we may hear your word with joy this day, amen. | 9:35
This reading is taken from the second chapter | 9:42
of the book of Acts, starting with the first verse. | 9:45
When the day of Pentecost had come, | 9:49
they were all together in one place, | 9:51
and suddenly from heaven, there came a sound | 9:54
like the rush of a violent wind, | 9:56
and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. | 9:59
Divided tongues as a fire appeared among them, | 10:02
and a tongue rested on each of them. | 10:06
All of them were filled with the holy spirit | 10:09
and began to speak in other languages | 10:11
as the spirit gave them ability. | 10:14
Now, there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven | 10:17
living in Jerusalem. | 10:21
At this sound, the crowd gathered and was bewildered | 10:23
because each one heard them speaking | 10:26
in the native language of each. | 10:28
Amazed and astonished, they asked, | 10:31
"Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? | 10:33
"And how is it that we hear each of us | 10:37
"in our own native language?" | 10:40
Carthians, Meedes, Illomites, and residents of Mesopotamia, | 10:42
Judea, and Cappadocia, (mumbles) and Asia, (mumbles) | 10:47
Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Syrani, | 10:53
and visitors from Rome, both Jews and (mumbles) | 10:57
credence and Arabs in our languages, we hear them speaking | 11:01
about God's deeds and power. | 11:06
All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, | 11:09
"What does this mean?" | 11:13
But others sneered and said, | 11:15
"They are filled with new wine." | 11:18
But Peter standing with the 11 raised his voice | 11:20
and addressed them. | 11:23
"Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, | 11:25
"let this be known to you and listen to what I say. | 11:28
"Indeed these are not drunk as you suppose | 11:32

No one can say Jesus is Lord except by the holy spirit. | 15:40

and there are varieties of services by the same Lord, | 15:50

all of them in everyone. | 15:59
To each is given the manifestation of the spirit | 16:02

Jesus came and stood among them and said, | 21:09

- | They were all gathered together waiting, expectant, | 22:06 |
hopeful that the promise would be fulfilled. | 22:12
There were about 120 of them, | 22:16
and they were all in one place. | 22:19
The living conditions were a bit cramped, | 22:22
but the Lord had ordered them to wait in Jerusalem | 22:25
for the promise of the father to be fulfilled. | 22:28
So, they waited, | 22:32 | |
not knowing exactly what to expect, | 22:34
but trusting the Lord to fulfill his promise. | 22:38
They had already witnessed and seen so many surprising | 22:41
and wondrous things. | 22:45
From the very beginning, it was clear | 22:48
that he was like no one they had ever met. | 22:50
He made them feel special, loved. | 22:54
They had left everything and followed him. | 22:59
They had witnessed his incredible power. | 23:04
They had seen him make the blind to see | 23:07
and the lame to walk. | 23:11
And they had seen his knowledge of spiritual things. | 23:14
They observed him holding a crowd of people spellbound | 23:19
for hours, and they had seen him in discussions | 23:23
with the spiritual leaders of Judaism at that time, | 23:27
and they were perplexed by the scope of his wisdom | 23:31
and spiritual knowledge. | 23:35
When he had been crucified and buried, | 23:38
and when they thought they had lost all hope, | 23:41
he had astounded them all by rising again from the dead. | 23:44
They knew now that he was the Christ. | 23:51
In the last 40 days, he had appeared among them many times, | 23:56
speaking to them about the kingdom of God. | 24:01
They ask him when he would reveal his power to the world | 24:05
and restore the kingdom of Israel, | 24:10
but never acting as they expected. | 24:13
He told them to leave the time table of the kingdom | 24:16
to the father, who would send the power | 24:21
of the holy spirit upon them. | 24:24
Then, they saw him lifted up to heaven in a cloud, | 24:28
but they were left alone again to ponder all these things, | 24:34
wondering what it meant for the future. | 24:39
Not knowing what else to do, they waited in Jerusalem | 24:43
as Christ had told them. | 24:48
He said they were to be baptized and receive the power | 24:51
of the holy spirit, but they weren't sure what this meant | 24:55
