The Old Testament lesson is taken | 9:30
from the beginning of the book of Genesis | 9:32
to the second chapter, verse four. | 9:35
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, | 9:42
the earth was a formless void | 9:46
and darkness covered the face of the deep, | 9:49
while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. | 9:51
Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. | 9:56
And God saw that the light was good, | 10:01
and God separated the light from the darkness. | 10:04
God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. | 10:07
And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. | 10:13
And God said, "Let there be a dome | 10:18
"in the midst of the waters, | 10:20
"and let it separate the waters from the waters." | 10:22
So God made the dome and separated the waters | 10:26
that were under the dome from the waters | 10:29
that were above the dome. | 10:31
And it was so. | 10:34 | |
God called the dome Sky. | 10:36
And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. | 10:39
And God said, "Let the waters under the sky | 10:45
"be gathered together into one place, | 10:47
"and let the dry land appear." | 10:51
And it was so. | 10:53 | |
God called the dry land Earth, | 10:55
and the waters that were gathered together He called Seas. | 10:58
And God saw that it was good. | 11:03
Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation, | 11:05
"plants yielding seed, | 11:10
"and fruit trees of every kind on earth | 11:12
"that bear fruit with the seed in it." | 11:14
And it was so. | 11:18 | |
The earth brought forth vegetation, | 11:20
plants yielding seed of every kind, | 11:23
and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. | 11:26
And God saw that it was good. | 11:30
And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. | 11:33
And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky | 11:39
"to separate the day from the night, | 11:42
"and let them be for signs, and for seasons, | 11:45
"and for days, and years, | 11:49
"and let them be lights in the dome of the sky | 11:51
"to give light upon the earth." | 11:54
And it was so. | 11:57 | |
God made the two great lights, | 11:59
the greater light to rule the day, | 12:02
and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars. | 12:04
God set them in the dome of the sky | 12:08
to give light upon the earth, | 12:10
to rule over the day and over the night, | 12:12
and to separate the light from the darkness. | 12:16
And God saw that it was good. | 12:20
And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. | 12:22
And God said, | 12:29 | |
"Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, | 12:30
"and let birds fly above the earth | 12:34
"across the dome of the sky." | 12:36
So God created the great sea monsters | 12:39
and every living creature that moves, of every kind, | 12:41
with which the waters swarm, | 12:45
and every winged bird of every kind. | 12:47
And God saw that it was good. | 12:51
God blessed them, saying, | 12:54
"Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, | 12:57
and let birds multiply on the earth." | 13:02
And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. | 13:05
And God said, | 13:11 | |
"Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind, | 13:13
"cattle and creeping things | 13:16
"and wild animals of the earth of every kind." | 13:18
And it was so. | 13:22 | |
God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, | 13:24
and the cattle of every kind, | 13:27
and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. | 13:29
And God saw that it was good. | 13:34
Then God said, "Let us make humankind in Our image, | 13:37
"according to Our likeness, | 13:43
"and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, | 13:44
"and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, | 13:48
"and over all the wild animals of the earth, | 13:51
and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." | 13:54
So God created humankind in His image, | 13:59
in the image of God He created them, | 14:03
male and female He created them. | 14:05
God blessed them, and God said to them, | 14:09
"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, | 14:13
"and have dominion over the fish of the sea | 14:19
"and over the birds of the air | 14:22
"and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." | 14:24
God said, "See, I have given you every plant yielding seed | 14:28
"that is upon the face of all the earth, | 14:34
"and every tree with seed in its fruit. | 14:37
"You shall have them for food. | 14:40
"And to every beast of the earth, | 14:43
"and to every bird of the air, | 14:45
"and to everything that creeps on the earth, | 14:47
"everything that has the breath of life, | 14:50
"I have given every green plant for food." | 14:53
And it was so. | 14:57 | |
God saw everything that He had made, | 15:00
and indeed, it was very good. | 15:02
