	the palace of aliens is a city no more.	16:48

	cities of ruthless nations will fear thee,	16:57
	for thou has been a stronghold to the poor,	17:00
	a stronghold to the needy in their distress,	17:02

	The king was angry and he sent his troops	23:13
	and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.	23:15
	Then he said to his servants, the wedding is ready	23:18
	but those invited were not worthy.	23:21
	Go therefore to the thoroughfares	23:24
	and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.	23:26
	And those servants went out into the streets	23:30
	and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good,	23:33
	so the wedding hall was filled with guests.	23:36
	But when the king came in to look at the guests,	23:40
	he saw there someone who had no wedding garment	23:43
	and he said to the guest, friend,	23:45
	how did you get in here without a wedding garment?	23:47
	And the guest was speechless.	23:50
	Then the king said to the attendants,	23:52
	bind this one hand and foot and cast this person	23:54
	into the outer darkness.	23:57
	There, men and women will weep and gnash their teeth	23:59
	for many are called, but few are chosen.	24:03

	I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length	26:47
	you have revived your concern for me.	26:50
	You were indeed concerned for me,	26:54
	but you had no opportunity.	26:55
	Not that I complain of want for I have learned	26:58
	in whatever state I am to be content.	27:02
	I know how to be abased and I know how to abound.	27:06
	In any and all circumstances, I have learned the secret	27:11
	of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want,	27:15
	I can do all things through him who strengthens me.	27:20
	Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble,	27:25
	and you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning	27:28
	of the gospel when I left Macedonia,	27:30
	no church entered into partnership with me	27:32
	except only you, for even in Thessalonica,	27:36
	you sent me help once and again.	27:39
	Not that I seek the gift,	27:42
	but I seek the fruit which increases to your credit.	27:44
	I have already received full payment and more.	27:48
	I am filled having received from Epaphroditus	27:52
	the gifts which you sent, and my God will supply	27:56
	every need of yours according to his riches	28:00
	in glory in Christ Jesus.	28:04
	To our God and Father be glory, for ever and ever.	28:07
	Amen.	28:11
	Frankly, I didn't want to be at the meeting that night.	28:16
	I detest meetings, even church meetings.	28:22
	Especially church meetings.	28:26
	But as the representative to the board	28:29
	from the Commission on Ecumenical Basketball,	28:32
	I felt that I should be there at the monthly meeting	28:36
	of the board.	28:39
	We met in the Seekers Sunday School classroom.	28:41
	We sat in rows of fold out metal chairs.	28:44
	There was prayer,	28:49
	and then the minutes of last month's meeting were read.	28:50
	And the chairman rose and said, I call to order this meeting	28:54
	of the board of First Church Philippi.	28:58
	Paul, as many of you know,	29:03
	someone who's meant a great deal to our church, is in jail.	29:06
	Caesar's got him.	29:11
	Oh, he might've been free, but Paul wanted a trial in Rome	29:13
	and so now he's in Rome awaiting a fate there	29:16
	which from all accounts can't be good.	29:20
	And later in this meeting, I want you to know	29:24
	that we'll have prayer for Paul and then we'll receive	29:27
	a love offering which we will send to him	29:29
	to strengthen him in his time of trouble.	29:32
	Oh, what happened to the last love offering we sent Paul,	29:36
	said a voice toward the rear of the room.	29:39
	There was muffled, mumbling.	29:43
	Well, if you'll just let me finish, Gladys,	29:45
	I was trying to tell you that tonight we have received	29:48
	a letter from Paul, written in his own hand,	29:52
	straight from prison,	29:56
	a letter smuggled out by Epaphroditus.	29:57
	You remember, we sent Epaphroditus to Rome	30:01
	to take Paul the cookies and the check,	30:03
	the love offering which we received,	30:06
	and Epaphroditus has brought a letter from Paul	30:09
	expressing no doubt, Paul's gratitude for what we sent him.	30:12
	Now knowing what a good letter Paul can write	30:18
