- Title:
- William H. Willimon - "Adam Old and New" (March 4, 1990)
- Description:
-
Sermon start time: 26:27. Sermon end time: 45:10.
This sermon speaks to the origin and remedy of sin, arguing that Adam did not fall because of his rebellion of weakness, but because of a desire to be strong, to be Creator rather than creature. Since Adam, fallen human beings have been self-making and trading their souls for food, knowledge, and security. By contrast, the new man, Jesus, placed God's word and will over his own hungry desire, resisting Satan’s temptations of food, knowledge, and security in the wilderness, Jesus’ desire and actions reversed the course of history, breaking the chains of sin and death. (Abstract created by Duke Divinity School staff.)
Key quotation: “In one stunning act of obedience, placing God’s word and will over his own hungry desire…Jesus reversed the course of history. He broke the chains of death.”
