Illustration accompanying an article on the centennial of the YWCA. Depicts a group of men watching women working on a typewriter. Includes caption: "In 1880 the first class for women in the use of the typewriter was established in the New York YWCA in spite of publicly expressed fears for the 'female constitution.' The Y called in doctors to confirm their opinion that the ladies could take it, and eight pupils were graduated from the first class without a single casualty, thus starting a demand for 'female typewriters.'"