	and how he's been on our minds constantly,	30:22
	let's disperse with the other business	30:24
	and I'll get on with reading the letter.	30:26
	And I'll skip over the details and just share	30:29
	the important things with you.	30:32
	Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,	30:35
	et cetera, grace and peace to you from God.	30:38
	I want you to know that what has happened to me	30:41
	has really served to advance the gospel	30:44
	so that it has become known throughout the whole	30:47
	Praetorian Guard and all the rest	30:49
	that my imprisonment is for Christ.	30:52
	He's in prison because he ran afoul of Felix	30:56
	and Agrippa on the law actually, chirped up Gladys.	30:58
	Well, we know that Gladys, but you know Paul,	31:01
	he's probably trying to put the best face on things.	31:04
	Power of positive thinking, stiff upper lip and all, right.	31:08
	Would you allow me to continue, please?	31:12
	For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.	31:15
	If it is to be life in the flesh,	31:18
	that means fruitful labor for me.	31:20
	Well, let's skip over this,	31:25
	there's a good deal of this and that.	31:26
	Do all things without grumbling or questioning.	31:28
	Be glad and rejoice with me.	31:31
	What does it say about the gifts,	31:33
	the cookies, the money?	31:35
	Yeah, what did he say about the money we sent him?	31:38
	Well, let's see.	31:40
	Here he says, look out for the dogs,	31:42
	look out for evil doers,	31:46
	look out for those who mutilate the flesh.	31:49
	Mutilate what?	31:52
	Dogs, what?	31:53
	Well you know, Paul.	31:54
	For many of whom I have often told you,	31:56
	and now tell you even with tears,	31:58
	are enemies of the cross of Christ.	32:00
	Their god is their belly.	32:02
	Belly?	32:05
	What about the stuff we sent him?	32:06
	I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche	32:09
	to agree in the Lord.	32:12
	Now who told him about Euodia and Syntyche?	32:16
	Epaphroditus, we told you to just	32:18
	to take the package up there,	32:20
	not to go telling tales on Euodia and Syntyche.	32:21
	Well, things we're now in an uproar.	32:25
	The meeting was in danger of disintegrating.	32:28
	Might be worse than last year's board meeting	32:30
	when we had that big row over whether to invite	32:33
	the gospel dog act for Church School Rally Day.	32:35
	Oh wait, wait, said the chairman.	32:39
	Here it is, here it is.	32:40
	That's about time he mentioned the gifts, said Gladys.	32:42
	I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length	32:45
	you have revived your concern for me.	32:50
	What does he mean by "at length,"	32:54
	a voice said toward the rear.	32:56
	We got there as quick as we could.	32:57
	You were indeed concerned for me,	33:00
	but you had no opportunity.	33:02
	Not that I complain of want for I have learned	33:04
	in whatever state I am to be content.	33:06
	I know how to be abased.	33:09
	I know how to abound.	33:12

	Well, did I miss something, asked Gladys	33:55
	after an awkward silence.	33:58
	Well, Paul's just eaten up with gratitude isn't he,	34:01
	said some wag in the back of the room.	34:04
	It took him the whole letter to get around to saying thanks.	34:08
	Then he never really said thanks, said another.	34:12
	Well, that Paul's a good letter writer,	34:17
	but he sure doesn't know how to write a thank you note,	34:18
	said somebody else.	34:21
	Oh, sure, said Herbert Smeed, sure he preaches grace,	34:23
	but when it comes to accepting a little Philippian grace,	34:28
	he doesn't know what to do with it.	34:31
	And what did he mean by you had no opportunity and at length	34:33
	and not that I complain and not that I ever sought the gift.	34:39
	Well, said Myrtle, it just all goes to show	34:45
	that preachers are human too.	34:48
	Well Paul's a little too human for me, Herbert said.	34:51
	Look, said someone, show a little consideration.	34:55
	What you're reading there in that letter	35:00
	are the words of a man in prison.	35:01
	I know what it's like to be in prison,	35:03
	I was in prison during the last persecution	35:05
	four or five months.	35:07
	Starts to work on a man.	35:08
	You lose interest in things,	35:10
	you have to detach yourself from life.	35:12