because they had already been baptized by John. | 24:58
But they waited, praying unceasingly, expectantly, | 25:04
trusting that the Lord's promise would be fulfilled | 25:10
as so many of his other promises had been fulfilled. | 25:14
Suddenly, a wind began to stir in the room. | 25:19
Gently at first, then, it grew stronger, | 25:24
and they looked up from their prayers, alarmed, | 25:27
not sure if they were in danger from a sudden storm. | 25:30
And the wind was beginning to rumble | 25:34
like the sound of thunder. | 25:37
And before they could move, | 25:40
it filled the entire house about them. | 25:41
People who've lived through violent wind, whether hurricane | 25:47
or tornado, had talked about the phenomenon | 25:50
that time seems to stand still, | 25:54
and you were paralyzed in the grip of the wind, | 25:58
unable to move, | 26:01 | |
only to wait to see what would happen. | 26:04
They were held there in the spell of the wind, | 26:08
and then, they saw tongues as a fire appear | 26:13
and begin to touch each one of them. | 26:16
And before they knew what was happening, they were filled | 26:21
with the holy spirit. | 26:26
They were astounded to feel the presence | 26:30
and the power of God infusing their very being, | 26:35
and they were filled with uncontainable joy, | 26:40
and their praises burst forth in a multitude of languages. | 26:44
Now, at this time in Jerusalem, there were Jews | 26:52
from Diaspora all over the world | 26:54
who had settled there looking for a homeland. | 26:57
There were also pilgrims in the city | 27:01
for the feast of weeks, which was the remembrance | 27:03
of the giving of the law of Mount Sinai. | 27:06
Some of these Jews heard the strange sounds | 27:09
coming from the house in the Jewish section of the city. | 27:12
First, a roaring wind, then, voices shouting. | 27:16
They ran to see what calamity had befallen them. | 27:21
Others saw the crowd gathering and followed to see | 27:25
what was happening. | 27:29
They were amazed to find over 100 Galileans | 27:31
shouting ecstatically in a multitude of languages. | 27:36
They were even more surprised to discover | 27:40
that they could understand what they were saying. | 27:43
Each one of them, Partheons, Meedes, Illomites, | 27:46
Mesopotamians, Jews from all over the world | 27:50
heard the disciples in their own language praising God | 27:55
for his amazing deeds of power. | 27:59
All of them were astonished and perplexed, | 28:03
saying to one another, "What does this mean?" | 28:06
Some of them said with a sneer, | 28:10
"They're filled with new wine! | 28:13
"They're drunk!" | 28:15
Now, Peter, the one who had denied Jesus three times | 28:18
during the time of his trial and arrest, heard this. | 28:23
He was standing with the 11 apostles, | 28:28
and he raised his voice and addressed the crowd saying, | 28:30
"These are not drunk. | 28:34
"It's only nine o'clock in the morning. | 28:37
"No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel. | 28:40

"And your young men shall see visions. | 28:58
"And your old men will dream dreams." | 29:02
This is the story of Pentecost. | 29:09
It goes on to tell the conversion of that crowd | 29:12
of 3,000 people. | 29:16 | |
Pentecost, the coming of the power of the holy spirit, | 29:18
the birth of the Christian church, Pentecost. | 29:25
After Easter, this is the most important story | 29:32
in the Christian faith. | 29:35
In fact, this is the continuation of the promise of Easter. | 29:37
At Pentecost, the power of God may manifest | 29:43
in the resurrection and the ascension of Christ | 29:48
was bestowed up on the people of God as a gift. | 29:51
Jesus promised his disciples that he would send them | 29:57
a helper who would endow them with power to carry out | 30:00
his ministry in the world. | 30:05
At Pentecost, the promise was fulfilled in the coming | 30:08
of the holy spirit, | 30:12
but what does this mean for us? | 30:15
We're all gathered here this morning, | 30:18
waiting expectantly, hoping for something. | 30:21
We sing, we pray, | 30:26 | |
we confess, we praise, | 30:30
we speak, we listen. | 30:33
What are we waiting for? | 30:38
What are we expecting to hear, to receive? | 30:41
Perhaps a word of God? | 30:46
Perhaps a breath of wind? | 30:51
A touch of fire? | 30:55 | |
A sign of God's power? | 30:58
What does Pentecost mean for us, for you, and for me | 31:03