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. | 15:05
Thus, the heavens and the earth were finished, | 15:11
and all their multitude. | 15:14
And on the seventh day God finished the work | 15:16
that He had done, | 15:19 | |
and He rested on the seventh day | 15:21
from all the work He had done. | 15:23
So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it | 15:25
because on it, God rested from all the work | 15:29
that He had done in Creation. | 15:32
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth | 15:35
when they were created. | 15:39
This is the Word of the Lord. | 15:41
Congregation | Thanks be to God. | 15:44 |
- | This second lesson is taken from the Gospel | 15:50 |
according to Mark, the 10th chapter, | 15:52
verses 13 through 16. | 15:56
People were bringing little children to Jesus | 16:03
in order that He might touch them, | 16:06
and the disciples spoke sternly to them, | 16:09
but when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, | 16:12
"Let the little children come to me, | 16:17
"for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. | 16:20
"Truly I tell you, | 16:24
"whoever does not receive the kingdom of God | 16:26
"as a little child will never enter it." | 16:29
And He took them up in his arms, | 16:33
laid hands on them, and blessed He them. | 16:35
This is the Word of the Lord. | 16:40
Congregation | Thanks be to God. | 16:43 |
- | The Genesis story that was read this morning | 16:56 |
is one of the most beloved and most hated Scriptures | 17:00
in our Bible. | 17:03 | |
It is the beloved story of Creation, | 17:05
the story that tells of the God who created | 17:09
with great care and precision | 17:11
every dimension of the world as we know it, | 17:14
starting with the separation of light from darkness, | 17:18
the creative order unfolded | 17:21
as the water was pushed back from the skies and the land, | 17:24
then vegetation of every kind sprouted forth | 17:28
to cover the land, | 17:31
and the sun, and moon, and stars were set in the sky | 17:32
to mark the days, and nights, and seasons. | 17:36
Then, the waters and skies teemed with life, | 17:40
and the earth was filled with living creatures, | 17:43
and finally, human kind was created in the image of God, | 17:46
male and female, to have dominion over every living thing. | 17:51
This is an amazing story, | 17:57
not to be understood as a scientific account | 18:00
of creation history, | 18:03
but as a witness of faith about who we are, | 18:05
and who God is, and how we fit into the scheme of things. | 18:08
This account of Creation has been pivotal | 18:14
in shaping our self understanding, | 18:17
and our faith understanding. | 18:19
First, it tells us that God created our existence, | 18:22
the world we live in. | 18:26
are not just the outcome of a long series of accidents, | 18:28
but the result of a God who creates. | 18:33
Faith tells us that this world and everything in it | 18:37
is part of God's plan. | 18:40
It also tells us that God values the Creation. | 18:44
At the end of each day, not a literal day, | 18:48
but as a dimension of Creation was completed, | 18:51
God declared that it was good. | 18:54
The creation of darkness and light, | 18:57
the sky and the earth, the land and the seas, | 19:00
the plants and the animals, man and woman. | 19:03
Every facet of Creation was called good by the Creator. | 19:07
Everything that God made is valuable to God. | 19:12
Genesis also teaches us that, in the order of Creation, | 19:17
human beings came last. | 19:21
Only after everything necessary | 19:24
for our sustenance and survival had been put in place | 19:26
did God bring forth the first man and woman. | 19:30
It is said that if evolutionary history were compared | 19:34
to the Empire State Building, | 19:37
human history would consist of one layer of paint | 19:39
on the very last brick added to the building. | 19:44
Human beings came last, that is a fact, | 19:49
but we have also understood from this narrative | 19:53
that we were created with a special role. | 19:57
Genesis tells us that we were made in the image of God, | 20:00
blessed by God, commanded to be fruitful, | 20:04
and fill the earth, | 20:07
and given the vocation to subdue the earth, | 20:08
and have dominion over every living thing. | 20:11
This self understanding of being created in God's image | 20:15
and given the vocation and the role of subduing the earth | 20:20
has been at the heart of the Judeo-Christian faith, | 20:24
but it has also been seen as one of the root causes | 20:28
of the ecological crisis that we now face. | 20:33
Misunderstanding of what it means | 20:37
to have dominion over Creation | 20:39
has made this text one of the most dangerous | 20:42
and the most hated Biblical texts for our time. | 20:46
Unfortunately, the concept of human dominion over the earth | 20:50
has often lead to a totally anthropocentric view of reality. | 20:54
