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress" | 12:31 |
Everyone | "My God, in whom I trust." | 12:36 |
Woman | For he will deliver you from the snare | 12:42 |
of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence; | 12:44
he will cover you with his pinions, | 12:53
and under his wings you will find his refuge; | 12:55
Congregation | his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. | 12:58 |
Woman | You will not fear the terror of the night, | 13:01 |
Congregation | nor the arrow that flies by day, | 13:04 |
Woman | nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, | 13:06 |
Congregation | nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. | 13:10 |
Woman | A thousand may fall at your side, | 13:13 |
ten thousand at your right hand; | 13:15
Congregation | but it will not come near you. | 13:18 |
Woman | You will only look with your eyes | 13:20 |
Congregation | and see the recompense of the wicked. | 13:23 |
- | Because you have made the Lord your refuge, | 13:25 |
Congregation | the Most High your habitation, | 13:29 |
- | no evil shall befall you, | 13:31 |
Congregation | no scourge come near your tent. | 13:34 |
- | For he will give his angels charge of you | 13:36 |
Congregation | to guard you in all your ways. | 13:39 |
- | On their hands they will bear you up, | 13:42 |
Congregation | lest you dash your foot against a stone. | 13:45 |
- | When he calls to me, I will answer him; | 13:48 |
Congregation | I will be with him in trouble, | 13:51 |
I will rescue him and honor him. | 13:54
- | With long life I will satisfy him, | 13:57 |
Congregation | and show him my salvation. | 14:00 |

- | The second lesson is taken from Romans. | 15:12 |
Therefore, as sin came into the world | 15:16
through one human being and death through sin, | 15:20
and so death spread to all humanity because all sinned, | 15:25
sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, | 15:31
but sin is not counted where there is no law. | 15:37
Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those | 15:42
whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, | 15:47
who was a type of the one who was to come. | 15:52
But the free gift is not like the trespass. | 15:56
For if many died through the trespass of one, | 16:01
much more have the grace of God | 16:05
and the free gift in the grace | 16:07
of that one person Jesus Christ abounded for many. | 16:09
And the free gift is not like the effect of that one's sin. | 16:14
For the judgment following one trespass | 16:20
brought condemnation, but the free gift following many | 16:24
trespasses brings justification. | 16:29
If, because of the trespass of one, | 16:32
death reigned through the one, | 16:37
much more will those who receive the abundance of grace | 16:40
and the free gift of righteousness reign in life | 16:45
through the one person Jesus Christ. | 16:49
Then as the trespass of one led to condemnation for all, | 16:53
so the act of righteousness of one | 16:59
leads to acquittal and life for all. | 17:02
For as by the disobedience of one, many were made sinners, | 17:07
so by the obedience of one, many will be made righteous. | 17:12
This ends the reading of the second lesson. | 17:19
(organ playing) | 17:29 | |
(choir singing) | 17:35 | |
- | Hear this reading from the gospel according to St. Matthew | 20:12 |
beginning at the 10th chapter and the 24th verse. | 20:16
A disciple is not above his teacher, | 20:20
nor a servant above his master; | 20:23
it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, | 20:26
and the servant like his master. | 20:29
If they have called the master of the house Be-el'zebul, | 20:32
how much more will they malign those of his household. | 20:36
So have no fear of them; | 20:40
for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, | 20:42
or hidden that will not be known. | 20:46
What I tell you in the dark, utter it in the light; | 20:48
and what you hear whispered, proclaim upon the housetops. | 20:52
And do not fear those who kill the body | 20:57
but cannot kill the soul; | 21:00
rather fear him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. | 21:02
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? | 21:07
And not one of them will fall to the ground | 21:11
without your Father's will. | 21:13
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. | 21:15
Fear not, therefore; | 21:19
you are of more value than many sparrows. | 21:21
So every one who acknowledges me before men, | 21:24
I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; | 21:28
but whoever denies me before men, | 21:33
I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. | 21:35
Here ends the reading from the gospel. | 21:41
It's a great honor and privilege | 21:46
to be able to speak from this pulpit in Duke Chapel. | 21:47
I couldn't help but noticing something about this pulpit | 21:51
when I first come to see it this morning. | 21:54
