Open our hearts and minds, oh God, by the power | 11:31
of your Holy Spirit, so that, as the Word is read | 11:35
and proclaimed, we may hear your message with joy this day. | 11:39
Amen. | 11:44 | |
The epistle lesson is found in Paul's letter | 11:46
to the Ephesians, chapter one, verses 11 through 23. | 11:49
In Christ, we have also obtained an inheritance. | 11:54
Having been destined according to the purpose of Him, | 11:59
Who accomplishes all things according | 12:02
to His counsel and will, so that we, who were the first | 12:05
to set our hope on Christ might live for the praise | 12:10
of His glory. | 12:14 | |
In Him, you also, when you have heard the word of truth, | 12:16
the gospel of your salvation and have believed in Him, | 12:21
were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. | 12:26
This is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption | 12:30
as God's own people to the praise of His glory. | 12:36
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, | 12:41
and your love towards all the saints, | 12:45
and for this reason, I do not cease to give thanks for you, | 12:48
as I remember you in my prayers. | 12:53
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 12:57
the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom | 13:01
and revelation as you come to know Him, | 13:06
so that with the eyes of your heart enlightened, | 13:10
you may know what is the hope to which He has called you. | 13:15
What are the riches of His glorious inheritance | 13:20
among the saints? | 13:23
And what is the immeasurable greatness of His power for us | 13:25
who believe according to the working of His great power? | 13:29
God put this power to work in Christ when He raised Him | 13:35
from the dead and seated Him at the right hand | 13:39
of the heavenly places. | 13:43
Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion | 13:45
and above every name that is named, not only in this age, | 13:51
but also in the age to come. | 13:56
And He has put all things under his feet, | 14:00
and has made Him the head over all things for the church, | 14:03
which is His body, the fullness of Him, | 14:08
who fills all in all. | 14:12

- | The gospel lesson is located in Luke chapter six, | 14:20 |
verses 20 through 26. | 14:24
Then He looked upon His disciples and said to them, | 14:28
"Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is | 14:32
"the kingdom of God. | 14:36
"Blessed are you who are hungry now, | 14:38
"for you will be filled. | 14:41
"Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. | 14:44
"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they | 14:49
"exclude you, revile you, and defame you, | 14:52
"on account of the Son of man. | 14:56
"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, | 15:00
"for surely your reward is great in heaven, | 15:03
"for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. | 15:08
"But woe to you who are rich, | 15:13

- | Stuart Henry, a beloved professor emeritus | 15:56 |
from the divinity school, once told this story | 16:00
of a conversation that he had with a father who visited | 16:03
Duke Chapel with his son. | 16:06
It was a brilliant, sunny day, something like this one, | 16:09
and as they walked around the chapel, the father pointed out | 16:14
the figures in the stained glass windows. | 16:17
Later he asked his son, "Do you know who the saints are?" | 16:21
And the little boy answered, "The saints are the people | 16:26
"the sun shines through." | 16:29
The saints are the people the Son shines through. | 16:33
On this All Saints Sunday, we commemorate those people | 16:39
whom the Son shines through. | 16:44
People whose lives and deaths are so faithful that they | 16:48
are transparent as a beautiful pane of colored glass, | 16:52
allowing the light of Christ to shine through them | 16:57
into the world. | 17:01 | |
This is what Jesus meant when He said, | 17:03
"Abide in me and I will abide in you." | 17:05
It is when the individual is so close to Christ | 17:09
that when you look at them, it's no longer simply | 17:14
that person that you see, but also the very presence | 17:16
of the Son of God shining through them. | 17:20
It is when their life is so aligned with Christ, | 17:23
that God's will | 17:28 | |
and their acting are of one accord. | 17:30
It is a blessing to have the witness of the saints | 17:36
to offer us a clear model of what it means to live | 17:39
in and through Christ. | 17:42
In the chapel, we are surrounded by these saints, | 17:45
these windows through which their light shines through. | 17:50
These carvings remind us of the faithful | 17:55
who've gone before us. | 17:59
Look around you at the saints. | 18:01
In the top windows in the nave, we see the lives | 18:04
of the Old Testament faithful: Noah, Abraham, and Sarah, | 18:08
Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob, Moses, David, and Job. | 18:12
The bottom windows around the nave depict the men and women | 18:18
from the New Testament: Elizabeth and Zacharias, | 18:21
John the Baptist, Mary and Joseph, Jesus, the apostles, | 18:25
Mary and Martha, Mary Magdalene, Paul. | 18:30
Like heroes in the secular culture, these saints and the | 18:35
countless faithful across the centuries offer the church | 18:39
a vision, a model, of what is possible when we live | 18:43
in and through God. | 18:47
Through the stories that we tell about them, their faith | 18:50
is passed on, it shines through, across the chasm | 18:54
of time and space. | 18:58
It is tempting for us to look upon these men and women | 19:02
of faith from the past as exceptional. | 19:05