	You do it in order to survive.	35:14
	You see what you're reading there is the indifference	35:16
	of a man who's trying to survive in jail.	35:19
	Perhaps, said Euodia, Paul really meant to say more	35:23
	and he didn't have time to finish the letter	35:29
	like he wanted to.	35:31
	Epaphroditus, are you sure you got here	35:33
	with a whole letter?	35:34
	You didn't lose something on the way maybe?	35:35
	Everybody turned around and looked over in the back corner	35:38
	where Epaphroditus had been sitting quietly until now.	35:41
	Slowly he rose to his feet.	35:46
	Well, he said, he was overjoyed.	35:50
	You should've seen him when I brought him	35:55
	the things that you sent him, he loved the cookies.	35:57
	But he quickly laid all that aside	36:00
	and then he started asking me about how you were doing,	36:03
	who was well, who was sick.	36:07
	I wish you could've been there.	36:09
	He really was grateful.	36:12
	But I think Paul just wants us to keep things	36:16
	in perspective.	36:21
	What things, said somebody.	36:23
	Well, just things, said Epaphroditus.	36:26
	Things a lot like, it's like Paul said earlier	36:30
	in the letter.	36:34
	Whether I live or I die, whether I'm in prison	36:36
	or I'm set free, it's enough.	36:40
	I'm content.	36:45
	If you read the whole letter, you'll find that it's a theme	36:48
	that crops up again and again throughout the letter.	36:51
	As Paul says, he believes that being in prison	36:58
	has actually served to help his work.	37:00
	He can't witness outside of jail,	37:04
	so now he's witnessing inside of jail.	37:05
	Whether by life or by death, whether he is in want	37:08
	or he is abounds, whether he's close to us or far away,	37:12
	he says it over and over again.	37:15
	The cause goes on.	37:18
	Whether or not Paul has material things or he has nothing,	37:21
	you see, I think Paul is free.	37:26
	He's free even though he's in jail.	37:31
	And he wrote that letter for us on the outside	37:36
	so that we might be free.	37:41
	And there was silence in the room.	37:45
	The silence of knowing that one has been addressed.	37:48
	The gospel Paul preached was not dependent	37:54
	on whether or not he was with us or far away.	37:59
	It wasn't dependent on whether he lived or he died.	38:04
	Paul had been paid in full.	38:08
	Our meeting had become a meeting.	38:12
	We were beginning to understand Paul was grateful,	38:18
	but at the same time, he wanted to tell us that he was free	38:24
	even of our gratitude, even of our gifts.	38:28
	He was free.	38:32
	If he got the gifts, Paul would serve God.	38:34
	If he didn't get the gifts and Epaphroditus	38:37
	had never gotten there, he would serve God.	38:40
	Now that may sound discourteous or even ungrateful,	38:46
	but Paul had to remind us even as he was thanking us	38:50
	that he had learned to be content.	38:56
	In hunger and want and riches and poverty,	39:00
	even if Caesar did not set him free,	39:04
	he was free.	39:09
	I was at a college where a man was being honored	39:15
	for giving $1 million to establish	39:19
	a chair of English literature.	39:22
	One speaker at the banquet got up after the other	39:24
	praising the man's success in business,	39:26
	praising the way he had lifted himself up from poverty	39:30
	by his initiative, praising his generosity,	39:33
	and when they got through, the man himself rose	39:37
	and all he said was, I gave this money to this college	39:41
	in the hopes that it will be used to help these students	39:47
	learn how unimportant money really is.	39:53
	Then he sat down.	39:57
	Paul was defined by neither wealth nor poverty,	40:01
	freedom or imprisonment, success or failure,	40:07
	even life or death.	40:10
	He was free, and thus Paul could say,	40:13
	in whatever state I find myself,	40:16
	I have learned to be content.	40:18
	Oh, we like to picture Paul in Rome pacing up and down	40:21
	in the cell every hour on the hour asking the guard,	40:25
	is there anything for Paul, Saint Paul, addressed,	40:28
	anything from Thessalonica?	40:32
	Nothing even from Galatia?	40:35
	I got myself beaten up for preaching to those people.	40:36
	Nothing even from the Galatians?	40:39
	But no, Paul was free.	40:45
	His relationship to other people,	40:48
	like the people at First Church Philippi,	40:50