In this view, Creation is understood to have been made, | 20:59
primarily, to serve the needs of human beings. | 21:02
Human vocation is seen as the need to conquer nature | 21:06
and subdue it for our own ends. | 21:10
It simply isn't possible to misuse something | 21:13
that was created for the sole purpose of serving us. | 21:17
Understanding humanity's role as domination | 21:22
has also lead to a hierarchical ordering of Creation. | 21:27
Various parts of creation had been valued | 21:31
according to where they fit in the hierarchy. | 21:33
At the top of the hierarchy, of course, is God, | 21:36
then comes white men, and then white women, | 21:39
and white children, then men of color and women of color, | 21:42
and children of color, | 21:46
developed cultures, then undeveloped cultures, | 21:47
the affluent, then the poor. | 21:51
And somewhere, near the very bottom of the hierarchy | 21:53
are the skies, and land, | 21:56
animals, birds, fish, plants, and the oceans, | 21:58
all of which are seen to have intrinsic value | 22:02
only to the extent | 22:05
that they serve those at the top of the hierarchy. | 22:07
Those on top are afforded the right and the authority | 22:10
to dominate Creation as they see fit | 22:13
because they are defined as those closest to God, | 22:16
and, therefore, privileged to know | 22:19
what should be done for the lower creatures. | 22:21
The concept of our dominion and our right | 22:26
to treat the world as we see fit, also, | 22:30
has been fed by our greed. | 22:34
The impact of our actions upon the planet, | 22:37
our neighbor, and even our own children | 22:39
is not considered significant | 22:42
as long as we get what we need | 22:45
when we need it. | 22:48 | |
We've defined the American dream | 22:49
as the right for every person to get as much as they can | 22:51
as quickly as they can for themselves and their family, | 22:55
and to hell with the rest! | 22:59
Greed infects not just our personal | 23:02
but our corporate lives, | 23:05
where profit is the bottom line. | 23:07
Economic dominion translates | 23:10
into the exploitation of human and non-human resources | 23:12
without regard to sustainability or consequences. | 23:17
When laws get to tough in the U.S., | 23:21
we'll just move our businesses across the border | 23:22
where they're so desperate for job, | 23:25
they don't really care how we treat their workers, | 23:27
or what we dump in their backyard, | 23:29
or spew in their air. | 23:33
Economic and environmental injustice are closely tied | 23:36
to our lust for money and power, | 23:39
without regard to who pays the price. | 23:42
Our mission to subdue the planet | 23:46
has also lead to trifle belief | 23:49
that human beings can improve upon nature. | 23:51
Whatever God can do, we can do better. | 23:55
Hence the lumber mill owner | 23:59
can justify clear cutting an old growth rain forest | 24:01
by saying, "I believe I can replicate the forest, | 24:04
"like a farmer growing a crop, | 24:08
"and do it better than nature. | 24:10
"I can remake the forest the same way that nature can, | 24:12
"but do it quicker." | 24:16
Yet, biologist, Daniel Janson, | 24:19
has compared the destruction of millions | 24:21
of unidentified life forms | 24:24
with burning down a library without examining what's in it. | 24:26
Who knows what medical cures or new food sources | 24:32
may be lost to us forever? | 24:35
Our pride and ignorance have also lead | 24:39
to untold destruction. | 24:42
When they were first manufactured in a laboratory, | 24:45
chlorinated fluorocarbons, or CFCs, | 24:48
were hailed as a miracle substance. | 24:51
They were inexpensive to produce, | 24:54
they had no odor, and they made life easier. | 24:56
It was decades later that scientists discovered | 25:00
that they also play a significant role in global warming, | 25:03
chewing away at the ozone layer. | 25:07
Ironically, | 25:11 | |
science and technology have multiplied many times | 25:12
the ecological threat, the very instruments | 25:16
that brought great blessing, and still hold much promise, | 25:19
now threaten to bring disaster on a global scale, | 25:23
unless they are used in harmony rather than in conflict | 25:27
with the created order. | 25:31
So, with the concept of dominion over the earth | 25:34
has led us to the brink of ecological disaster, | 25:37
and we read about that every day in the newspapers | 25:40
and in our magazines. | 25:44
Then how are we to understand the Creation narrative | 25:46
from Genesis? | 25:49 | |
How are we to relate to Creation and to our Creator? | 25:51
What is our distinctive role in the world? | 25:55
To understand this Biblical story correctly, | 25:59
we must read it in the larger context of Scripture. | 26:02
What does the Bible mean by 'dominion'? | 26:07
In the Old Testament, the concept of dominion was used, | 26:12
primarily, to describe God's role as Lord over Israel, | 26:15
