- Title:
- William H. Willimon - "Justice" (September 16, 1990)
- Description:
-
Sermon start time: 24:31. Sermon end time: 43:56.
From the parable where a king settles accounts with his servants, the preacher argues that there is no difference between the vengeful servant and the vengeful king. Both king and servant are just like us in their lack of forgiveness and their fundamental desire to see justice done. The preacher makes the case that Jesus is the only one who truly forgives for he is not involve in the cycle of “balancing accounts”. (Abstract created by Duke Divinity School staff.)
Key quotation: "By the end of the story, when we smile with secret satisfaction as the unforgiving servant is let away to the torturers, Jesus' little story has revealed to us a very big truth: We are probably no worse, but certainly no better than they."
