- Title:
- William H. Willimon - "Being Good" (February 11, 1990)
- Description:
-
Sermon start time: 19:16. Sermon end time: 43:18.
The preacher argues that both the rule-stressing legalist and the rule-ignoring antinomian are arrogant. He argues that Jesus does not come to abolish the law but to intensify the law that fulfills the commandments of love, a law that can only be obeyed by relationship with Christ through grace. (Abstract created by Duke Divinity School staff.)
Key quotation: “The Law, this excessive righteousness which Jesus demands of you and me is a means of making us good. But not as if goodness were the result of our own earnest efforts, because goodness consists of being driven into the arms of a merciful and just God. And these commands are the means of taking us there.”