in the twentieth century in the world that we live in? | 31:07
What difference does it make to our worship | 31:11
and how we live our lives as Christians? | 31:14
Some of us don't think it means very much really. | 31:18
We tend to agree with those who thought | 31:22
that the disciples must've been filled with new wine. | 31:24
Certainly, they were enthusiastic, | 31:28
but we don't really believe in that stuff | 31:30
about the rush of wind and speaking in other languages. | 31:32
Pentecost may have been the birth of the church, | 31:36
but it was no miracle. | 31:40
Others of us believe that Pentecost might have happened | 31:43
as the story said but aren't sure | 31:47
that it makes much difference. | 31:49
After all, Pentecost was a very long time ago. | 31:51
While others of us may actually have experienced | 31:56
a touch of the Pentecost spirit once or twice, | 31:59
but we were frightened by it or | 32:04
it didn't make much of a difference in our lives | 32:07
so we don't put much stock | 32:09
in that kind of spiritual thing anymore. | 32:10
Some of us have never known the spirit's power | 32:14
that we've hungered for this experience | 32:17
of intimacy with God, | 32:20
for this kind of power in our spiritual walk with Christ. | 32:22
Is Pentecost possible? | 32:27
Is it real? | 32:30 | |
Is it necessary for you and for me? | 32:32
It is true that most of us don't experience the drama | 32:36
of that first inbreaking of the holy spirit. | 32:40
We haven't heard the roar of thunder. | 32:43
We haven't felt the tongues of flame, | 32:45
but the gift of God's power through the spirit | 32:49
is just as essential to us as it was to the first disciples. | 32:53
Perhaps more so because we don't have the benefit of being | 32:59
first-hand witnesses to the life, and the death, | 33:02
and the resurrection, and the ascension of Christ. | 33:05
If all that they had experienced and witnessed in Christ | 33:09
could not empower them to be faithful disciples, | 33:13
apart from the coming of the spirit, | 33:17
then how can you and I, who have only the record | 33:20
of these events expect to live the faithful life? | 33:23
Christ promised his disciples the gift of the holy spirit | 33:28
because he knew that apart from the power of God, | 33:33
they could not live the faithful, Christian life. | 33:37
The holy spirit is the manifestation of God's power at work | 33:42
in human beings, confirming the gift of God's grace | 33:46
in Jesus Christ | 33:50 | |
and remaking us in the image of Christ. | 33:52
That's what it means to be Christian, | 33:56
to be recreated through the power of God's spirit | 33:59
infused in our spirit to be remade | 34:02
in the image of Christ. | 34:07
Now, sociologists and psychologists tell us | 34:10
that environment, conditioning, and training | 34:14
shape our personalities irrevocably. | 34:18
Our talents, our intellectual abilities, | 34:23
our emotional development are believed to define the limits | 34:25
of our performance as human beings. | 34:30
Not so says Pentecost. | 34:34
Through the power of the Holy Spirit, | 34:40
personalities are transformed and individuals are empowered | 34:42
to think and act | 34:46 | |
beyond their natural inclinations and capacities. | 34:48
The holy spirit doesn't accept the limits | 34:53
of our environment, conditioning, or training. | 34:55
The spirit of God judges and convicts our past, | 34:59
burning away the chaff and all that separates us from God | 35:03
that we might be refined and freed for the potential | 35:08
that only God has seen. | 35:12
Through the holy spirit, it is burned into our hearts | 35:15
that we are God's own beloved children | 35:19
and that God wants more for us | 35:23
than we have ever envisioned for ourselves. | 35:25
Through the spirit, our natural tendencies are overcome, | 35:29
and our potential is multiplied. | 35:33
The spirit blows out the cobwebs of fear and uncertainty | 35:37
and gives us the conviction that through the power of God, | 35:43
all things are possible. | 35:47
When the holy spirit descended upon the gathered community | 35:52
at Pentecost, an amazing transformation happened. | 35:55
This small group of believers who had been huddled together | 35:59
in prayer, afraid to share what they had experienced, | 36:03
uncertain about what the future would hold, | 36:08
were suddenly transformed | 36:11