We find it easy to accept their sainthood, | 19:09
and we can even point to a few special people in more | 19:12
recent times whom we would name among the saints: | 19:15
Oscar Romero, Detrich Bonhoeffer, the Maryknoll Sisters. | 19:19
There is no doubt that the Son shined through these saints. | 19:26
They manifested Christ through their lives and deaths. | 19:31
They have been an inspiration for us and for many. | 19:35
But we tend to look at them as the exception | 19:40
rather than the rule. | 19:43
We would like to hold ourselves to a different standard, | 19:45
but to do so is to fundamentally misunderstand the meaning | 19:50
of the All Saints celebration and the Christian faith. | 19:53
In our baptismal covenant, and in the Apostle's Creed, | 19:58
we say that we believe in the communion of saints. | 20:02
In the Ephesians text today, the writer commends the church | 20:07
for their love extended toward all the saints. | 20:10
When the word saint is used in the New Testament, | 20:15
it doesn't refer only to the exceptionally courageous | 20:18
or faithful, but to all believers. | 20:21
Anyone who has been baptized into the death | 20:25
and resurrection of Jesus Christ is included | 20:29
among the saints. | 20:32
To be a saint simply means that you die to self in order | 20:35
to live to Christ. | 20:40
As Christians, we believe that through the working | 20:42
of the Holy Spirit, our very being is united with Christ, | 20:45
and through that same spirit working in the world, | 20:51
we are united with each other. | 20:53
It means that individually and collectively as the church, | 20:57
we live out of the deepest understanding | 21:02
that we belong to God. | 21:05
This relationship of communion with God through Christ | 21:09
isn't attainable only by the few, but is at the very core, | 21:14
at the heart, of what it means to be a Christian. | 21:19
It is what sets us apart and marks us as members | 21:22
of the body of Christ. | 21:25
It is what makes us the church. | 21:27
The communion that we share in Christ, unites us with God | 21:30
and with each other. | 21:35
And it transcends the boundaries of time and space, | 21:36
of life and death. | 21:41
When we worship together in faith, we are united | 21:44
with one another, with God, and with believers | 21:47
in every time and place. | 21:51
Our spirits are united with the Spirit of God, | 21:53
which is working in us and in all believers across the world | 21:57
to bring about God's purposes. | 22:01
This unity across time and space was brought home to me | 22:04
in a very real way on a mission trip to Honduras. | 22:09
Working with the community in San Marcos de la Sula, | 22:13
a remote mountain village. | 22:17
Many of us were initially conscious only of the distance | 22:19
of the chasm that separated our lives: | 22:23
language, culture, poverty, education. | 22:27
What did we have in common with people who lived in shacks | 22:31
with no water or electricity, who walked for miles | 22:34
every day carrying water on their heads. | 22:38
How could the chasm between our world and theirs be bridged? | 22:41
But in worship, as we read the same scriptures that | 22:48
were read in Duke Chapel, as we prayed and confessed | 22:51
our sins, as we gave thanks for the gift of God's love | 22:55
and forgiveness in Jesus Christ, and as we exchanged | 22:59
the signs of peace with one another. | 23:03
The differences dropped away, and we became one people, | 23:06
part of the one body of Christ, | 23:12
belonging to the one God and Lord of us all. | 23:15
Our offering of medical care and their offering | 23:20
of hospitality to the stranger, were motivated | 23:24
by the same call to manifest the love of God in our lives. | 23:28
As we offered our hands and hearts to one another, | 23:34
you could see the Son shining through. | 23:38
And for just a moment, we were the communion of saints. | 23:42
Communion with God and with each other through Christ | 23:47
is what we are called to manifest in our lives every day. | 23:52
It doesn't mean that we become perfect all of a sudden, | 23:57
or that we no longer sin, but it means that our lives | 24:00
get shaped and rearranged by the fundamental understanding | 24:04
that we belong to God and to each other as the church. | 24:09
It is what defines our identity | 24:15
and determines our priorities. | 24:17
It is no longer just the life that we want to live, | 24:19
but the life that Christ wants to live in us, | 24:24
individually and collectively as the church. | 24:28
It doesn't mean that we're all expected to quit our jobs | 24:32
and join religious orders, although some of us are | 24:35
called to that. | 24:38 | |
But it does mean asking, how can we let the light of Christ | 24:39
shine through us as physicians, professors, students, | 24:43
accountants, housekeepers. | 24:47
It does mean asking whether anyone will ever see God | 24:50
more clearly because they've known us. | 24:55
It does mean asking what it means to be the church | 24:59
in this place, but also part of the communion of saints | 25:03
which stretches out across time and space. | 25:06
In a few minutes, we will celebrate the Holy Eucharist. | 25:11
Through this ancient mystery, we are united with the saints, | 25:16
past, present, and future, as those who have received | 25:22
salvation and the blessings and the promises of God, | 25:27
through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. | 25:33
We are those who belong to God and who have been called | 25:37
according to God's purposes to manifest Christ in the world. | 25:42
