The whole creation has been groaning | 23:57

As we seek to solve the monumental problems | 24:04

some have charged that Judeo-Christian beliefs | 24:10
are responsibility for the utilitarian attitudes | 24:13
that have led to the exploitation | 24:16
of human beings and the Earth. | 24:19
Others suggest that gnostic influences in Christianity | 24:22
which regard the body as the source | 24:26
of bondage and evil | 24:28
and believe that only the soul is saved | 24:30
has led to a blatant disregard at best | 24:33
and at worst, antagonism toward the physical world. | 24:36
Christians have been accused at best | 24:42
of a lack of leadership | 24:43
in regard to the environmental and social problems | 24:45
that we face | 24:48 | |
and at worst, of responsibility | 24:50
for perpetuating a world view | 24:52
that has led to ecological disaster | 24:55
and callousness to suffering. | 24:58
But we say we care deeply about the environment. | 25:01
We cycle bottles, cans, newspapers, | 25:04
we're doing our part to take care of the environment. | 25:08
We also give generously to many social causes. | 25:11
We pray for peace, | 25:14
we give money to the poor. | 25:16
We're part of the solution, not the problem, | 25:19
it's those other people who aren't doing enough. | 25:21
However, in today's scripture text, | 25:25
both Paul and John make it clear | 25:28
that it is God's intention through Jesus Christ | 25:31
to redeem the entire created order, | 25:34
much more is at stake | 25:39
than individual acts of goodwill. | 25:40
Our hope is not for more social responsibility | 25:44
and activism as important as these may be. | 25:47
No, what is at stake | 25:51
is something much greater, | 25:53
much larger, our hope is for nothing less | 25:55
than the redemption of the whole cosmos. | 25:59
As John so eloquently states in the Gospel, | 26:05
not one thing came into being apart from Christ. | 26:08
The word, the creative power of God. | 26:13
All of creation, the human and non-human, | 26:18
animate and inanimate creatures, | 26:21
everything that is is created, | 26:23
sustained and redeemed by God. | 26:27
Yet we also believe that human beings | 26:32
have been given a unique place in creation. | 26:35
We understand ourselves to be created | 26:39
in God's own image | 26:41
with the freedom and power | 26:44
to choose between good and evil, | 26:47
between God's will and our own self-serving purposes. | 26:49
In our freedom sometimes we make choices | 26:56
that result in evil. | 26:59
We tolerate a diminishing ozone layer | 27:02
because we're unwilling to change our lifestyles | 27:05
by finding alternatives to automobiles | 27:08
and cheap gasoline. | 27:11
We want inexpensive meat and poultry, | 27:13
so we don't ask about their living conditions | 27:17
or our real need for animal protein. | 27:20
The story of human disobedience | 27:26
and self-seeking follows almost immediately | 27:28
after the story of creation. | 27:32
And all of creation suffers | 27:35
as a result of human disobedience. | 27:38
As Paul says in Romans, | 27:41
"for the creation was subjected to futility, | 27:43
"not of its own will | 27:47
"but by the will of the one | 27:49
"who subjected it." | 27:50
Because of our disobedience to God, | 27:53
the whole created order is unable | 27:56
to properly fulfill the purpose | 27:58
of its existence. | 28:00
Because of our disobedience, | 28:03
all of creation suffers | 28:05
and the land mourns. | 28:08
When we poison the water, | 28:11
the most basic element of life, | 28:13
it cannot nurture life as it was created to do | 28:17
and when we clear cut forests, | 28:21
they cannot support the complex life | 28:24
and the life systems that depend upon them, | 28:26
whole species of plants and animals are lost, | 28:29
oxygen is diminished and the entire planet is at risk. | 28:32
Human disobedience to God | 28:38
has cosmic consequences | 28:41
that we are only just beginning to understand. | 28:43
We've tried to play God through our attempts | 28:48
to control nature, | 28:50
through our attempts to use creation | 28:54
for our own purposes | 28:55
and often it has had disastrous results. | 28:58
In order to restore the wholeness of creation, | 29:03
to set right the relationships | 29:06
that were broken through human sinfulness, | 29:09
God chose to become fully human in Jesus the Christ. | 29:12
He took on the fullness of physical reality | 29:16
in order that the physical world | 29:20
might be fully redeemed | 29:22
through his death and resurrection. | 29:24
Jesus didn't come to save us from the world | 29:27
but to save us for the world. | 29:31
Because of the unique role we've been given to play | 29:36
in creation, the redemption of the cosmos begins | 29:39
with the redemption of human beings | 29:43
and the revelation of the children of God. | 29:45
As we are redeemed through Jesus Christ, | 29:49
all of creation shares in that redemption. | 29:51
Through Christ, all creatures, human and non-human | 29:56
are restored to a right relationship | 30:00
with the creator and thus with each other. | 30:03
We're made over into children of God | 30:07
who reflect the character of Christ, | 30:10
the first born of God's children. | 30:12
Through redemption, we're set free | 30:16
to love God and all that God loves. | 30:19
Redemption leads to passionate loving | 30:24
and passionate living. | 30:27
Not just good deeds but wholeness | 30:30
where every part of creation is valued | 30:34
as part of God's own being. | 30:37
Creation waits with eager longing | 30:40
for the revealing of the children of God. | 30:45
Today is the Feast of Saint Francis | 30:49
who has been called the patron saint | 30:52
of the environmental movement. | 30:54
Perhaps as much as any person in history, | 30:57
he embodied the character of Christ. | 31:00
He lived a life of self-emptying poverty | 31:03
as a sign of his faith in God's providential care. | 31:07
The awareness that everything came | 31:11
from the same source filled Francis | 31:13
with a tremendous love | 31:16
for all of creation. | 31:18
He was incapable of seeing the world | 31:20
as something for the mere use of humanity | 31:22
and he insisted on the integrity | 31:25
of all creatures in the scheme of things. | 31:27
He was even known to preach to cornfields, | 31:31
stones, birds, flowers, fire and water, | 31:33
exhorting them to love and praise for the creator. | 31:37
He called all creatures by the name brother or sister. | 31:42
Francis shows us what it means | 31:48
to live as a child of God. | 31:50