into a joyous community praising God. | 36:13
They were filled with God's love and power, | 36:17
and they immediately began to share the gift | 36:20
of the good news with other people. | 36:23
Peter, who had been fearful to admit that he was a disciple | 36:26
of Christ, even to a serving woman in the courtyard | 36:30
at Jesus' trial, now, stood boldly and addressed a crowd | 36:33
of more than 3,000 Jews, | 36:38
proclaiming all that God had done for Jesus Christ, | 36:40
proclaiming that Jesus Christ was Lord. | 36:44
This small group of disciples would go to the far corners | 36:50
of the world, risking persecution and death | 36:53
to share the good news of Jesus Christ. | 36:58
Their natural tendencies of fear, caution, | 37:01
even self-preservation were overcome | 37:06
as the spirit multiplied their potential | 37:09
and created through them a church that extended the body | 37:13
of Christ to the whole world. | 37:16
Pentecost, the coming of the spirit, | 37:21
was given to empower believers | 37:26
to live the Christian life. | 37:30
The spirit enlivens Christ within us | 37:33
so that we are able to abide with him, and he in us. | 37:36
When we're filled by the spirit, | 37:41
we begin to look more like Christ | 37:43
and less like the sinful, habitual people | 37:45
who can't overcome the boundaries of environment, | 37:48
and training, and conditioning. | 37:51
When we're filled with the spirit, | 37:55
we experience God's power to free us from all the places | 37:58
in our lives where we're stuck. | 38:03
From the crippling memory of abuse, | 38:06
from the gripping fear that you are not | 38:10
and never will be good enough, | 38:12
from the knot of anger towards someone | 38:15
that you used to love, | 38:18
from your dependence upon alcohol or food or drugs, | 38:20
from guilt over some sin that you committed years ago, | 38:25
from grief over the loss of a loved one, | 38:31
or anxiety about an illness, whatever it is | 38:34
that limits you and makes you feel cut off from God's love, | 38:39
that's what the spirit desires to loosen in you. | 38:44
The holy spirit makes it possible for each one of us, | 38:50
no matter how messed up we might be, | 38:53
to experience the assurance of God's unqualified love. | 38:56
That's what frees us to love others unreservedly. | 39:01
The undeniable test that we've been baptized by the fire | 39:07
of the holy spirit is that we are freed from all the places | 39:11
in our lives where we've been stuck, | 39:15
freed to love with a deeper capacity and a deeper joy. | 39:17
And as we are freed for love, so we are freed for service. | 39:24
For the purpose of the coming of the holy spirit | 39:31
at Pentecost was to prepare the believers | 39:33
for greater service in the world as disciples | 39:36
of Jesus Christ. | 39:39 | |
The spirit longs to transform us into more loving people | 39:41
so that we might become more giving people, | 39:46
even as Christ was giving. | 39:50
The gift of the holy spirit is not | 39:54
for our private edification, but to prepare us | 39:56
for greater service to others. | 40:00
Perhaps, this is one of the reasons that most of us | 40:04
resist the coming of the spirit. | 40:07
We're afraid of what it might cost us if we really let | 40:10
the spirit in, if we allow Christ to abide in us, | 40:14
and there's good reason for our fear | 40:18
when we look at the examples of the apostles or the saints. | 40:21
Even in our own century, it is clear that most of them | 40:24
have suffered for their faith. | 40:28
Mother Teresa, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, | 40:31
Oscar Romera, | 40:35 | |
these have taught us the cost of discipleship, | 40:38
and yet, their lives were marked by deep joy | 40:42
and deep loving, by authenticity and meaning | 40:46
that makes us wonder if maybe they have found something | 40:52
that we've missed, that we have yet to experience in life. | 40:55
No Christian is able to meet the cost | 41:01
of faithful discipleship | 41:04
without the empowering spirit of God. | 41:06
That those who have known the spirit of God experience it | 41:10
not as a burden, but a joy to be shared | 41:13
and a gift worthy of the very best we have to offer. | 41:18
The response of those who receive the gift of the spirit | 41:24
is exuberant joy and praise. | 41:27
Pentecost, the coming of the holy spirit, | 41:32
the power of God. | 41:37 | |
