here in Duke Chapel. | 20:43
The Holy Spirit, the most neglected person of the Trinity. | 20:45

Talk about fire. | 22:24 | |
We caught a whiff of it in late afternoon, | 22:29
there was just a trace of smoke | 22:31
and then someone said, "Look! | 22:32

And the next thing we heard where the sirens | 22:40

there was a orange glow down in the valley | 22:49

No, no that's called reconciliation, | 27:12
that's called understanding, communion, communication. | 27:16
Or is it Holy Spirit? | 27:23
Maybe this is the closest we ever get | 27:26
to ever talking about this. | 27:28
Maybe the Holy Spirit is one of those human phenomena, | 27:32
there are others, | 27:35
which are only known by their effects, their results. | 27:36
We don't talk much about the Holy Spirit, | 27:42
not because we don't know it, | 27:44
for we certainly do. | 27:47
It's just that there's some phenomena that | 27:50
have to be seen in reflection. | 27:52
By their effects. | 27:59
You can't know about it 200 watt light bulb | 28:00
by staring directly into the bulb, that will only blind you. | 28:03
No, you know about light | 28:09
when you enter a darkened room and you turn on the light | 28:12
and suddenly all of that dark, | 28:15
all of that deadness just comes to life. | 28:19
Objects appear. | 28:23 | |
That is light. | 28:25 | |
Light is best known, not by staring directly | 28:26
into the sun at noon, | 28:30
but light is known in reflection by its effects. | 28:32
Wind, fire, breath. | 28:38
These are all biblical ways of speaking of the Holy Spirit. | 28:41
And it's as if scripture cannot speak | 28:46
of this most intimate of experiences of God | 28:47
without use of metaphor and trope and simile. | 28:53
There are just some things we know only by their effects. | 28:58
And yet, that is also knowledge. | 29:04
Love, talk about love. | 29:11
See them over there? | 29:16

Transfixed for an entire hour, | 29:22
feeding each other pimento cheese sandwiches | 29:24
just like it was ambrosia of the gods. | 29:27
That's love! | 29:30 | |
Love is best known by its effects | 29:34
in reflection and, thus, the Holy Spirit. | 29:38
Everybody was fighting mad | 29:46