And that was that this is actually an adjustable pulpit, | 21:58
a real work of engineering that you should come and see. | 22:02
I recall the story that's told by my family | 22:06
about the small, semi-rural church in Texas | 22:09
where they grew up. | 22:13
According to the story, my father, | 22:15
when he was in high school, observed that | 22:17
the Methodist preachers sent to this church | 22:19
every four years did not come in uniform sizes. | 22:22
So he got the idea in his mind | 22:26
to construct an adjustable pulpit. | 22:29
He built it so that it had a trap door on the back | 22:32
and a crank inside where it could be moved up and down | 22:36
to suit the size of the person standing behind it. | 22:39
On the first Sunday after it was installed, | 22:44
the minister demonstrated this adjustable pulpit | 22:47
to the congregation and showed it so that everyone | 22:50
could see it, cranked it up and down, and so forth. | 22:54
Now my uncle Thomas Benton Spell never said much | 22:58
but when he did say something, | 23:01
it was usually worth recording. | 23:03
And that morning as Uncle TB greeted the minister | 23:06
at the back of the church, he was heard to say, | 23:09
"Well preacher, I've never seen a crank inside a pulpit | 23:12
"before but I've seen plenty behind them." | 23:16
In this case, the crank is behind the pulpit. | 23:22
As you have visited around from church to church | 23:28
in this country, you may have found yourself wondering | 23:31
sometimes whatever becomes of those omnipresent | 23:34
registration of attendance pads, the filling out of which | 23:39
seems to be as much a part of orthodoxy in middle class | 23:43
American religion as the eucharistic prayer itself. | 23:47
Well as the newly appointed assistant pastor | 23:52
of Sunset United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Texas, | 23:55
the task fell to me of reading | 24:00
the attendance registration forms every week. | 24:03
I remember regarding this as a duty | 24:07
more appropriate, I thought, to the church secretary | 24:10
but my supervising pastor suggested that | 24:13
this would be a good way to get to know | 24:16
the congregation as he said and so every week, | 24:19
I read these forms, made up lists of visitors, | 24:22
and marked the attendance of regular members | 24:27
in a great bound book which I supposed would be opened | 24:30
and read only at the time of the Judgment Day. | 24:35
A few weeks after I came to this church, | 24:40
I found to my great surprise | 24:42
that someone had actually checked the little box marked, | 24:45
"I wish to speak with a minister." | 24:49
And so on a sultry, summer weekday afternoon, | 24:52
I called on this person, a high school junior, | 24:56
who explained that she was worried | 25:01
because she had never been confirmed | 25:02
and joined the church as a full member. | 25:05
In western churches that practice infant baptism, | 25:10
it's customary to confirm children at some point | 25:14
when they can make their own profession of Christian faith | 25:17
and be received as a full, mature member of a congregation. | 25:21
In most churches, there's a set time | 25:27
when children are taken through a process | 25:29
leading up to confirmation, but in this case, | 25:32
something had gone wrong and this person had been left out. | 25:35
I asked our church secretary to check | 25:40
the rolls of the church to find out | 25:42
if there might be other youth in her position. | 25:45
And out of a congregation of about 1200 members, | 25:48
the secretary identified at least 50 youth | 25:52
of about high school age who had never been confirmed | 25:55
and had never made a public profession | 25:59
of their Christian faith. | 26:02
We were amazed, although I've come to believe | 26:04
that this may not be unrepresentative. | 26:07
In this case, we organized a special confirmation class | 26:10
for older youth interested in being confirmed | 26:13
and we had about 18 takers. | 26:17
These young people, we found, were far more serious | 26:20
about their Christian profession | 26:23
than your usual 6th grade confirmation class. | 26:26
And when the day came for making their profession of faith | 26:30
in Christ, our congregation rejoiced | 26:33
as they responded affirmatively to this question: | 26:36
Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, | 26:41
and pledge your allegiance to his kingdom? | 26:46
This morning, I would like to consider our Lord's challenge | 26:51
given in the 10th chapter of St. Matthew's gospel, | 26:54
that we should confess him openly | 26:58
before our fellow human beings. | 27:00
I'm concerned that for many persons, | 27:03
the only open confession of Christ they have made, | 27:05
besides reciting the creed in church, | 27:09
was a more or less perfunctory confession | 27:12
made at the time of their confirmation. | 27:15
I'm concerned moreover for our children, | 27:19