who covenanted to be her God and to provide for her needs, | 26:19
as Israel covenanted to be God's people | 26:24
who obeyed God's will. | 26:27
Dominion was also used in relation to Israel's king, | 26:30
who was appointed by God | 26:34
to fulfill God's purposes for Israel. | 26:35
Authority to rule was contingent upon acting as God's agent, | 26:39
and was taken away from those | 26:44
who forgot this primary mission. | 26:46
In all circumstances, the one who ruled | 26:49
was charged with serving God first, | 26:52
and acting on God's behalf | 26:55
to secure the well-being of those who were ruled. | 26:58
In the New Testament, the concept of dominion | 27:03
was further developed through Jesus Christ, | 27:05
who was understood as Lord of all, | 27:08
and Servant of all. | 27:12
Colossians tells us that Jesus, as Lord, | 27:15
is the dimension of God, | 27:19
that part of God through which all things were created, | 27:21
and in whom all things hold together. | 27:25
Nothing exists outside of the Lordship of Christ. | 27:29
Yet Jesus, as Servant, | 27:36
poured Himself out on behalf of all whom God loved. | 27:38
We've often claimed Jesus' love only for human beings, | 27:42
but John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the wold, | 27:46
that God gave His only Son. | 27:51
In Jesus Christ dwells the fullness of God | 27:55
because Christ loves all that God loves, | 27:58
and pours Himself out on behalf of the whole Creation. | 28:02
This is the key. | 28:08 | |
As those who are created in the image of God, | 28:10
we are entrusted with dominion over Creation, | 28:13
not for our own purposes, | 28:16
but in order that we may give ourselves in love and service | 28:19
to all that God has made. | 28:23
We're given dominion over Creation | 28:27
only as Christ has dominion over us. | 28:29
Our vocation is to image God in the world. | 28:34
Jesus Christ is the one who is fully present in us | 28:38
to show us how to do that. | 28:42
Christ makes it possible for us to act like God acts. | 28:44
We fulfill our purpose in life only as Christ lives in us, | 28:51
so that we may act with love toward all whom God loves, | 28:56
and that means the whole Creation. | 28:59
Nothing is omitted from that love. | 29:02
We cannot act with indifference, destructiveness, or greed | 29:06
toward any person or any created thing | 29:10
and claim to love the Creator, | 29:13
for all of Creation is intrinsically valuable to God. | 29:15
We often separate the Creator from the Creation, | 29:21
but Genesis tells us of God's intimate involvement | 29:24
with Creation. | 29:28 | |
God is the mysterious reality | 29:29
which is beyond and more than Creation, | 29:31
yet also the ground of everything that exists. | 29:35
God is transcendent, yet also imminent. | 29:40
Nothing was created apart from God, | 29:43
and nothing exists apart from God. | 29:46
In this sense, all of Creation is sacred, | 29:49
not as the object to be worshiped, | 29:53
but as the created order which is founded and sustained | 29:56
by the very being of God. | 30:00
Indeed, there is nothing outside of God's presence, | 30:03
for God's being and God's Spirit permeates all of life. | 30:06
It is impossible for anything to exist apart from God. | 30:11
The Genesis narrative calls us | 30:18
to a whole new understanding of life. | 30:20
Domination of Creation for our own purposes | 30:24
is not just harmful, | 30:27
but the essence of idolatry and blasphemy. | 30:29
Genesis reminds us that the earth and everything in it | 30:33
belongs to God, and lives though God. | 30:37
What is needed is a fundamental shift | 30:42
in the way we understand our role | 30:44
and the way we connect with the rest of the human | 30:47
and non-human Creation. | 30:49
It means treating all life with reverence. | 30:52
It means acting like God acts, | 30:55
and giving ourselves through Christ in service | 30:58
to the whole Creation. | 31:01
We can no longer make choices as if we lived in a vacuum. | 31:04
Science and technology have proven | 31:09
what Genesis has long proclaimed. | 31:11
This is one Creation, intimately connected. | 31:14
What affects one part has impact on all parts. | 31:17
Threats to any of us threaten all of us. | 31:21
Survival of humanity depends upon the wellbeing | 31:25
and survival of the whole Creation. | 31:28
We will live together or perish together, | 31:31
and that is a fact. | 31:33
Today is World Communion Sunday | 31:37
when we are reminded that the Lord we serve | 31:41
poured Himself out to redeem the whole world. | 31:43
There is nothing in all of Creation | 31:49
that is beyond the love of God. | 31:51
I can think of no better time for us to recommit ourselves | 31:53
to a new way of living, | 31:58
a way that honors all life, | 32:00
and is committed to loving all that God loves. | 32:03
In the words of Dostoyevsky, | 32:07
"Love all God's creation, the whole of it, | 32:09
