We had car trouble. | 27:36
While we were waiting for our car to be fixed, | 27:37
we wandered in the little churchyard of the village. | 27:41
I found myself in the cemetery, | 27:47
and over in the corner of the cemetery | 27:49
there was a plot with 50 identical graves. | 27:51
The tombstone said they were all young men | 27:58
between the ages of 18 and 25. | 28:00
They were all from New Zealand. | 28:05
I wondered, who were these, and why did | 28:10

There was no hint there in the cemetery, | 28:19

now grown up with grass around there, | 28:26
there was a sign which said, | 28:29
"We will never forget your sacrifice." | 28:32
I inquired at the town museum. | 28:40
The local historian said she didn't know. | 28:43
She could probably find out in a few days. | 28:45
I asked other people in town, who were these graves? | 28:49
Nobody knew. | 28:53 | |
Somebody said, well, perhaps they were | 28:54
soldiers from New Zealand, World War I. | 28:56
The flu epidemic 1918, maybe that's it. | 28:59
Nobody remembered. | 29:04
The sign in the cemetery was a lie. | 29:09
We had forgotten. | 29:14
This, this I think is what the | 29:19
philosopher Ernest Becker called the vital lie. | 29:22
The vital lie. | 29:27 | |
That somehow through some effort of ours | 29:30
there is immortality to be had in this world. | 29:33
Oh, we do it in different ways. | 29:37
Some say it with granite monuments in cemeteries. | 29:40
Others attempt to say it by putting on a uniform, | 29:44
marching behind the flag, merging our | 29:47
fragile existence into that of the group. | 29:49
Others do it by endowing chairs at universities. | 29:54
See, you will die, but your name | 29:57
shall live on into eternity. | 30:00
And Elie Wiesel stands and says | 30:06
to the millions of victims of Nazi Holocaust, | 30:09
"We will remember. | 30:12
"We will not forget." | 30:15
But over time, we do. | 30:21
Eventually we can forget even so | 30:24
great a horror as Auschwitz. | 30:27
Things slip through our fingers. | 30:32
Everything dissolves. | 30:35
We wish this were not so. | 30:41
In his last speech, Socrates gathers his disciples, | 30:45
and he says to them, "Always ponder | 30:49
"the eternal, immutable truth." | 30:52
The intelligent person keeps eyes | 30:59
fixed on that which is eternal. | 31:02
But Socrates was wrong. | 31:09
Socrates died, despite the best efforts | 31:11
of the Duke Department of Philosophy. | 31:14
We forget about Socrates. | 31:16
He is fodder for finitude and decay and mutability. | 31:19
You know this. | 31:27 | |
Those of you going through grief, | 31:30
will you not admit that | 31:33
one of the most frustrating parts about grieving | 31:37
is that you swear to the person whom you love | 31:40
who has died, I will not forget. | 31:43
I will go on grieving every day of my life. | 31:46
I will remember that voice and that laugh and that face. | 31:49
But scarcely few days after the funeral, | 31:56
you can feel this person slipping from your grasp, | 31:59
slipping through your fingers. | 32:02
You do forget. | 32:04 | |
You know that that person is no longer | 32:07
available to you in the way that once was. | 32:09
And to say that they are is a lie, | 32:16
though a lie with enough vitality | 32:21
to keep many going for a while. | 32:25
So, maybe the best that you can do | 32:30
in the face of omnivorous death | 32:32
is to be honest. | 32:36 | |
Let's have a little stoic honesty. | 32:39
And there's something to be said for that. | 32:42
The great orator Pericles stands before the, | 32:45
those families mourning the victims of the Athenian War. | 32:50
And Pericles, in one of the greatest | 32:54
funeral speeches ever given, | 32:56
he does not attempt to assuage grief with false consolation. | 33:00
He says, "You pray to God you will | 33:06
"never die in battle as these have." | 33:09
He says to parents who've lost a child. | 33:14
Some of you are young. | 33:17
Maybe you will have other children. | 33:19
Maybe they will give you some | 33:21
modicum in comfort in your grief. | 33:23
But at least Pericles does not lie. | 33:29
He is honest to admit that that's about as far | 33:37
as this consolation can go, and I admire him for that. | 33:41
Death | 33:46 | |
is death. | 33:48 | |
And that's at least partly the bible's view. | 33:53
Your friend, who is not a Christian | 33:58
and who says to you when hearing the Christian | 34:02
belief in resurrection, your friend who says, | 34:05
"Well, look, the way I see it, | 34:08
"when you're dead, you're dead." | 34:10
In a way that person is partly right. | 34:13
The ravages of death cannot be assuaged | 34:20
through cheap consolation, a vital lie, | 34:22
no matter how well meaning or finely crafted that lie. | 34:26
It's in our story. | 34:33
Jesus was dead. | 34:34 | |
The one in whom there had been such life was now dead. | 34:38
In the grip of death, and as if to drive home that point, | 34:44
Matthew says, he was entombed, and there was | 34:48
this huge rock in front of the door to the tomb. | 34:50
Huge rock. | 34:53 | |
And there was a squad of soldiers, | 34:55
and he had been in the tomb for three days, dead. | 34:57
And despite all of our lives and wishful thinking, | 35:05
when you're dead, | 35:08
you're dead. | 35:11 | |
And that's the end | 35:14
of our story. | 35:18 | |
"Never let it be said that brave blood | 35:22
"has been shed in vain," says Sir Walter Scott. | 35:25
It sends an imperious challenge down through the ages. | 35:29
Poor old romantic fool. | 35:32
You know | 35:35 | |
innocent, heroic blood is shed all the time in futility. | 35:38
Even the greatest heroics, on the battlefield, | 35:46
in the hospital operating room, on the football field, | 35:49
none of this brings immortality. | 35:53
Each year at Duke commencement, | 35:59
we stand and sing the Duke hymn. | 36:00
We sing, "Time, like an ever rolling stream | 36:03
"bares all who breathe away. | 36:08
"They fly forgotten as a dream | 36:11