members of our congregations, | 27:22
and other persons who may know us | 27:24
that we are not making our commitment to Jesus Christ | 27:26
consistently and publicly known. | 27:30
There can be no doubt that in the Jewish | 27:34
and Christian scriptures, a consistent public confession | 27:36
of one's religious commitment is expected of every believer. | 27:40
The people of Israel were commanded | 27:46
not only to meditate on God's law day and night | 27:48
but also to talk about it in their homes. | 27:53
Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord | 27:56
and you shall love the Lord your God | 28:01
with all your heart, with all your soul, | 28:03
and with all your might. | 28:06
And these words which I command you this day | 28:08
shall be upon your heart and you shall teach them | 28:11
diligently to your children and shall talk of them | 28:15
when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way | 28:19
and when you lie down and when you rise. | 28:24
These very words, hear oh Israel, | 28:28
became a confession of faith for the Jewish people, | 28:31
recited in their worship and in their homes | 28:35
and taught publicly to their children. | 28:38
Christian scripture focuses and holds up | 28:42
the confession of Christ as a consistent theme. | 28:45
The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke | 28:49
recount St. Peter's confession of Christ | 28:51
as the moment when our Lord's identity | 28:55
was first recognized by the disciples | 28:57
and as the founding confession of the Christian church. | 29:00
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, | 29:04
he asked his disciples, | 29:09
who do men say that the son of man is? | 29:11
And they said, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, | 29:14
and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. | 29:20
He said to them, but who do you say that I am? | 29:24
Simon Peter replied, you are the Christ, | 29:29
the son of the living God, and Jesus answered him, | 29:33
blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah | 29:37
for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you | 29:40
but my Father who is in heaven and I tell you, you are Peter | 29:44
and on this rock I will build my church | 29:49
and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. | 29:52
Then he strictly charged the disciples | 29:57
to tell no one that he was the Christ. | 30:00
To tell no one he was the Christ | 30:04
because Jesus' identity was revealed | 30:06
only gradually during his lifetime. | 30:09
But in fact, he had already indicated to his disciples | 30:12
that the time would come when they should acknowledge him | 30:15
openly as we have heard in the gospel lesson for today. | 30:18
So everyone who acknowledges me before other people, | 30:22
I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. | 30:27
But whoever denies me before other people, | 30:31
I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. | 30:34
For the first Christians, the public confession of Christ | 30:39
was an event of momentous importance. | 30:44
According to St. Paul's epistle to the Romans, | 30:47
it was considered necessary for salvation. | 30:50
If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord | 30:54
and believe in your heart | 30:58
that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. | 31:00
For a human being believes with his heart | 31:04
and so is justified | 31:07
and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. | 31:09
In the decades that followed St. Paul, | 31:15
when Christians faced persecution | 31:17
and a new generation of Christians had come along, | 31:19
the New Testament writers had to urge Christians | 31:22
to hold fast to the confessions they had made. | 31:25
Since then we have a great high priest | 31:28
who has passed through the heavens, | 31:31
wrote the author of Hebrews, | 31:33
let us hold fast to our confession. | 31:35
The last book of the New Testament describes the Christians | 31:39
who had borne a faithful testimony to Christ | 31:43
in spite of persecution. | 31:46
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar | 31:49
the souls of those who had been slain | 31:52
for the word of God and for the witness that they had borne. | 31:54
They cried out with a loud voice, | 31:59
oh Sovereign Lord, holy and true, | 32:01
how long before Thou wilt judge and avenge | 32:04
our blood on those who dwell upon the earth. | 32:07
Then they were each given a white robe | 32:11
and told to rest a little longer | 32:13
until the number of their fellow servants | 32:16
and their brethren should be complete. | 32:18
These were the Christian martyrs. | 32:21
The word martyr itself | 32:23
coming from the Greek word meaning a witness. | 32:25
One who had given testimony to her faith in Christ | 32:29
regardless of the consequences. | 32:32
In fact the early Christians seemed | 32:36