	was based not on his need for gratitude or gifts.	40:54
	And so Paul could say in sincerity,	40:58
	I've already been paid in full, you don't owe me a thing.	41:01
	It was kind of you to share in my trouble,	41:06
	but I didn't have to have it.	41:09
	I talked to a man who spent his life	41:15
	teaching teachers how to teach.	41:17
	And he told me in his years of work,	41:20
	the one essential characteristic for a good teacher.	41:22
	And I bet this would apply to students, to doctors,	41:26
	to parents, to lots of people.	41:29
	The one essential characteristic for a good teacher	41:32
	is that a good teacher must be content	41:36
	with the sowing rather than the reaping.	41:39
	A good teacher has got to find enough satisfaction	41:44
	out of just planting the seed	41:47
	and doesn't have to be around for the harvest.	41:51
	It is rare, it is rare in this life	41:56
	to find a truly free person, a person who can say	41:59
	in all honesty, whether I live or I die,	42:04
	whether I'm in want or I abound, I succeed or I fail,	42:07
	it's enough, I'm content.	42:14
	We're not talking about stoic resignation	42:19
	or throwing up the hands or whatever will be will be	42:22
	kind of drivel.	42:26
	Paul knows nothing of such.	42:27
	We're just talking about those who find a means	42:30
	of rising above present circumstances,	42:33
	be those circumstances good or ill.	42:38
	I think this is what's meant in the gospels	42:43
	by Jesus' peace that passes all understanding.	42:46
	I think it belongs to those who are confident	42:53
	in the worth of that to which they have given their lives	42:57
	despite the validation or lack of it given by the world.	43:02
	Paul told First Church Philippi	43:08
	if you need the praise	43:12
	or the validation or the adulation of the system	43:15
	or happiness or riches in life to make your life,	43:21
	there's a good chance you're gonna be miserable.	43:27
	What you need is some way to be content.	43:31
	Whether you abound, are abased, are in plenty or want,	43:36
	wherever you find yourself to be able to say,	43:41
	I've been paid in full.	43:45
	The reporters tracked her down early morning	43:51
	at her laboratory to tell her that the call	43:55
	had just come in from Stockholm.	43:58
	She had been awarded the Nobel Prize in botany.	44:00
	They crowded around the door when she came out.	44:05
	What are you gonna do with the money, somebody said.	44:08
	Is it good to see that your work	44:11
	has finally been recognized by your colleagues?	44:13
	Does it make a difference that you're a woman?	44:15
	She said, well, I hate that all of you	44:19
	have gotten up so early.	44:23
	I've got a lot to do.	44:26
	Thank you all for coming.	44:28
	Then she turned around and went right back	44:31
	in her laboratory.	44:33
	Amen.	44:37

Congregation	And also with you.	47:24

	How can we pray to thee, thou holy and hidden God	47:38
	whose ways are not our ways, who reign us in mystery	47:42
	beyond the realm of time and space.	47:48
	Yet, how can we not pray to the eternal God	47:51
	who knowest what it is to be human because thou hast	47:55
	walked among us, breaking with us the bread	48:00
	of our affliction and drinking deep of the cup of despair.	48:04
	Hear us oh God, both in our words and in our silence.	48:11
	For it is often the silence that speaks better of our need.	48:17
	Speak thy joy unto our silence.	48:21
	Breathe thy life into our less than life.	48:25
	Not for our sakes only, but for the sake of those to whom	48:30
	with thy life in us, we may ourselves bring life.	48:34
	Hear now gracious God, the prayers of all thy children	48:41
	everywhere for forgiveness and healing, for courage,	48:46
	for faith, for hope in times of despair,	48:53
	for endurance in the midst of trial.	48:59
	Hear our prayers for the needs of others this day,	49:03
	for the homeless, the destitute, the sick and the dying,	49:07
	for the hungry and for those who seek to battle	49:15
	the causes of hunger, for victims of violence everywhere,	49:18
	and for those who know no other way than violence,	49:25
	for those who govern the nations of the world,	49:30
	especially those which are conflict torn,	49:34
	for women and men who suffer for the sake of conscience,	49:38