A 26-year-old Baptist preacher was there | 30:48
standing on the margins of the crowd. | 30:52
He had only been in town a short time. | 30:55
He was a scholarly man. | 30:58
People complained that he used words in the pulpit, | 31:01
that were too big to understand. | 31:04
People said he'd gone to Boston University | 31:06
and it hadn't gotten out of him yet. | 31:08
He was there, | 31:14 | |
and during the course of that night somebody said, | 31:17
"Preacher, why don't you come up and say a word? | 31:19
"Reverend King, won't you just say a word to the people?" | 31:27
He was, he was in his mid-20s, he had no time to prepare. | 31:29
But he picked up on the theme | 31:40
of Rosa Parks being tired | 31:42
and sitting down on that bus in the wrong section. | 31:44
And he said, "Rosa Parks was tired this afternoon, | 31:50
"but there are a lot of people here at this service | 31:52
"who are also tired." | 31:56
Somebody down there said, "Amen!" | 31:58
He said, "You know, people do get tired. | 32:02
"You know, my friends, there comes a time | 32:07
"when people just get tired, | 32:09
"they get tired of being trampled down | 32:10
"under the feet of the oppressor." | 32:13
And there was applause down at the front. | 32:16
"There comes a time, my people, | 32:20
"when people get tired of being flung | 32:22
"across the dark abyss of humiliation." | 32:27
And there was tumult. | 32:31
And he couldn't finish his speech | 32:35
because people in the congregation | 32:36
just started chanting, "King! King! King!" | 32:39
A moment had been transformed into a movement. | 32:47
Of that speech, my friend and King biographer | 32:56
Rick Lischer says, | 32:59
"History prepared the people that night | 33:02
"for that moment of joy. | 33:06
"History and the Holy Spirit | 33:08
"prepared the way for that moment of joy." | 33:14
Just out of nothing, out of shattered dreams and dust. | 33:22
Of centuries of frustrated hope and helpless hurt. | 33:26
There was this movement because the Spirit | 33:32
had moved again over dark waters, | 33:36
and brought forth life and fire! | 33:39
And a new people was created. | 33:45
Thus says Saint Paul, | 33:51
"All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. | 33:54
"You didn't receive the spirit of slavery | 33:58
"to fall back into fear. | 34:01
"You received the Spirit of adoption. | 34:04
"When we cry, Abba, Father, | 34:08
"it is that Spirit bearing witness | 34:11
"with our spirit, that we are children of God. | 34:13
"Heirs with Christ, in fact, | 34:17
"if we suffer with him | 34:19
"so that we may be glorified with him." | 34:21
He had never had a brother. | 34:30
He had a younger sister, he had an older sister, | 34:32
but he had never had a brother. | 34:34
So when he came to college he went out for Rush. | 34:36
He joined a fraternity, became a pledge. | 34:40
He had always been a bit unsteady socially, | 34:44
had not had that many social experiences. | 34:47
Hadn't dated much in high school. | 34:50
And as he said, "I wanted a brother". | 34:52
He put a lot into his fraternity. | 34:56
The drinking bothered him somewhat at the parties, | 35:01
but, as they say, "that's all part of it." | 35:04
But then there was that night when a number of the brothers | 35:10
had had much too much to drink. | 35:13
And somebody turned out the lights at the end of the hall | 35:19
and she was left there alone at the end of the hall. | 35:22
Too drunk to know her clear and present danger. | 35:27
And he watched as a group | 35:33
of ordinary college fraternity boys | 35:35
turned into a group of ravenous beasts. | 35:38
And he admitted, there was a moment | 35:46
when he, looking down the hall, | 35:47
he thought to himself, | 35:48
"Well, really, it is no business of mine." | 35:50
They are all upperclassman. | 35:54
There was even a moment when he turned away, he turned away. | 35:58
But then, as if seized by some force, | 36:04
some undeniable power greater than himself, | 36:09
something from the outside, | 36:13
when he turned | 36:17 | |
and in confidence, with amazing confidence, | 36:20
he said in a loud, clear, deep voice | 36:23
that he didn't even know he has, he said, | 36:27
"Stop! You don't want to do this." | 36:29
Maybe someone in his hearing cursed him. | 36:38
Maybe someone said, "Butt out, | 36:41
"you'll be sorry if you get into this." | 36:43
It was no matter, he was determined. | 36:45
Even in the darkness you could look through there | 36:47
and see the flash in his eyes. | 36:49
And one by one, with some drunken grumbling, | 36:55
one by one people walked away, | 36:58
and he helped her back to her dorm. | 37:02
Amazingly, as he walked back to his dorm, | 37:07
as dawn was beginning to break across campus on a Saturday, | 37:11
he thought to himself, | 37:17
"It's amazing, even if I don't get into this fraternity | 37:19
"it's OK, 'cause, it's like I feel like I've grown up. | 37:24
"It's like I know who I am." | 37:30
He didn't know what it was, | 37:37
he didn't know what to call it, it didn't have a name. | 37:38
What to call that force which brought strength and courage | 37:44
to stand against the omnipotent, oppressive crowd? | 37:48
Where did he get those words to speak, | 37:54
even though he had never been too good at words? | 37:57
He didn't know what to call it! | 38:02
He didn't know how to define it, describe it. | 38:04
But he knew that it was, | 38:10
the effect, was just undeniable. | 38:14
Thus says John, | 38:22 | |
"Jesus says, I will ask the Father | 38:27
"and He will give you an advocate to be with you forever. | 38:29
"This is the Spirit of truth, | 38:37
"which the world cannot receive, | 38:38
"because the world doesn't see Him, | 38:42
"the world doesn't know Him. | 38:44