to have imagined the consummation of the whole universe | 32:37
in the universal confession of Christ's Lordship. | 32:42
St. Paul wrote to the Philippians, | 32:46
therefore God has highly exalted him | 32:49
and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, | 32:52
that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow | 32:56
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, | 32:59
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord | 33:02
to the glory of God the Father. | 33:06
Christians continued to be persecuted | 33:10
for their faith through the fourth century A.D. | 33:12
In these early centuries, | 33:15
a Christian's confession of faith in Christ | 33:17
was made usually at the time of her baptism, | 33:19
usually on Easter or Pentecost season | 33:23
and only after an extensive period | 33:26
of training and discipline | 33:29
that the early Christians called catechesis. | 33:30
To make this confession of faith in Christ, | 33:34
meant to renounce not only the worship of the genii | 33:36
of the Roman emperors | 33:40
which was sometimes required of citizens, | 33:42
but it also meant to renounce | 33:45
the common religious practices and ceremonies | 33:46
that were a part of daily life in the ancient world, | 33:50
to make the confession of faith in Christ | 33:53
meant to become a part of a new community, | 33:56
a new family, it might mean submission to public ridicule. | 33:59
St. Augustine of Hippo described in his confessions | 34:05
the Christian profession of a neo-platonic philosopher | 34:09
named Marius Victorinus. | 34:13
In this case, the elders of the church at Rome | 34:16
actually offered Victorinus | 34:18
the option of making a private profession | 34:20
for fear of public recrimination | 34:24
but Victorinus decided to go public. | 34:26
St. Augustine wrote, when the hour was come | 34:31
wherein he was to make a profession of his faith | 34:34
which in Rome it was the custom of those | 34:37
that were shortly to come to thy grace to do, | 34:39
in a set form of words, gotten by heart, | 34:42
standing aloft in a more imminent place | 34:45
where they might well be seen of all the faithful people, | 34:47
there was an offer made as he said | 34:51
by the priests unto Victorinus | 34:53
that he might make his profession more privately | 34:55
as the custom was to offer that courtesy to some others | 34:58
who were likely to be bashful and fearful at this matter. | 35:02
But Victorinus chose rather to profess his salvation | 35:06
in the presence of the holy assembly. | 35:10
For whereas that was no salvation | 35:13
that he had taught in rhetoric | 35:15
and yet he had made a public profession of that, | 35:17
how much less therefore ought he to dread | 35:21
that meek flock of thine in the pronouncing of thy word | 35:23
so as soon as he was mounted up aloft | 35:29
to make his profession, | 35:31
everyone that knew him whispered his name one to another | 35:33
with the voice of congratulation. | 35:37
And who was there that did not know him | 35:39
and there ran a soft whisper throughout all the mouths | 35:43
of the rejoicing multitude, Victorinus, Victorinus. | 35:46
Quickly they spake of him with triumphing | 35:52
for that they saw him, | 35:54
and as quickly were they whisted again, | 35:55
that they might now hear him. | 35:57
He pronounced aloud the true faith | 36:00
with an excellent boldness | 36:02
and every man would gladly have plucked him to them | 36:04
into their hearts yea greedily did they snatch him in | 36:07
by loving of him and rejoicing for him. | 36:11
Such was the drama of confession of faith in Christ | 36:15
in the early church. | 36:18
But as the number of adult converts to Christianity lessened | 36:21
and as it became more and more customary | 36:25
to receive children of Christian parents into the faith, | 36:27
the drama of Christian confession naturally lessened. | 36:31
Confirmation by a bishop at the age of seven | 36:35
became the normal practice in the western church | 36:38
and became the custom in Protestant churches as well. | 36:41
But for Protestants and Catholics alike, | 36:46
the discipline of confirmation could become relaxed | 36:48
and confessions of faith in Christ | 36:52
made more because it was the right thing to do | 36:54
than because of genuine commitment. | 36:57
Evangelical Protestants rejected what they saw | 37:00
as the perfunctory practice of confirming children. | 37:04
For the Evangelicals, nothing could take the place | 37:08
of a personal religious experience | 37:12
and a personal confession of Christ | 37:15
made before the believers' class meeting or congregation. | 37:18
But then again if you grew up in an Evangelical church, | 37:22
I'm sure you'll know very well how frequently | 37:26
perfunctory professions of conversion can occur. | 37:29
You know it's supposed to be the sort of thing | 37:34
that you can write down in the back flap of your Bible | 37:35