It's quoting the somber words of Psalm 90. | 36:16
"The flower fades. | 36:20
"The grass withers." | 36:22
We are dust. | 36:23 | |
Honesty. | 36:29 | |
Stoic honesty. | 36:32 | |
When Dante is led by Virgil down into the afterworld, | 36:36
when Dante sees | 36:43 | |
that somber processional of silent dead, | 36:44
the millions who have died, Dante says to himself, | 36:48
"I had not known that death had undone so many." | 36:53
T.S. Eliot remembers that line | 37:02
when one late afternoon in London | 37:05
he sees people going home across London Bridge | 37:07
down King William Street, | 37:10
going, Eliot thought, not from work to home | 37:14
but shuffling in processional | 37:20
from life to death. | 37:25
"I will show you fear," Eliot said, | 37:30
"and a handful of dust." | 37:36
And that's honest. | 37:41
Not much to live for or die for, but at least it is honest. | 37:44
If there is to be hope for us, | 37:52

of wishful thinking, human potential. | 38:11

Some stunning intrusion, some act of God | 38:26
reversing our shuffle toward the grave, | 38:30
overcoming the final enemy. | 38:33
Something which in power defeats death, gives life. | 38:36
Some dawn not of our devising. | 38:42
Something which shakes our death-dealing, | 38:47
death-denying world to its foundation. | 38:50
Some descent to us. | 38:54
Some divine rolling back of the | 38:56
great stone under which we labor. | 38:59
Some light shining in the dark of death. | 39:03
Oh, that would be hope. | 39:06
Paul says, "We grieve, | 39:11
"but we do not grieve as those who have no hope." | 39:16
Wherein is our hope? | 39:22
As the first day of the week was dawning, | 39:29
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb, | 39:32
and suddenly there was a great earthquake. | 39:37
An angel of the Lord descending from heaven | 39:40
came and rolled back the stone. | 39:42
His appearance was like lightning. | 39:45