and note the day and the hour it happened. | 37:39
But believe me, I've got Evangelical friends who could | 37:41
fill a database with their conversion experiences. | 37:45
Every time saying this is the real thing, | 37:49
the last one was just a perfunctory experience | 37:51
so their must be a lot of perfunctory conversions | 37:54
going on out there. | 37:57
The fact of the matter is | 38:00
that the confession that Jesus Christ is Lord, | 38:01
normative as it is in Christian scripture and tradition, | 38:04
becomes all too easily a rote matter | 38:08
and not a matter of ultimate commitment for us. | 38:11
The reason why that confirmation class in Texas | 38:15
was so exciting to me was not because the youth were older, | 38:18
it was I think because they were genuinely concerned about | 38:23
the matter and had been worried about it for some time. | 38:27
If we simply change the age and said confirmations will now | 38:31
take place at the age of 16 instead of the age of 12, | 38:35
I'm sure that eventually that too would become rote | 38:39
and institutionalized and probably less meaningful. | 38:42
But why is it then that if we believe that Jesus Christ | 38:47
is Lord and if we love Jesus Christ above all else, | 38:51
why is it that of all the names that we name, | 38:57
the name of Christ is so seldom on our lips. | 39:01
Why is it that when we are sitting in our houses | 39:05
or walking by the way or lying down or rising up, | 39:08
we so seldom give testimony to our faith in Christ. | 39:13
I'm afraid there's a tendency within each of us | 39:19
to shy away from revealing our most deeply held convictions. | 39:21
There is, for example, in Divinity Schools, | 39:26
and certainly at Duke Divinity School, | 39:30
a very peculiar flavor of theology | 39:33
that I have tentatively identified as fudge divinity. | 39:35
Fudge divinity is the art of framing | 39:41
non-controversial theological statements. | 39:43
Statements that sound really nice | 39:47
but wouldn't offend anyone and so say very little. | 39:49
Statements like this, | 39:54
Christmas means that God shows his love to us in Jesus. | 39:56
Fudge divinity, you see that's wonderful, | 40:02
no one would disagree with it. | 40:04
But if you think about it, of course, | 40:07
God shows his love to us in so many different ways, | 40:08
in the smiles of children, in the little flowers | 40:11
that we see in Duke garden and so forth. | 40:14
The question is can you confess any more about the Savior | 40:17
of humankind than you would confess about a flower? | 40:21
Is Jesus Christ God and Savior, | 40:26
as the constitution of the World Council of Churches states? | 40:30
Should we worship him? | 40:34
Was he miraculously conceived by a virgin? | 40:37
Was he raised bodily from the dead? | 40:41
And if you had something substantial to say about Jesus | 40:45
Christ, can I ask to whom you would be willing to say it? | 40:48
To your friends, your congregation, your family? | 40:53
Most persons I fear would feel uncomfortable | 40:58
speaking about their religious faith to friends | 41:01
for the fact is that most of us don't have an opportunity | 41:04
to speak about our faith | 41:07
even in our homes or in our churches. | 41:09
Please don't try to evade the issue by saying | 41:14
well I make my confession of Christ in the way that I live. | 41:17
I hope that's true, of course, | 41:22
but you know that your other commitments, | 41:24
your love for your friends, for your spouse, | 41:27
your love and commitment to your family | 41:31
would be incomplete if it was not stated explicitly. | 41:34
Surely our commitment to Jesus Christ | 41:39
is no different in this respect. | 41:41
It too will be incomplete and shallow | 41:44
if not expressed with the gift of language | 41:47
that God has given to us. | 41:50
You may think that the idea of giving a personal testimony | 41:53
of faith in Christ is sort of old-fashioned and unnecessary. | 41:56
I can't do that because it was in fact | 42:00
the testimony of other Christians | 42:03
that brought me to an experience of Christian renewal | 42:05
and helped me find my calling to ministry. | 42:09
I'm convinced that our lack of an explicit testimony | 42:13
to Jesus Christ is a hindrance | 42:16
to the renewal of the church in our generation. | 42:19
And so this morning I want to ask you | 42:23
to join with me briefly in a meditative exercise. | 42:25
I'm going to ask that you think about two things | 42:29
and then think about them together. | 42:32
Please bow your heads with me | 42:35
and close your eyes for a few moments. | 42:37
First I want you to imagine as concretely as you can | 42:41
our Lord Jesus Christ. | 42:45
Utilize the best of your knowledge of scripture | 42:48
to think about Christ just for a few moments. | 42:51
Secondly, I want you to imagine, | 43:06
again as concretely as you can, | 43:08
what it is that you actually say, | 43:11
what it is that comes from your lips | 43:14
during the course of a day. | 43:17
Spend a few moments dwelling on that image in your mind. | 43:19
Now imagine that these two images | 43:35
are like slides or transparencies, | 43:37
and you're going to place them on top of each other. | 43:40
Imagine Christ encountering you | 43:43
and the things that you say from day to day. | 43:46
Imagine Christ saying to you, | 43:50
everyone who acknowledges me before other people | 43:53
I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. | 43:56
Eternal God, you have heard the prayers of your people. | 44:12
You have heard our thoughts, the images in our minds. | 44:16
You know the things that are on our lips from day to day. | 44:20
We pray in this hour that | 44:25
your grace would strenghten us in the week to come | 44:27
as we seek to give testimony to the world | 44:30
of our faith that Jesus is the Christ. | 44:33
In the name of the Father and of the Son | 44:37
and of the Holy Spirit, amen. | 44:40
(organ plays) | 44:47 | |
(everyone sings) | 45:30
- | The Lord be with you. | 47:45 |
Congregation | (murmuring) | 47:47 |
- | Let us pray. | 47:49 |
Oh eternal God, Mother and Father to us all, | 48:02
who in love has made us and through love has kept us | 48:07
and who by love would make us perfect. | 48:13
Once again, we pray for Thy help. | 48:17
Not that we might do greater things | 48:20
but that we might do better things. | 48:23
Not that we might be spared life's pain | 48:26
but that we might become wise. | 48:29
Not that we might have all things to enjoy life | 48:33
but that we might be grateful that | 48:37
Thou hast given us life to enjoy all things. | 48:39
We lift these prayers for others before Thee | 48:45
grateful for the abundance of Thy mercy towards us. | 48:48
Bless O Lord all those who would make credible the gospel | 48:53
in an unbelieving age. | 48:57
All who earnestly work for peace, | 49:01
all who live on less in order to share with those | 49:04
who have less than they need, | 49:08
all who plead the cause of the orphan, | 49:11
the prisoner, and the oppressed, | 49:13
all who stand in any company to challenge slurs | 49:17
against any group and to expose prejudice, | 49:21
all who have trained themselves | 49:25
to listen with genuine concern | 49:27
to those who seek a consoling presence. | 49:29
We pray O gracious God for those of us burdened | 49:34
not by too little but by too much. | 49:37
For those who have so much power | 49:41
that they have grown indifferent | 49:43
to the gifts and claims of others. | 49:44
For those who have so much knowledge | 49:47
that they have grown proud and self sufficient | 49:49
and lost the common touch. | 49:52
For those who have so much wealth | 49:55
that they prize possessions more than people. | 49:57
For those who have so many choices, | 50:01
they can hardly see the way clear | 50:04
to know their own hearts and minds. | 50:06
We beseech Thee eternal God for the deep and unspoken needs | 50:10
that fester within many of us. | 50:14
Bless this gathering, | 50:18
whatever our reasons may be for coming here | 50:19
and may the light of Thy love | 50:23
shine through each of us eternally as we confess | 50:26
the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen. | 50:30
And now in the spirit of thanksgiving, | 50:38
let us offer our gifts and ourselves unto God. | 50:40
(organ plays) | 50:48 | |
(choir sings) | 52:49 | |
(everyone sings) | 58:20
Almighty God, we thank Thee | 59:27
for the mystery of our years and the will to live, | 59:29
for difficult choices that help us discover who we are, | 59:33
and for the gift of faith which makes Thy love | 59:37
through Christ the sure foundation on which we build. | 59:41
We offer now these gifts unto Thee | 59:45
as signs of our gratitude and expressions of our joy | 59:47
that Thou hast called us to follow Thee. | 59:51
This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ | 59:55
who taught us to pray with confidence. | 59:57
Everyone | Our Father who art in heaven, | 1:00:00 |
Hallowed be thy name. | 1:00:03
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done | 1:00:05
on earth as it is in heaven. | 1:00:08
Give us this day our daily bread, | 1:00:10
and forgive us our trespasses, | 1:00:13
as we forgive those who trespass against us, | 1:00:16
and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. | 1:00:19
For thine is the kingdom, the power, | 1:00:24
and the glory, forever, amen. | 1:00:26
(organ plays) | 1:00:32 | |
(everyone sings) | 1:01:15
And now go forth in peace and be of good courage. | 1:04:43
Hold fast to that which is good, | 1:04:47
rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit | 1:04:49
and may the blessing of God, Creator, Christ | 1:04:53
and Holy Spirit be with you all, now and forever more. | 1:04:56
(choir sings) | 1:05:05 | |
(organ plays) | 1:05:41 |
